Do you love holidays but hate the increase weight that follows? You are not alone.
Holidays are happy days with pleasure and delicious foods. Many people, however, are worried about the weight that comes along with these delicious foods.
With proper planning, though, it is possible to control your weight. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too much. You don’t have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy. The following suggestions may be of some help to you.
Do not miss meals. Before you leave home for a feast (宴会), have a small, low-fat snack (小吃). This may help to keep you from getting too excited before delicious foods. Begin with clear soup and fruit or vegetables. A large glass of water before you eat may help you feel full. Use a small plate; a large plate will encourage you to have more than enough.
Better not have high-fat foods. Dishes that look oily or creamy have much fat in them.
Choose lean meat (瘦肉). Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables.
If you have a sweet tooth, try mints (薄荷) and fruits. They don’t have fat content as cream and chocolate.
Don’t let exercise take a break during the holidays. A 20-minute walk after a meal can help burn off excess (过多的) calories.

Experts have also proved that outdoor activities at an early age can help children form healthy habits for life. But don’t expect kids to understand about those things. Some kids just aren’t into exercise, but that shouldn’t mean they have to be addicted to the TV. So parents could do something to help inactive kids fall in love with physical activity.
If parents sit in front of the TV every night, kids aren’t likely to respect restrictions(限制) you set on their screen time either. So check your own behavior and serve as a role model by putting physical activity into your everyday life. Walk instead of driving if possible. Regularly join in activities that you enjoy and let your kids see how much you enjoy them. In this way, they may “do as the Romans do”. Make sure that children’s fitness is included in the family schedule as well as school, work and shopping. Then you and your children are more likely to stick to an exercise plan. And your children will begin to expect that Sunday morning usually means a hike ride, and on a couple of nights after dinner the family takes a light walk through the neighborhood.
Children who aren’t naturally good at physical activity may be worried about their lack of physical skills and even fear public failure. They need all the support and encouragement from parents. Negative comments don’t work and will only make them feel bad. Remember, focus on the effort—choosing to be active or trying to improve a skill—rather than the result.

For example, “in loco parentis” is a Latin term meaning “in the place of a parent”. It describes when someone else accepts responsibility to act in the interests of a child. This idea developed long ago in British common law to define the responsibility of teachers towards their students. For years, American courts supported in loco parentis in cases such as Gott vs Berea College in 1913.
Gott owned a restaurant off campus. Berea threatened to dismiss students who ate at places not owned by the school. The Kentucky high court decided that in loco parentis justified that rule. In loco parentis meant that male and female college students usually had to live in separate buildings. Women had to be back at their dorms by ten or eleven on school nights.
But in the 1960s, students began to protest rules and restrictions like these. At the same time, courts began to support students who were being punished for being politically and socially different.
Students were not considered adults until 21. Then, in 1971, the 26th Amendment to the Constitution (宪法修正案) set the voting age at 18. So in loco parentis no longer really applied. Slowly, colleges began to treat students not as children, but as adults. Students came to be seen as consumers of educational services.
Gary Dickstein, an assistant vice president at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, says in loco parentis is not really gone. It just looks different. Today’s parents, he says, are often heavily involved in students’ lives. They are known as “helicopter parents”; they always seem to stay above their children. Gary Dickstein says these parents are very likely to question decisions, especially about safety issues and grades. They want to make sure their financial investment is not being wasted.
As a result, in loco parentis has been replaced by what some administrators call a partnership between the school and the family. As a matter of fact, the orientation programme for new students at Virginia Tech this summer includes a meeting for parents called “Parents as Partners”.

Blood transfusions aren’t as simple as taking blood from one person and giving it to someone else. There are several different blood types, and they don’t all mix well. If someone gets a transfusion of the wrong kind of blood, their body will reject the blood cells, causing problems.
A new trial is being carried out in the United Kingdom. What’s new in the experiment is that people are being given red blood cells that were created in a laboratory. The scientists used stem cells from a blood sample to grow billions of brand new red blood cells. So the red blood cells in the experiment never actually existed inside anyone.
There are several reasons why this could be even better than a regular blood transfusion. For one thing, the red blood cells that are created can be adjusted for people with different blood types. That will be extremely helpful for people with rare blood types.
Also, the red blood cells created are brand new, meaning they last longer. Red blood cells live for about 120 days. A normal transfusion has red blood cells of all different ages. That means only a part of them are brand new. If the lab-created red blood cells last longer, it could mean that patients will need fewer transfusions.
To test the safety of the lab-grown red blood cells, researchers have given a couple of teaspoons of lab-created blood to two healthy people. Both people seem to be doing just fine after the transfusions. In all, the red blood cells from the lab will be tested on 10 people, and compared to normal transfusions.
The new process isn’t expected to replace normal blood transfusions, which will remain hugely important. Though the technology level has improved, growing red blood cells in a lab is extremely expensive. And a lot of work and testing still need to be done.
But if it’s successful, in the future the process could make life much easier for patients who often need transfusions—even those with rare blood types.

Don’t worry. Here is how it goes:
