If you’ve reached the end of the year feeling as though you didn’t read enough, we’ve got you. Here are some of the best books of the year according to notable artists, image-makers and other cultural taste makers.
Emily Ratajkowski, model: Ghost Lover’“This collection of nine short stories probes into many of the same themes in Lisa Taddeo’s beloved ‘Three Women’, but discusses them in a sharper, more disagreeable way. She ruthlessly explores jealousy relationships between women, aging, revenge and, of course, desire. Taddeo never lets you come up for air -- making you laugh while simultaneously horrifying you all when you least expect it.”
Hans UIrich Obrist, artistic director: ‘I Always Knew’“This is a portrait of artist and writer Barbara Chase-Riboud, through the letters she wrote to her mother, Vivian Mae, between 1957 and 1991. In this remarkable title, Barbara Chase-Riboud tells her mother about her development as an artist, her love stories, and her trips around the globe, from Africa to China. In these memoirs (回忆录), Chase-Riboud frankly and passionately describes her aspirations, her ambitions and creative inspiration, while also showcasing love and tenderness to her mother.”
Avan Jogia, actor and director: ‘Who is Wellness For?’“‘Who is Wellness For?’ is a book that works as part social observation and part memoir. It explores the commercialization of healing and ritual and asks questions about the industry of wellness I found the read insightful, thoughtful, and unafraid. Wellness isn’t for anyone if it’s not for everyone.”

Reading poems can be a lot of fun for kids. With these children’s poetry books on the homepage, children will gain a new appreciation of poetry and the spoken word.
Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices
The entertaining sounds of insects fill these poems by Paul Fleischman, making it a favorite with 12 — 15-year-olds. These poems were written to be read aloud by two readers.
Paul Fleischman received the 1989 Newbery Medal for Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices. Other recognition included: Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, the PEN Center USA Literary Award and so on.
Eric Beddows’ detailed pencil pictures, are vivid and effective complements to the poetry, which brings insects to life when it is read aloud by two voices.
You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You: Very Short Mother Goose Tales to Read Together
Poet Mary Ann Hoberman is the author of the picture book, which includes the joyful pictures of Michael Emberley. The book contains very short story poems for two people to read aloud, alternately and together. Each of the 12 stories for 6 — 11-year-olds features rhythm, rhyme, and repetition, as well as humor and attention on the joys of reading.
The book is one of a series of story poems. All the books are designed to be read aloud by two people, as if, says Hoberman, it’s “a little play for two voices”. The two people can be an adult and a child or two children.
Big Talk: Poems for Four Voices
Poems for four voices are much more challenging to present than poems for two voices, but middle school students tend to enjoy the challenge. The three-story poems in it will appeal to middle schoolers. The author, Paul Fleischman, provides a clear description of how to use the book. The poems are color-coded to make them easier for the four readers to keep track of their parts.
I Am Phoenix: Poems for Two Voices
The fifteen poems for two voices in the book are all about birds. Ken Nutt’s soft pencil pictures complement the poems by Paul Fleischman. The words of each poem are in two columns, each to be read by one person, sometimes individually, sometimes together.

Jenny: I study by reading the textbook every night. I make lists of words I don’t know. Then I make flashcards (抽示卡) from the lists and go over them. I like to study by myself at home. It’s quiet there.
John: I study best with my friends. We get together in the park after school. Sometimes we use flashcards. At other times, we practise talking in English. It helps me a lot.
Anna: I ask my teacher for help. She always gives me tapes to listen to. Sometimes I read aloud to help practise pronunciation. And I listen to radio programmes like this one too! You can say that I learn by listening.
So they have three different ways to study and they all work (起作用). Our next programme is about language learning.

The public seems interested in finding danger in this activity. Cape Town’s aquarium has been filled with divers who want to swim with the sharks since it opened its tanks to paying visitors last month. Around 70 tourists aged between 12 and 40 have paid 275 rand (US $55) each to spend up to an hour with Maxine, Dee and Floyd, the aquarium’s three sharks.
And conservationists say the project should help change the damage done to the shark’s image by the popular movie Jaws.
“People will always pay money to be a bit daring,” said Paul Loetter, an aquarium diver. “Most people think every shark is dangerous, but they’ve got the wrong idea.”
Each visitor can swim with the sharks and other fish that share their tank, guarded by aquarium divers armed only with a stick to keep off any over-friendly sharks.
“This is part of a communication and education programme to show sharks are not as bad as everyone makes out,” said Tony McGyre, operations manager at the aquarium.
Len Compagno, head of the South African shark research center, agreed. “It’s no joke to play around with a big dog. In the same way, a three-metre-long shark could put a few holes in you.” he said.

Standing atop the Red Hill in Lhasa, the current structure dates from the 17th century; it was rebuilt by the 5th Dalai Lama and became the Winter Palace for Dalai Lamas from that time. The 13-storey building of 1,000 rooms can be seen from many miles away.
The Potala is divided into two sections—an outer section, the White Palace, and an inner section, the Red Palace, the latter containing the temples and reliquary (遗骨) tombs of the Dalai Lamas. The entire building is a structure of stone and timber. At a height of 117 metres, the Potala was the world’s tallest building until 20th-century architects designed cityscapes of new buildings that far surpassed the Potala in height—but not in its architectural majesty (威严).
There are small palaces within grand palaces. The Potala stands so high that it looks like a magnificent castle in the heavens. The statues of King Songtsen Gampo and Princess Wencheng are the worship. Among the eight tomb pagodas (塔) of the Dalai Lamas, the tomb of the fifth Dalai Lama is the most extravagant (奢侈的), standing 14 metres high. Eleven thousand ounces of gold were used in the gold plating, and the designs and decorations are all inlaid with diamonds and pearls as well as turquoise (绿宝石), agate (玛瑙), and coral stones.
