COVID-19 made "social distancing” a big problem for 2020 and forced us to adapt in new and often creative ways. My super-social teenage daughters adapted by meeting with their friends on video chat； school campuses closed but adapted with online classes.
However, social distancing with my parents added an extra challenge. We'd recently moved them(very old) into the house across the street from us. It was wonderful to have them so close, but once COVID-19 arrived, everything changed.

We decided to give Tootsie the first shot at it. We tied a small package loosely over her head and sent her toward my parents ' door. Holding our breath, we watched as she approached the house. Suddenly, she turned left, made a beeline for a largedirtpatch (土堆),shook the package from her neck, and started to bury it, but stopped by our shouts of dismay.
Little Stevie was up next. He had more focus ； surely he could do the job. With the package affixed to his back, we set him on course. Stevie looked strong going in. He ran toward the door and nearly made it, but then a lizard (壁虎)ran in front of him. Chasing lizards is Stevie's favorite pastime, so we knew all bets were off. Sure enough, Stevie chased that lizard all over the yard and then went running down the street. I watched with disappointment as my daughters disappeared after him.

The Real Champion
I like running and for me, success was winning every race I participated in. My classmates called me Incredible Dash. One day, there was a sporting event planned in my school. Well-prepared for the running competition, I took part in almost every race there was. A large number of people gathered to watch. Crowds were eager to see the running race because it was the most exciting event. When the race for 400m started, all the boys ran fast. Unsurprisingly, I finished first in the race and received a big round of applause. While it was tiring, I felt proud and was on top of my world.
In the race for 200m, I ran full speed and finished the race first once again. The crowd gave thundering claps to me. I jumped all over the ground and was not bothered to give handshakes to my fellow racers.
Then came the race for 100m. Discouraged by the previous races, most boys quit the race except one, a boy named Matt who was invited as an honorary runner. Matt was born with low vision but he was a determined participant of many sports. The judge came to Matt and explained the situation, asking whether he would like to quit too. I, wild with joy, thought I would win the champion without effort. However, to everyone’s surprise, Matt decided to complete the event. I sniffed (嗤之以鼻), “It is a waste of time. I bet he even doesn’t figure out where the finish line is.”
The race of two started. On hearing the starting gun, both Matt and I ran to the finish line, Soon I sped up and left Matt behind. Just 30 meters before arriving at the finish line, I was expecting to receive the applause for the third time when I suffered a leg spasm (抽筋).

“It must be ET’s baby daughter,” I said.
Amanda explained that she’d heard a noise outside her room. She’d taken her flashlight, opened the door and shined it across the garden. A tiny elephant stared back at her, eyes in terror. Not knowing what to do, Amanda had closed the door and climbed out of a back window to call me.
Elephants are fantastic mothers — ET would never leave her baby unattended. Apparently, the baby elephant had somehow slipped under the fence.
Amanda and I had to get her inside the house to keep her safe until we could get her back to her mother. Her frightened eyes stared at us through the leaves. I walked slowly toward the Ellie. She watched me but as soon as I was within touching distance, she ran behind the house. Amanda and I ran after her. Finally, we managed to corner the Ellie in the parking area. She stood completely still, head down and eyes flashing anxiously at any movement or sound. I tried approaching her again, and this time she didn’t resist, allowing us to gently get her into my home.
I kept talking to her, telling her she was safe and that we would get her back to her mum. Then I called the reserve center for help and, to our relief, they promised to come right away.

I had refused my parents offer to accompany me. I meant to show them that I was brave enough to face the difficulty on my own. Thankfully, I forgot my anxiety as I looked around the dentist’s room. Tools of different sizes were arranged neatly in a tray (托盘) on the tiny table which was connected to a chair with buttons and a light hanging right over it. I didn’t look at my dentist in the eye as I took my place on the chair nervously. I almost jumped out of the seat when all of a sudden the chair moved and I was lying down facing the bright yellow light.
The dentist spoke in a relaxing voice behind her mask. Everything was going smoothly and I was quite proud of myself. Then something went wrong. I was picking up the cup of water placed next to the chair for patients to rinse (冲洗) their mouths when I caught sight of the dental drill. Panic related to a bad childhood experience involving the drill kicked into me, and I spat out the rinsing water, right into the surprised dentist’s face. I froze with awkwardness and my mind went blank.
