One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem-inability read.
In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle (小猎犬). I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal friend I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle.
There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked identical (相同的) to my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story, about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion, on and on until my lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together.
My mother’s call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them.
I never told my mother about my “miraculous” (奇迹般的) experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a Ph.D. in literature and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held.

These include eyestrain, headaches, as well as difficulty in even finishing reading the text. Now a new reading plugin (插件) has been intended to help people overcome these problems and read faster online.
The reading plugin called Bionic Reading, which was developed by Swiss designer Renato Casutt, was created with the belief that your brain can read faster than your eyes. The plugin makes the first few letters of each word in bold (粗体), which actually allows your eyes to skip over parts of the text and your brain to fill in what is missing. Incredibly, reading like this feels like finally unlocking 100 percent of people’s brain.
Casutt came up with the plugin by accident. He was reading a book in a foreign language and realized he could read it faster and well master it if he separated it into parts. He has worked for six years to develop Bionic Reading and is still working to perfect it. Many people who want to strengthen their reading ability show interest in it, but more research is needed before it can be definitively shown that the system improves reading ability. But people with dyslexia (诵读障碍) have confirmed that Bionic Reading did help them focus on what they are reading.
Casutt’s goal is to integrate the plugin into all reading apps and online services. “In a digital world dominated (支配) by shallow forms of reading, Bionic Reading aims to encourage a more in-depth reading and understanding of written content,” he said. Bionic Reading is available in several apps like Fiery Feeds, Lire, and Next App. The best way to know if it helps you read better online is to try it yourself and find out what it is all about.

My husband Tom came with a huge grin on his face. He held his arms wide and announced his retirement after working for the Postal Service for thirty-three years. But as time went by, I could tell that Tom had nothing to do at home. He began to pace like a lion, glancing out the windows.
“I think I’ll look for a part-time job,” Tom informed me one day. I felt instant relief. The lion would cease circling, and I could be in peace. We kept our eyes open for job opportunities. A few days later, when our car crept behind a school bus, I remarked “You could drive that bus.” He had driven us over the mountain s through rainstorms on winding roads. Behind the wheel, he seemed fearless. “Of course, I could drive that bus,” he answered back. “But could I drive it with forty-five children bouncing and yelling in the back?” We both laughed at the thought.
That bus became the bumblebee (大黄蜂) that buzzed around me. I pictured Tom happily going off to work again, climbing behind the wheel and setting off on his daily route. My enthusiasm must have attracted Tom because I overheard him on the phone with the transportation department. He was hired.
The very next morning, he was given a bus and a route sheet. Driving the bus turned out rewarding, and Tom is blooming in his new role. I think he likes being the “big guy” on the road.
He is now “Mr. Tom” to his riders and their parents. I hear he is quite amazing. When the pre-K children climb aboard, he fastens the safety belt for them. He greets the children with high-fives. Then he leads them in a quick and fun activity, where they get to shout after hours spent in their quiet classroom. “Goodbye, teachers!” yells Mr. Tom. The little ones repeat it. “Goodbye, school!” Again, they repeat, joyfully. Mr. Tom then yells out the last two lines, and the children laugh and repeat at the top of their lungs.
He has been driving the bus for seven years and has gotten lots of thank-notes from grateful parents. Sometimes, while a school bus passes me, it always warms my heart when the driver is the one I’m hoping to see and I catch the kiss he blows me.

We stopped in our tracks to take in the beauty of the lake surrounded by the Southern Alps in the South Island.
While we were driving along the amazing beaches in the North Otago Coast, we stopped to see one of the nation's most fantastic attractions. In a small fishing village in Moeraki, there is a sandy beach full of strange spherical boulders(圆形巨石).“I have seen the most amazing rock structures in Stonehenge but never seen these extremely large boulders,” I said in amazement. One of the fellow travelers explained that according to the Maori legend(传说), once upon a time the Moeraki Boulders were gourds (葫芦). And they were actually used by ancient people for carrying food aboard on a famous canoe(独木舟)named “Araiteuru”. Then accidentally, the canoe crashed. They thought that the crash survivors were transformed into the area's surrounding hills, and the gourds were transformed into gray and spherical boulders.
I was interested in the spherical boulders and after a brief Googling during the trip, I came to know that millions of years ago, the rocks remained hidden inside the cliffs in the area and they gradually became visible. Then due to years of erosion they took the present forms and “The Food Basket of the World" made the place a popular tourist attraction. I tried to memorize the story as I realized how we are dependent on written records and how forgetful we are. The Maoris though considered as “illiterates” had such powerful memory that they used to pass on the stories to the next generation by means of oral literature.
