Today’s teenage generation has been brought up surrounded by one single stereotype (刻板印象): the so-called MTV generation. We’re all constantly glued to our phone and TV screens, the boys are addicted to video games and the girls prefer posting pictures of themselves on the Internet. Both could watch TV series all day and both could do without a book. How accurate is this stereotype?

It turns out that most of them could actually do without a book. “The Kids & Family Reading Report” found that only 24% of 12 to 14-year-olds read five to seven days a week. The percentage goes down to a mere 17% when it comes to 15 to 17-year-olds. And it may come as no surprise that 76% of the former visit social media websites on a daily basis.

Reading frequently has many great benefits: it develops your verbal abilities (especially for kids, it will greatly improve their vocabulary), it improves your focus and concentration, it enhances your imagination, it reduces stress and it’s entertaining! Not only that but research has shown that people who read for pleasure show a greater appetite to engage with stories, texts and learning.

The popular TV show “Game of Thrones” (《权利的游戏》) certainly seems to have motivated a lot of teens to buy George R.R. Martin’s best-selling book series. Sales skyrocketed after the show was first put on in 2011, selling 9 million copies in one year, with many teens and young adults believed to have contributed to this statistic. In contrast, the book series had “only” sold 5 million from the first book’s release till 2011.

With nowadays’ teenagers apparently constantly glued to their screens, TV series “Game of Thrones” seems to have inspired a lot of them to take a break and read a book. Maybe teenagers will end up being the ones solving the issue after all.

1. Why does the author mention “The Kids & Family Reading Report” in paragraph 2?
A.To prove a fact about teenagers’ reading.
B.To stress the importance of daily reading.
C.To introduce some social media websites.
D.To encourage teenagers to read more each week.
2. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The importance of verbal abilities.B.The ways to read for pleasure.
C.The advantages of frequent reading.D.The appetite to engage with learning.
3. What does the underlined word “skyrocketed” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Dropped slightly.B.Increased quickly.
C.Changed frequently.D.Remained surprisingly.
4. How does the author think of the TV series “Game of Thrones”?
A.Positive.B.Defensive.
C.Cautious.D.Doubtful.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要就提高孩子阅读流畅度提出了一些建议。

【推荐1】Fluency is the rate at which the child reads. Fluent readers take note of things like question marks and adjust their voice. Their expression sounds natural, and their voice is not as flat as they read. Children who are fluent readers make their reading sound like talking.     1     Here are some ways to improve your children’s fluency.

First, it’s important to choose “just right” books. They will struggle to read books that are too difficult, spending their time trying to figure out unfamiliar words.     2     If a child is struggling with fluency, consider having him read books that are easy.

3     It’s important to discuss what fluent reading sounds like but even better actually to set an example for your children. This can help your children understand what you mean when you ask them to use the expression more smoothly. Another choice is to have children listen to audiobooks to hear what fluent reading sounds like.

Children can improve their fluency through whispering phones. They are like pretend telephones that children read into. When children read into such phones, they can hear themselves well and use that feedback to think about their expression and reading rate.     4

Use choral reading (合唱式阅读). This occurs when a group of children reads something together, saying the words at the same time. You might read the text out loud by yourself first.     5     Then you can read it together, with them matching your pace and expression.

A.This causes fluency to break down.
B.Give your children materials to listen to.
C.Many children also find choral reading useful.
D.Model for children how reading should sound.
E.Children can hear how the reading should sound.
F.Many children find it’s quite interesting to use them.
G.Their reading sounds effortless, much like carrying on a conversation.

【推荐2】It can be a real struggle trying to learn a new language. I had always enjoyed learning languages in school, but only recently did I start learning German. I found that I could understand and learn individual words easiIy, but when it came to literature, I really struggled. That was when my tutor at university suggested reading some children's books printed in the target language.

At first, I felt a bit silly going on a hunt for a book designed for someone half my age, lout then I realised that everyone has to start somewhere. As children, we are given these basic texts to familiarise our brains with certain vocabulary and writing structures, and from there, we can learn and develop. I started with books which are taught to us as children in the UK.1 managed to find Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.

The beauty of reading books that were introduced to you as a child is that you are already familiar with the plot. As a result, you can work out some of the definitions of words with your prior knowledge of the story. At first, I used to read with the book in one hand and a dictionary in the other, but this method did not work well for me. The method I would recommend is to read a chapter of your chosen children’s book and at the end of that chapter, highlight the words you do not know and then look up the definitions. If you can wait a bit before you use a dictionary, you may be surprised what you can get merely from the context of the sentence in the story. Additionally, a lot of children's books have pictures which may give you a clue as to what or to whom the passage is referring.

1. Why was the author advised to read children’s books?
A.Because she was weak in reading great works.
B.Because she was slow to learn language.
C.Because she liked children's literature.
D.Because she couldn't remember any words.
2. What can kids get from childrens' books according to the passage?
A.Vocabulary and listening skills.
B.Learning methods.
C.Words and structures.
D.Designing skills.
3. What causes the author feel surprised while reading childrens’ books?
A.Grasping the context from the pictures.
B.Looking up the definations of words from a dictionary.
C.Getting familiar with the plots of the story.
D.Understanding the words simply from the context.
4. What can be the best title of the passage?
A.Reading Children's Books
B.The Way of Learning Languages
C.The Method of Using Dictionary
D.My Good Reading Habits

【推荐3】Studies conducted by the National Endowment for the Arts show that Americans, in general, don’t read much literature. The question is, “Why not?” There are lots of excuses people give as the reasons why they haven’t picked up a good book in months or even years Fortunately, for every one of them, there’s often a solution.

Think you just don’t have the time to pick up a classic? Take a book with you everywhere and instead of picking up your cellphone, open the book or e-reader. It’s all about feeding your mind even if it’s only one bit at a time.

While it may be true that owning books was once considered a luxury, these days there are numerous sources for inexpensive literature. The Internet has opened a whole new arena for readers. Of course, the most time-honored method for getting books of pretty much every description at little or no cost is your local public library. Another great resource for inexpensive books is your local used bookstore.

If you don’t know what to read, the best way is by reading everything you can get your hands on. You’ll gradually learn which genres you enjoy reading, and you’ll begin to make connections between books. If you don’t know where to start, find someone who enjoys reading books and ask for recommendations.

Some people say, “Can’t I just watch the movie?” Yes and no. You can watch a movie instead of reading the book on which it’s based, but quite often, they have very little in common case in point: “The Wizard of Oz.” Almost everyone has seen 1939’s classic musical, but it’s a far cry from the original series of books on which it’s based. So you should know the real story first.

A book-even a classic-doesn’t have to bed it f cult to be a great read. It’s true that many famous authors wrote books that are tough to get through for common people. However, lots of them also wrote things that are much more accessible. In fact, many books written for young audiences are great places to start your reading experience. A. A. Milne’s “Winnie the Pooh” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” are books beloved by kids and adults alike.

It’s really not that difficult to make books and literature apart of your life. Start with something manageable and work your way up. If you never read “War and Peace” or “Moby Dick”, that’s fine too.
