A survey of 2, 000 American adults finds that an average American spends nearly $3, 000 a year on unused groceries (杂货).
The survey shows that when people do cook, a quarter of them always make more food than they’re able to finish, usually with the intention of having leftovers (剩菜剩饭). On average, people have leftovers to put into their fridges three times a week; however, they don’t always get around to using them up. Actually, a third admit they’re likely to forget about leftovers once they’re out of sight. Forgetting about food is one of the top reasons people end up having food waste, along with leftovers not being popular among family members(23%). While 4 in 10 have a strong desire to eat their leftovers, a quarter admit they get tired of eating the same thing before they’re able to finish.
“With the rapid rise of food costs, wasting groceries each week hurts both nature and consumers’ wallets, “says director of sustainability at HelloFresh, Jeffrey Yorzyk. “Families cook with the best intention of using their leftovers, but our research shows that they’re generally not consuming all of those leftovers. Getting creative with the food in your fridge can help families feel like they’re eating something new and exciting!”
For some people, what excites them at the supermarket doesn’t do it anymore when they get home. The survey shows that 38%admit they’ve thrown food away simply because they don’t feel like eating it after purchasing it. Some waste starts even before shoppers get home, as a fifth say they don’t know how much food they’ll use when grocery shopping.
With these foods, 22%are not confident they know the best methods to store foods to keep freshness. Happily, seven in ten are trying to cut down on food waste. In fact, once you’ve bought food at the grocery store, there are a number of strategies to ensure you can save it completely and cook it smartly.

Joe Mansueto, founder of the investment company Morningstar, sold lemonade as a kid. “You should always pay attention to customers,” he said. “When somebody’s walking down the street, get out from behind the booth, greet them, talk to them and just make friends with them to attract more customers.”
However, his two sons decided to sell a different drink. When they were 8 and 10, his boys sold cocoa outside their home. “The great thing about business is that there are really no rules. You can be creative and try something different,” Mansueto said.
But it wasn’t enough for US representative Mike Quigley and his older brother to sell drinks. They sold old books at the booth and would rent them out for customers to read while they enjoyed their drinks.
Adam Ochstein, founder of StratEx Partners, a human resources service company, gave frequent visitors cards which were printed with a lemon. Every five drinks, customers got one card which allowed them to pay less than half of the next drink. However, they didn’t price the drinks. “If you want to give nothing, give nothing. If you want to give $2, give $2. I think we had let the adults give more money than they probably would like to, “Today, he suggests kids use social media for marketing.” He said, “It can tell people where the booth is going to be and what unique specials you’re running.”

A social experiment, with more than 1,000 participants, showed that adults are one-and-a-half times more likely to seek advice from those closest to them, than professional sources, in all areas.
When it comes to financial advice, half of those surveyed are more likely to ask family and friends about where to invest money — with 40% relying on their opinion even when it comes to high-risk investment choices over any other sources, including experts. And nearly one in five (19%) would be most likely to seek their better half’s advice on budgeting decisions, while 15% would rather take financial advice from a TV show than turn to an expert. In fact, the opinion of a banker ranked 8% lower than any other financial advice sources when it comes to budgeting matters.
The term “social proof”, coined by Dr Robert Cialdini in 1984, refers to the natural influence those around us have on our decision-making, with one aspect being the “wisdom of friends” which refers to the phenomenon where advice from peers carries much more weight than is wise in important choices. During the experiment, researchers found even when participants say they value expert knowledge, they often go back to the opinions of those closest to them when making a key judgement call.
Commenting on the experiment, Dr Briony Pulford, professor of psychology at the University of Leicester, said, “We prefer advice from friends and family because we trust them and believe that they have our best interests at heart, knowing our preferences and personal values, and taking those into account when advising us. Also, many want to fit in with their peers, so finding out that other people do something makes you more likely to do it, too.” Riaan de Bruyn, from investment app &me, said, “Of course the opinion of our friends and family matters, but when it comes to serious decisions, it is important to take on board expert opinion.”

Uber Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi told Bloomberg News his company's food-delivery in Japan has taken an alternative route to delivering food. The country has strict laws against ride sharing, and its unemployment rate is at 2.4 percent, making a tight job market. With a growing demand for food delivery, more of the elderly population has applied to become couriers.
“The elderly are actually signing up for Eats couriers,” Khosrowshahi said. “Eats has been a huge success for us in Japan.
That plan includes increasing staffing levels in Japan by at least 30 percent over the next year, and these jobs aren't limited to grannies in sneakers.
Uber currently works with eight taxi cab companies in Japan, and the pedestrian courier method is a way to branch out into areas untouched so far. There are cab-hailing apps available, as well as Uber Black, a car-hire service that's only available in Tokyo for now. “It will take time, but we like what we see in terms of the potential of the market” Khosrowshahi said. “

Psychologists used to follow the same line of thinking: After young adulthood, people tend to become stabler as people age. However, more recent studies suggest that something unexpected happens to many people as they reach and pass their 60s: Their personality starts changing again. People’s personality can change in response to their circumstances, adapting to a changing life. These developments clarify personality is not a permanent state but an adaptive way of being.
We can’t say with certainty what factors are driving these shifts, but a few theories exist. One possibility is that personality is shaped by specific life events that tend to happen in older age: retirement, empty nesting or widowhood (丧偶). But such milestones aren’t very reliable sources of change. They affect some people deeply, but have no impact on others. Any one event could mean many different things, depending on its context. Jenny Wagner, a psychologist at the University of Hamburg, in Germany, gave an example. Losing a partner could be a great loss, but for some it could be a bit of a relief at the same time-say, for someone who’s been caring for their ill partner for years.
Granted, old-age personality changes don’t always result from a sense of helplessness or an endlessly shrinking life. Research has shown that when people get older, they commonly recalibrate their goals; though they might be doing less, they tend to prioritize what they find meaningful and really appreciate it. That may involve adjusting to what they can’t control, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re reacting to a bad life—just a different one.
At the same time, not all of the changes coming with old age are unavoidable. And if old adults had more support from their communities and society, perhaps they’d be better able to command their circumstances—rather than having to make up for factors slipping out of their grasp.

That’s according to a new study recently concluded by researchers with the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Researchers found “habitual” tea drinkers—whom they defined as drinking tea at least three or more times a week—had longer and healthier lives than those who did not drink tea as regularly. But these benefits were only seen in those who drank green tea, not black tea.
To come to this conclusion, researchers analyzed 100,902 Chinese participants with no history of heart attack or cancer. They were divided into two groups, those who drank tea three or more times a week, and those who drank tea less than three times a week. Participants were then followed-up after seven years.
In the end, the researchers found that regular tea drinkers had a 20 percent lower risk of suffering from heart disease, and a 22 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease than those who never or seldom drank tea. Then, to look at the “potential influence of changes in tea drinking behavior,” researchers about eight years later took a part of study participants—14,081 people—and assessed them after five years. Finally, they found those who continued to drink tea three or more times a week had a 56 percent lower risk of deadly heart disease.
But why is green tea more beneficial than black? Senior author Dr. Dongfeng Gu said that green tea is rich in polyphenols(多酚), as a previous study shows, which, “protect against cardiovascular(心血管的) disease and its risk factors.” Black tea, on the other hand, is fermented(发酵), during which process “polyphenols may lose their antioxidant effects.”
“In our study population, 49% of habitual tea drinkers consumed green tea most frequently, while only 8% preferred black tea,” he said. “The small percentage of habitual black tea drinkers might make it more difficult to observe strong associations, but our findings hint at a differential effect between tea types.”

Now, imagine a cat walking across the same floor — the difference is the cat moves in total silence. Cats can fully retract (缩回) their claws, giving them superior ability to remain silence.
But why do cats have retractable claws, whereas dogs do not?
It all comes down to how cats and dogs use their claws. Cats use their claws primarily to attack their target, said Anthony Russell, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. They use their front claws to grab and hold on to their target and their back claws to cut open the target’s belly.
Cats need to keep their claws sharp to secure that next meal. Extended all the time, their claws would get less sharp as they scrape the ground, much like how a nail file deals with sharp points on a human fingernail.
Dogs, on the other hand, are social hunters. They work in groups to take down larger animals, wearing their target out over longer distances. For dogs, “if you’re hunting a moose or something, you wander along for kilometres and bite it until it is fatigued, and then you all jump on it,” Russell said. “Whereas cats essentially have a short burst, and then it’s over. Either the target gets away, or the target is captured.”
With more hunters working together, it’s less important for dogs to be able to grab and hold onto their target, so they don’t have to keep their claws as sharp. Sheer numbers are enough to give them the advantage.
But dogs’ claws aren’t completely useless. Dogs’ claws help them stand firmly on the earth and change directions quickly — a useful adaptation for pursuing target over long distances.
In nature’s silent dance, cats’ retractable claws are knives for quick attacks, while dogs’ strong claws make them good chasers. Each claw tells a tale of adaptation made to their unique hunting styles.

It is located near the Yazihe River at Guanghan City, Sichuan Province and as Sichuan is where the ancient state of Shu (蜀国) was located, it is believed that Sanxingdui was the capital of the ancient “Shu culture”.
The site was originally discovered in the 1920s by a farmer. A huge surprise came in 1986 when two sacrificial pits (祭祀坑) filled with more than 1,000 cultural relics, including gold masks, bronze sacred trees, bronze ware, jade ware and ivory, were discovered by local workers excavating (挖掘) clay for bricks.
On March 20, 2021, officials announced that they had discovered six new sacrificial pits at the Sanxingdui Ruins site and have found nearly 500 important cultural relics to date. The finding quickly gained attention worldwide.
During about a year of hard work, nearly 2,000 cultural relics were unearthed in these six newly discovered sacrificial pits. In September, officials held another media briefing and announced the discovery of 1,771 cultural relics from the number three and number four pits, of which 557 relics were relatively complete and the rest are fragments.
Among the items, the gold mask is the most impressive. It was found in June. After restoration, it turned out to be the biggest complete gold mask found at the site, with fine texture and quality. Three bronze figures (雕像) with their palms pressed together and their heads twisted to the right, were also a unique find among Sanxingdui items in terms of their shape and decorative pattern.
Experts said that these new discoveries provided further material for studying the bronze casting (铸造) technology of the Shu people as well as their art, religious beliefs, social system and cultural exchanges with surrounding areas.
