Nowadays, a lot of young people seem to spend much of     1     (they) free time either watching television or playing computer games. Certainly, these things are entertaining, but they don’t contribute   much     2     developing their brains. Many believe   that reading   books, and     3     (especial) fiction, is a much more effective way of achieving this. Apart from being a pleasant way to relax, the most obvious benefit we get from reading a good story is a     4     (grow) vocabulary. We come across new words in reading and gradually become more confident with complex words.

This year, the 13th Spring Festival Joint Exhibition of Chinese Books,     1    theme was “Reading China”, was held on January 24th in 85 bookstores worldwide. It carried out a variety of activities such as book exhibitions and cultural performances. Books     2    (display)in the exhibition were philosophical and   artistic, which     3    (close) met the needs of overseas readers. Overall, this year’s book exhibition presented the newest and finest Chinese publications     4     local readers so that they could better understand China in the new era.

A graduation speech given by Chief Justice John Roberts    1    (become) a talking point after the Washington Post published it.

Roberts addressed his son's ninth grade graduating class. He advised the young graduates    2    (take) life's setbacks (挫折) in their stride (从容地). But he did not wish    3    (they) good luck.

“Now, the speakers will typically also wish you good luck and extend good    4    (wish) to you. I will not do that, and I will tell you why,” Roberts said.

“From time to time, in the years to come, I hope you will be treated    5    (unfair), so that you will come to know the value of justice. Sorry to say, but I hope you will be lonely from time to time, so that you don't take friends    6    granted. I wish you bad luck again, from time to time, so that you will be conscious of the role of chance in life and understand your success is not completely deserved and    7    the failure of others is not completely deserved either.”

He continued, “I hope you    8    (ignore), so you know the importance of listening to others,    9    I hope you will have just enough pain to learn compassion.”(同情心)

In the end, each graduate received a pocket-size (袖珍的) copy of the Constitution    10    (sign) by Roberts.

Robert is fifteen     1     (year) old and in the tenth grade at a high school near his home. Life is hard for his family. His father,     2     was once a doctor, is now ill in bed. Every morning, after finishing delivering (递送) the newspapers, he     3     (hurry) to school. The school begins     4     8 o’clock every morning. He     5     (usual) earns about 80 dollars a month and     6     (much) during his holidays. He wants to buy a new bike and spend some of the money     7     (buy) books and clothes for himself, and he has to spend some of his money on food for his family. He saves the rest     8     (pay) for his college fees. He     9     (do) hope to go to college after he graduates from high school and find a good job     10     he graduates from college. He hopes to earn much more money to support his poor family in the future.
