“We are becoming the people we wanted to be,” Gloria Steinem, a journalist and social activist, declared in the 1970s. So have women really become the people they wanted to be? Yes.     1     And they are nurses, clerks, doctors, scientists and so on. For a better understanding, here are some true data about women at work.

    2

One of the great changes in gender equality is taking place in education. More women graduate from high school, attend and graduate from college. In 1994, 63 percent of female high school graduates and 61 percent of male high school graduates were enrolled in college the following fall, according to the Pew Research Center. By 2012, that number for women jumped to 71 percent, but remained unchanged for males, at 61 percent.

The wage gap between males and females is still existing.

Even as more women are flooding onto college campuses, here’s a disappointing trend.     3     But there still is a gap between their earnings and men’s earnings. Women in professional specialty occupations earn 72.7 percent of what men in the same position earn.

Is there any place women earn the same as men?

No. Unfortunately, there is no such place. But it can be to a woman’s advantage to work in a labor union.     4     So, while there is a gap, it’s much less than in professions without unions, where women make 72 percent of men’s incomes.

Women bring home more income.

5     Over 40 percent of moms are now the sole or primary source of income in U.S. households. Women are now the primary or co-money-maker in nearly two-thirds of American families and working married women bring home 44 percent of their family income.

A.Education is specially significant for women.
B.Women are taking higher education by storm.
C.It is a fact that women climb higher in the work world now.
D.An increasing number of women have joined the workforce.
E.More than ever before, women are the breadwinners in the household.
F.Today, 30 percent of all the businesses are owned and operated by women.
G.Women who work in unionized professions make 82 percent of men’s incomes.

【推荐1】I got my first job at 12, as a waitress. I learned more as a waitress than I ever did in a classroom. When I went on to college, it paid for tuition, housing and, eventually, a camera. It allowed me to free myself. But best of all, being a waitress taught me to quickly assess and understand all kinds of people. Making small talks and quickly putting people at ease are great training for journalism.

From the moment I picked up a camera, I was hooked. All I wanted to do was take pictures for the university newspaper. The week I finished college, I was hired by the Globe, a regional daily newspaper. The two-year experience that followed was like a master class in photojournalism. Among the most important things learned there was that if you can make friends with a shy Norwegian farmer and be invited to his kitchen table, you can probably do well in any culture on Earth.

It was while I was working at the Globe that I happened to answer the phone one morning, a man's voice said, "This is Bob Gilka, National Geographic. I need a hail(冰雹)damage picture. You got a big hailstorm last night?" I overcame my nervousness and responded "Yes, sir." Thus began one of the most important relationships of my life, with the legendary Director of Photography Bob Gilka.

Bob was looking for talented photographers to join his team, and he was not easily impressed. Praise from Bob meant as much to most photographers as a Pulitzer Prize. My little picture of hail damage luckily won it, making me the youngest photographer in National Geographic.

I am deeply grateful for the amazing lessons photography has taught me. I have learned that language isn't always necessary, but touch usually is; that all people are not alike, but they do mostly have the same hopes and fears; that judging others does great harm, but listening to them enriches; and that it is impossible to hate a group of people once you get to know one of them as an individual.

【推荐3】Finding summer jobs for teenagers has not always been easy, but now you no longer have to worry about what your kid can do to make their own money. Recently I found some different sites online that offer information about what kids can do. Below is some of that information, along with questions to think about to help you come up with your own ideas.

Ideas for summer work:

●Parks and Recreation Programs (娱乐节目).

●Babysitting during the day of school.

●Working part-time at a day care for the summer.

●Car washing.

●Working at local vegetable stands .

The easiest way for you to find ways for your child to make money is to think about others’ inconveniences. Think of things you need done, or would like to have done, and what you would consider paying for these things to get done. Once you have some ideas, you can sit down with your child and talk to them about what they would be interested in doing. Then once you have an idea of what they want to do, you can help them come up with fair prices.
Perhaps you would want to only have your child working with people that you know and trust, or at least you could have your child pick a partner. That way with each of them carrying cell phones, even those without service can call 911, they will be much safer.
You can find out more information and many more ideas for kids to use to make money during their summer holidays by surf the Internet.
