Are You a Moring Person?
Mornings are not for everyone. Knowing that our own bodies may be wired to prefer a certain time of day is certainly a relief. But many of us still have to wake up and function during those first daylight hours. So what can you do?
We tapped a variety of experts - from sleep experts to nutritionists to life organizational pros (生活管理达人) — to share their tricks on how to make morning less stressful and more pleasant for even the most after-hours of night owls.
1. Night waking
Poor sleep quality can explain why we sometimes wake up from eight hours of snoozing and feel like we only clocked in at four. “It’s normal to have one or two awakenings, but more than that leaves us feeling groggy (昏昏沉沉) in the morning because of the fragmented sleep,” explains Shelby Harris, director of the behavioral sleep medicine program at Montefiore Medical Center.
2. The Science of snoozing
The snooze button does more harm than good. Nodding off again sends you into a light and fragmented sleep! Multiple snoozes can leave you feeling groggier than just getting out of bed the first time. Instead, be honest about the time you intend to get up and then enjoy every last minute of sleep, so you can wake up alert and ready to go.
3. Don’t ease into your workday
It can be tempting to plow through the easy things early on—checking e-mail, scanning the headlines—but it’s wise to tackle the bigger stuff first. “Getting to work on the most important tasks not only ups the chances that they actually get done, but it also leaves you with a burst of accomplishment to take with you the rest of the day,” says Jason Selk, coauthor of Organize Tomorrow Today.
4. Save social media for later
Schedule a social media block later in the afternoon to check in when you’re likely to need a break anyway, and save the morning for the important stuff.

Gabby Logan, TV presenter
Resolution: to drink more water
I know I should drink two litres of water a day, but it’s easy to forget, especially when it's cold out. I’m going to fill my bottle and leave it in the fridge overnight so I won’t leave home without it and check in each night to see if I’ve drunk enough.
Sarah Stirk, TV presenter
Resolution: to meditate (冥想) more
With a newborn baby, I'll need to stay really calm. Meditation will help me deal with those stresses, so I'll work on that, as well as deep breathing and getting out in nature regularly. With a positive attitude, I use diaries to help me keep my resolution.
Desirèe Henry, sprinter (短跑运动员)
Resolution: to get quality rest
As I train so hard, I need to ensure I also get enough rest. I’ve set an 8:30 pm reminder on my phone to slow down. Sometimes I can move really slowly, so I give myself plenty of time. At 10 pm, I’ll put my phone on airplane mode so I can't be disturbed.
Alex Davies, bodybuilder
Resolution: to schedule my time efficiently
I’ve taken a break from my job as an engineer to become a professional bodybuilder and train as a drone (无人机) pilot. I’ve never been busier! But without that 9-to-5 structure, I need to be focused. My top trick will be nightly diaries so I can write down my short-term goals and prepare a to-do list for the next day.

There are always people who take great pleasure in finding faults with others. However, life can become wonderful when you are not constantly busy pointing out its flaws.
A few years ago, I received a letter from Kerry, a seventeen-year-old, who described herself as an expert fault-finder. She was almost always bothered by things and found that people constantly annoyed her. Nothing was ever good enough. She was extremely critical of herself and also found faults in her friends, which made her quite a boring person to be around.
Unfortunately, it took a terrible accident to change her attitude. Her best friend had a serious car crash and was badly injured. What made it almost unbearable was the fact that the day before the accident, Kerry had visited her friend and spent the entire time criticizing her choice of boyfriends, her lifestyle, her relationship with her mother, and various other things she felt the need to point out. It wasn’t until her friend was badly hurt that Kerry realized that she needed to appreciate life rather than harshly(严厉地) criticize everything. She was able to extend her newfound wisdom to other aspects of her life as well.
Perhaps most of us aren’t as extreme in fault-finding, but if we are honest, we can be sharply critical of the world. I’m not suggesting that you ignore problems or pretend things are better than they are, but rather that you learn to accept things as they are — most of the time, especially when they’re not of significant importance.
Train yourself to “bite your tongue” and with a little practice, you’ll become really good at letting things go. When you do, you’ll regain your enthusiasm and love for life.
So learning to accept and appreciate life’s imperfections can bring about positive changes in our attitude and well-being. By redirecting our focus to the good things in life, we can create a more fulfilling and joyful existence.

During an earthquake, the shakings make rocks rise suddenly and even crack (断裂) open. Houses fall, people are killed or hurt, and sometimes the whole villages or cities are destroyed.
Can we do something to keep ourselves safe from earthquakes? Scientists have studied earthquakes and make maps that show the “earthquake belts”. In areas (地区) in these belts, it’s possible for earthquakes to happen. In these areas we should build strong houses to fight against earthquakes.
In the future, scientists will be able to tell when and where an earthquake will be before they happen. They can also tell people what to do and how to do it. Then we will no longer be afraid of earthquakes.

Being of a certain age will surely enhance the pleasure in watching “The Greatest Night in Pop”, a documentary on the making of “We Are the World” nearly 40 years ago. Lionel Richie serves as the tour guide for this trip down memory lane, which fulfills its promise to make a better day for you and me.
For those who don’t remember, the song and video to benefit starving people in Africa was pulled together in 1985, cleverly gathering nearly four dozen influential musical stars after they appeared at the American Music Awards. As Richie notes, organizers knew they had “one night only to get this right,” with producer Quincy Jones famously posting a sign outside that read, “Check your ego (自负) at the door.”
Directed by Bao Nguyen, the whole thing is pretty exciting, drawing from the enough footage (连续镜头) shot that night to provide plenty of fly-on-the-wall moments, added by interviews with musicians and the production crew.
There are plenty of amusing details, like Diana Ross asking Daryl Hall for his signature, which opened the floodgates to these performers releasing their inner fans and moving around the room collecting signatures.
Granted, the trade-off to watching is you’ll likely be humming or singing “We Are the World” for the next several days. Consider that a relatively small price to pay for a front-row seat to this remarkable gathering of musical royalty, and the magic that happened during one long night when, at Jones’ request, they left their egos outside.
1. What is a purpose of the documentary?A.To benefit starving people in Africa. |
B.To be in honour of “We Are the World”. |
C.To remember famous American musicians. |
D.To raise fund for the American Music Awards. |

C.The younger you are, the more you like it. |
D.The production crew are more royal to music. |
