Meet Liam Mills, the first aid specialist who provides lifesaving support at festivals and events, and he’s just 16 years old.
A bit young to be a first aider, aren’t you?
You might think that, but in fact I’ve been doing this for almost a year now. I already have a huge amount of valuable experience.
Why did you join the British Red Cross?
I’ve always been interested in first aid, so when I saw some Red Cross volunteers at a local event I went over for a quick talk. After hearing what they had to say, I jumped at the chance of joining.
What’s the big attraction?
As soon as you’ve treated an injured man, you will never look back. I’ve treated many types of injury now, from cut fingers to even heart disease cases. It’s endlessly challenging and interesting.
What have you learned?
I’m now a skilled volunteer, which means I have additional qualifications (资历) on top of my standard first aid certificate (证书). For example, I’m qualified to use Entonox (laughing gas) for pain management. First aid with the Red Cross is a whole lot more than just cleaning and dressing wounds.
Any standout memories?
Once, my colleague and I attended a call. As we approached the scene, all I could see was someone lying perfectly still on the floor. When you realize that someone is helpless and completely depending on you to do the right thing, you will feel this sudden rush of responsibility. But fortunately, our training means we have the confidence and knowledge to deal with such situations.
Best thing about being an event first aider?
You get to help people, while also enjoying the chance of going to lots of great events. It is really a winwin situation.

“Let me get this clear,” he said, “You went to college for four years so you could come here every day because you have the hope that someday you might say something that will influence someone?” He shook his head as if I were crazy and walked away looking confused. I’m one of those people who look back and wish they had said something smart or witty(风趣的).
Even though that particular student might no longer wonder why I teach, there are days when I wonder. On those days, I remind myself of the real reasons I teach:
It’s in my blood. My mother was my most influential teacher, and she was a 6th grade reading teacher until her death in 1990. She instilled(灌输) in me a love of reading and the knowledge that education opens doors.
Teaching is a way to make a difference. If you throw a stone in a pond the small waves go on and on until they reach the shore. You can’t have waves without a “stone.” Good teachers throw stones that make a positive difference, and that’s what I try to do.
I genuinely(真正地) love teenagers.
I want to share with others what I know and what I have learned through the years. Life is full of ups and downs, and I can help students avoid some potholes(坑) on the road of life, I want to do so. If they’ll allow me to celebrate their victories(胜利) with them, I want to do too.
Teaching isn’t for everyone, but I know I made the right career choice.

Eating taboos are found throughout the world. In many Asian cultures, chopsticks should never be left standing up in a rice bowl. In India, touching food with one's left hand is seen as unclean. And, in Muslim cultures, people do not eat pork.
Interestingly, a taboo in one country may not be a problem in another. For example, in Chinese culture, giving clocks as gifts is frowned on. But that would be fine in America. In fact, a beautiful clock would be a thoughtful gift.
The same goes for some conversation topics. In many Western cultures, it's rude to ask about a person's age, weight, or salary. However, these topics may not be as sensitive in East Asia.
For sure, understanding what not to do can be hard. Fortunately, there are many websites about taboos. Travel guidebooks often have a section on the topic. It's worth taking time to understand another culture's taboos. It shows our respect for our friends around the world.

They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend?
In my opinion, understanding is the most important quality in choosing a good friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.
At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experiences and learn from each other. A good friend has a sense of humor, too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.
When I meet someone that is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I’ve found a good friend.

Out of more than 1,000 Americans who were surveyed, more than half said that they couldn’t recall the phone numbers of their friends and neighbors. In their eyes, there is no point in filling their heads with phone numbers if they are all stored in smart phones that are with them almost all the time.
In fact, most people are suffering from a sort of digital amnesia(健忘). more than 90% of those surveyed agreed that they used the Internet as an online of their brains. Rote memorization(死记硬背) was once an important part of modern education, but we just need a click or slide now. That’s making us worse at remembering things.
Researchers found that when people expected to use the information online, they were less likely to remember actual facts, but more likely to remember how to find them. As a result, we are already becoming ones with our computer tools, growing into interconnected systems that remember less by knowing information than by knowing where the information can be found.
However, some believe it isn’t necessarily a bad thing--maybe it gives them more chances to think through things. We certainly acquire more knowledge now than ever, even if it isn’t all stored in our brains.
Even so, I still believe that there are more risks to this new world of memory beyond losing our ability to recall some information such as who the 15th President was. That kind of information may always be a click away, but the important things are personal ones, like the way your parents smiled at your wedding. It’s harder to recall or find online. If you’re relying on yourself to keep track of those memories, they will be much more meaningful.
1. Paragraph 1 is mainly used to _______.A.serve as the background | B.introduce the topic |
C.explain new research | D.show some data to readers |

C.rote memorization no longer exists in modern life |
D.People find it hard to remember how to find information |
A.Worried | B.Optimistic |
C.Disappointed | D.Confident |
