13-year-old Ava Dorsey is the founder of Ava’s Pet Palace, a business that sells organic dog and cat treats. “I actually had the idea when I was six with a picture I drew of a palace,” she says. It was a detailed design for dogs and cats and she had serious plans to build it one day.

Unlike most dog treats that you find in stores, dog treats sold by Ava’s Pet Palace are 100% organic, and are non-GMO (非转基因). Ava has set a goal for herself with these dog treats, and she wants every treat to be healthy, tasty, and top-quality. Seriously, some of her treats sound delicious enough for people to eat! “All of my bags now have the USDA organic stamp, and we’re very excited to have gotten it because it’s something I’ve wanted for a long time,” she says. “A lot of stores like to see organic products because customers like it, so that was really exciting.”

Ava says the biggest challenge of being a kid in business is when people don’t take her seriously, but undoubtedly Ava has proved that her doubters are wrong! When asked how she defines (定义) success . Ava says, “When you hit a bump in the road, you shouldn’t give up and you keep trying.” She learned that from her mom, who sounds like a smart lady! Some more things Ava has learned from her years in business: Hard work eventually pays off and there is nothing wrong with asking for help.

As far as the future of the pet treats industry goes, Ava is optimistic—but she’d also like to be an inspiration for change. “There’s not much diversity (多样性) right now, so that’s something I would love to see in the future,” says Ava. “I would also love to see more kids in this industry. There aren’t many other teenagers around, and I hope that I can be an inspiration to others who hope to lead the pet industry.”

【推荐1】Becoming a team leader is often someone's first experience of management responsibility. Many team leaders are promoted from within the team because they were good team members.     1     How can people develop good team leader qualities?

    2

Making all decisions on your own rather than consulting your staff will often be unpopular especially when it involves major changes to the way they work. Before making any changes, consider how these changes may affect people, ensuring the team understand the results of the changes and don't just arbitrarily introduce them.

Be prepared to listen.

When individuals in the team are not happy, they can sometimes express their dissatisfaction.     3     Take the time to listen rather than become defensive. Learning to listen will help you to handle potentially explosive situations. It enables people to express their frustration and then calm down and speak more reasonably.

Lead by example.

4     This means being a good role model for your team in terms of what you expect yourself in terms of behavior. This quality will help your team members see how they can follow your example in everything they do.

Be prepared to admit mistakes.

Just being the team leader doesn't mean you will stop making mistakes. When it does happen, be ready to admit them. Playing the ‘blame game’ will only mean that any future mistakes are hidden away possibly.     5

A.Recognize the value of yourselves.
B.Involve the team in decisions that affect them.
C.Don't view this as a direct challenge to your authority.

3】Noa Mintz has started her own nanny (保姆) agency since August 2012. She employed Allison Johnson in 2014 to take charge of day-to-day business operations while she attended her first year of high school. She rents a room in an office building in Midtown Manhattan where Johnson works.

Like any teenager, Noa has had to depend on her parents for some help. Her father is the registered owner of her business. He’s helped raise front money for legal fees. But Nannies by Noa is all her brainchild. The idea came about as a result of a challenge made by her mother: find a better nanny for their family.

She did just that, and then she started helping her mother’s friends find nannies. “I found it fun to get to know a family and their needs — and especially to find a nanny,” she said. So, Nannies by Noa was born. It was the summer of 2012, before she entered 7th grade.

She’s designed a thorough review process: an application, an in-person interview with a trained nanny, the reference and background check and a phone interview. Her business has seen a considerable success: from 50 clients (客户) in 2013 to 190 clients today.

At first, she charged $ 100 to $ 200. “I wasn’t charging enough. Even clients would say, ‘You realize you should be charging way, way more,’” added Noa, whose clients are mostly looking for long-term help. She’s changed her business model since: Nannies by Noa now takes a percentage of the overall rate, which is usually 15% of the nanny’s first year gross salary.

While Noa said she has other business ideas, she also would consider other careers. “Perhaps I’ll start another company. We will see,” said Noa.
