In a summer holiday, some of my friends planned to take a hike in a jungle, including Jake and Liam. They asked me if I would like to go with them. I loved outdoor activities, so I immediately said yes.

It was sunny the following morning. I was in a very good mood. I was so excited about hiking since it was the first time that I had hiked with them. I ate a light breakfast. After that, I hurriedly ran out of my house to meet them. At that time, I didn’t expect there was a horrible experience ahead.

The jungle where we were going was far from our area. Its name is Salymbia Jungle. It took about three hours to get there by bus, but it wasn’t a boring journey as we were all eager to hike. After we got off the bus, we found a local guide to ensure our safety. The guide, whose name is Thomas, said that he had hiked in the Salymbia Jungle lots of times and that he was familiar with the route. When we arrived, Thomas told us never to leave the group. He warned us that we would easily get lost in the jungle if we walked alone. Then we began to hike.

There were a wide variety of plants which we had never seen before. All of us were amazed at the beauty of the scenery and the sounds of the creatures. After a while, we were walking and then I looked at my wrist to check the time, but then I realized that my watch fell off. Then I walked back without informing anyone. I did not worry about getting lost since there were other people behind and I thought I would have been able to keep up with the crowd. I went back to search through the pathway so attentively that I lost track of the time and sight of my friends. I immediately realized that I was alone.

At the time I was living in a small village about 25 miles from London. That was the advantage of living there because you could get to London in half an hour. That was by train of course. If you went by car, it’d take about three times as long especially if you travelled in the morning rush hour. The reason why I was giving you this travel information in detail was that I had to make a choice between the car and the train.

I’d seen an advertisement in a national newspaper, which had asked for someone who had some knowledge of computing, had worked at least for two years in car sales and finally was not afraid of travelling up and down the motorway to London every day from a place not far from where I lived. It seemed interesting work and was quite different from the job I had at the time. The interview was to take place at 10:00 a.m. on a Monday morning in January.

Throughout the weekend I couldn’t make up my mind whether to travel by car or by train. At the end of Sunday I decided to drive my car because after all the job was to do with cars.

On the day of the interview I got up at 6:00 a.m. as I was terrified of being late. I usually woke up early because of the loud noise of the traffic outside my bedroom window in the morning. On this particular morning, everything seemed strangely silent. I looked out of the window and realized why: There was a thick blanket of snow on the road and it was still snowing heavily. I panicked. Clearly now I’d have to go by train. I telephoned the station and asked what time the next train down to London would be. I was informed that all services had been cancelled. I asked by whom they had been cancelled. I never knew the answer to that question because I’d been cut off.

One of the most difficult realities about the teaching profession is that we seldom know if we have made a difference. When I become discouraged about my job, my students or myself, I often think back to one particular day of my teaching career.

My first year of teaching was almost over. I taught junior English at Milford High School on a one-year contract. I had a bright group of students and I was grateful for that. However, as the end of the school year drew to a close, my students continually asked if the regular teacher would be returning. I tried to respond with little emotion. Deep down, though, I was more bothered by leaving than I admitted.

Finally, the day came to give my last final exam. I passed the office before the bell rang and saw a couple of the students from my class, and I thought how difficult saying good-bye would be. They were a group with whom I could joke, have fun and share ideas. Teaching them was a pleasure, and we all had learned a lot that year. But, as successful students do, they were moving on to twelfth grade, and I doubted they would remember much about me after a few more years of their academic careers and busy lives.

Just about this time I was on hall duty outside my classroom, and I noticed the crowds thinning out and classroom doors shutting. I looked in my room to find only two students in attendance. When I commented that it was awfully strange that their classmates were so late, they agreed and then quickly asked to get a drink outside. The hallway was awfully quiet. I walked down the hall several times to see if anyone was coming. Suddenly, I heard footsteps coming down the hall. I was annoyed that after such a great year with these kids, I would — on their last day with me — have to give them a lecture about responsibility.

It was the last game of the season. I had been playing soccer all summer. I really enjoyed running around with the other players in my bright blue uniform, chasing the black and white ball across the grassy field. As much as I tried, though, I still had not scored one single goal.

“Don’t give up,” said my coach. Before each game, we had a practice session. He showed me and my team how to pass the ball to each other and take shots at the goal. I was pretty good at passing the ball, but even during practices, I couldn’t kick the ball past the goalkeeper. I wondered if I should quit soccer for good.

“Don’t give up,” said my teammates. Some had been playing soccer for a couple of years, and some were new to the game just like me. “You just need to keep trying and you will get better.” So I stayed on the team and did my best.

The break was over and the judge blew his whistle to start the game again. The two teams walked back onto the field, both determined to win. I bent, tied up my shoelace and heard my coach whisper in my ear. “Look for an opportunity to get the ball. You can do it.”

I stood up and took a deep breath. Even if I didn’t get one goal all summer, I knew that I had tried my best. That was something to be proud of. So I smiled at my coach and headed to my position. The whistle blew, and the game continued.

The score was tied (平局) with one goal each. The yellow team was pretty good, but my blue team was fast. Our ponytails (马尾辫) jumped up and down as we ran, with many feet kicking wildly at the ball when it came near us. I was off to the side when the ball headed my way. I ran over to it and kicked it.

I watched it land right in front of a girl on the yellow team who expertly stopped it and sent it back in the other direction. I sighed.
