Book Recommendation
Olive, Mabel and Me by Andrew Cotter
This is a funny telling of how a sports commentator turned his two dogs into Internet sensations (轰动). If you’ve seen videos of dogs and laughed your but t off, the book provides the same humor, along with wonderful pictures of dogs and Scottish highlands. Let’s face it—who doesn’t need a good laugh, and pictures of dogs?

Bruno, Chief of Police by Martin Walker
A mystery series focused on Bruno Courrèges, the chief of police in the small town of St. Denis in the Périgord region of southwestern France. Walker brings his knowledge both as a journalist and as a resident of St. Denis to these pages, as he explores the culture and socio-economic changes occurring in contemporary rural France.
—Edward Copenhagen
Land of Aeolia by Ilias Venezis, translated by Therese Sellers
The author writes of his peaceful childhood summers in Anatolia, before the horrors of World War I and the loss of his homeland. This is a beautiful novel that is beyond language and country and brings back memories of a lost world. I have found some English translations of modern Greek literature lacking the ability to express the richness of the Greek language, but Sellers deals with this playful and magical language beautifully.

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer
I wish everyone hoping to start a home garden could read the chapter The Three Sisters. The author, an authority on plant study, describes how the three work and play together. She expertly creates a sense of mystery and beauty of everyday life. And she reminds readers how much we could learn from our sisters and brothers.

The authors said they have seen many news stories and studies in recent years warning parents about monitoring (监视) both the quality of the content and the amount of time their kids spent with tablets, phones and smart watches. But they didn’t see any books that were written for kids on the topic.
“We hope that it will help kids connect the topic,” Zofrea said. She said it reminded her that her mother warned her not to overdo it on Halloween candy. She didn’t follow the advice and wolfed down all her treat and felt sick later. “Like with food, we can set rules and lecture kids. It’ll be more effective if they start to notice how they feel,” Zofrea said.
The authors both work for DefenderShield, a Tampa-based company that sells products to block electromagnetic field radiation (电磁辐射) from laptops, cell phones and tablets. Their work there is what inspired the book, though they know it can be a heated topic because of the debate over the science of radiation’s effects.
While concerns are rising about the amount of time kids spend online, parents always remain on their phones at home. “I’ve always said children learn from what we do and not what we say,” said Pam Patranella, a doctor who reviewed the book and liked the idea of taking the screen time lesson to kids.
The book’s authors said parents need to be reminded that their kids have grown up in a different world, one that has had computers and tablets since the day they were born. “We want to bring up the concept (观念) of digital wellness for families and children,” Ribeiro said.

I also enjoy hearing what people are doing and finding out what they think. Reading gives me the chance to get to know hundreds of new people! It also teaches you to see things from other people’s point of view, and understand other people’s decisions or opinions. With a book, you can hear everything a character is thinking or feeling.
So my challenge for you is this: to read a book for 15 minutes every single day for a month. Take 15 minutes when you are waking up, going to bed, eating lunch, or having a coffee. If you read a lot, why not try 15 minutes of an English book?
A.It’s better for your eyes. |
B.Reading relieves your stress. |
C.You really can be inside someone else’s head! |
D.Everyone is different and has their own interests. |

【推荐3】A few books recommended by Bill Gates
Reading is my favorite way to indulge (放纵)my desire to know the world. Although I get to meet with a lot of interesting people and visit fascinating places through my work, I still think books are the best way to explore new topics that interest you. Here are four amazing books I read recently:
Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, by Matthew Desmond. If you want a good understanding of how the issues that cause poverty are twisted (交织)together, you should read this book. Desmond gave me a better sense of what it is like to be poor in this country than anything else I have read.
Energy and Civilization: A History, by Vaclav Smil. Smil is one of my favorite authors, and this is his most famous book. He presents clearly how our need for energy has shaped human history. It’s not the easiest book to read, but at the end you’ll feel smarter and better informed about how energy innovation changes the course of civilizations.
The Best We Could Do, by Thi Bui. This novel explores what it means to be a parent and a refugee (难 民).The author’s family fled Vietnam in 1978. After giving birth to her own child, she decides to learn more about her parents’ experiences of growing up in a country torn apart by foreign occupiers.
Believe Me: A Memoir of Love, Death, and JazzChickens, by Eddie Izzard. Izzard’s personal story in this book is attractive: he survived a difficult childhood and worked continuously to overcome his lack of natural talent and become an international star. If you’re a huge fen of him like I am, you’ll love this book. His written voice is very similar to his stage voice, and I found myself laughing out loud several times while reading it.
1. What does Matthew Desmond try to explore?A.Different causes of poverty. |
B.The struggle of poor people. |
C.How to escape from poverty. |
D.Ways to live in a poor country. |
A.economy | B.education | C.literature | D.history |
A.They are popular around the world. |
B.They are expected to inspire readers. |
C.They focus on lives of ordinary people. |
D.They are based on personal experiences. |
