Before we work on the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, I would like to give two suggestions that will greatly add the value you will receive from this material (阅读材料).
First, I would recommend that you do not see this material as a book, in the sense that it is something just read once and put on a shelf.
You may choose to read it through once for a sense of the whole, but the material is designed to be a companion in the continual process of change and growth. As you progress to deeper levels of understanding and practice, you are supposed to go back time and again to the principles contained in each habit and work to expand your knowledge, skill, and desire.
Second, I would suggest that you change from the role of learner to that of a teacher while reading this material. Take an inside-out approach and read with the purpose in mind of sharing or discussing what you learn with someone else within 48 hours after you learn it. Read as though you are going to teach it to others, while it is still fresh, and notice the difference in your mental and emotional process.
I am sure if you approach the material in this way, you will not only better remember what you read, but your perspective will be expanded, your understanding deepened, and your motivation to apply the material increased.
In addition, as you openly, honestly share what you are learning with others, you will be surprised to find that negative labels (负面标签) or perceptions others may have had of you tend to disappear. Those you teach will see you as a changing, growing person and will be more likely to be helpful and supportive as you work, perhaps together to integrate the seven habits into your lives.

Record your expenses.
The first step to start saving money is figuring out how much you spend.
Include saving in your budget.
Find ways to cut spending.
If you can’t save as much as you’d like, it might be time to cut back on expenses. Identify unnecessary things, such as entertainment and dining out, which you can spend less on. Look for ways to save on your fixed monthly expenses, such as your car insurance or cell phone plan, as well.
One of the best ways to save money is to set an objective. Start by thinking about what you might want to save for-both in the short term (one to three years)and the long term (four or more years). Then estimate how much money you’ll need and how long it might take you to save it.

When we have a hard time, we may turn to others for help.
You had better turn yourself into your own hero. That is the idea behind Kendra Levin’s self-help book The Hero Is You. He studied stories from many different time periods and many different cultures. He found that many stories had something in common: a hero who goes on a journey.
It’s essential to know your strengths and weaknesses. Levin explains that when we know our strengths, we can use them fully. In difficult times, we can make our lives easier by focusing on our strengths.
You might as well have small goals within a larger goal. Levin reminds us that the hero’s journey is not a one-time thing. It is a journey you are on your entire life. So, she suggests having small goals that you can measure in some way. And that's especially helpful if you have a large goal.
A.We may even wish we had a hero to help us. |
B.It's recommended to write out your mission and vision. |

F.On this journey, the hero overcomes a great challenge and changes for the better. |
G.To feel a sense of accomplishment, it’s so important to break it down into smaller pieces. |
An idea that started in Seattle's public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same time.
In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit (追求) to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched (发起)the "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book " project in 1998. Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.
In Chicago, the mayor appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the "One Book, One Chicago" program. As a result, reading clubs and neighbourhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character.
The only problem arose in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity can be achieved .Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point, putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself.
Ultimately as Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.
1. What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?
A.To invite authors to guide readers. |
B.To encourage people to read and share. |
C.To involve people in community service. |
D.To promote the friendship between cities. |
A.In large communities with little sense of unity |
B.In large cities where libraries are far from home |
C.In medium-sized cities with a diverse population |
D.In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached |
A.exchanged ideas with each other |
B.discussed the meaning of a word |
C.gave life experience |
D.used the same language |
A.the careful selection of a proper book |
B.the growing popularity of the writers |
C.the number of people who benefit from reading. |

【推荐2】The Tianjin Binhai Public Library was described by The Daily Mail as “the world’s ultimate library” in 2017, and “breathtaking” was the word chosen for it. One book at the library and you’ll see why. With its futuristic design and walls loaded with books, it’s the dream library of every book lover.
But as the awe continues, there’s a burning question lying in the back of our minds: When physical bookstores are closing down one by one, what makes libraries immune from digitalization? And do we still need libraries as we’ve got the Internet in our hands?
Reporter Ian Clark has the answer. “Libraries are not declining in importance - people are simply changing the way they use them,” he wrote. What Clark means is that libraries have shifted from simply being storehouses of books to a medium to help “bridge the gap between the haves and the have-nots”. According to him, Libraries Are Essential. Since not everyone can afford a smart phone, a tablet or an Internet connection, and not everyone has the know-how to search the internet efficiently, it’s public libraries that make sure that these resources and technologies are available to a larger group of people. And one of the pitfalls that come with online materials is that they’re not always trustworthy. “Google doesn’t tell you what you’re not getting, so people need to evaluate the quality and completeness of what they see on their screens, ” Sarah Pritchard, dean of libraries at Northwestern University, told Northwestern Research Magazine. And libraries are usually where that “evaluation” happens.
But all of these practical functions aside, we still need the physical space that a library provides. It’s something that's called a “third place”, according to the Seattle Times. This is a place in which we can fully concentrate on our study and work without easily getting distracted. And compared to other “third places” like coffee shops, libraries have a “non-commercial nature” that allows you to relax completely. “Nobody is trying to sell you anything in the library. There is no pressure to buy and there is no judgment of your choices,” Anne Goulding, a professor at Victoria University in New Zealand, said. “There are few other spaces that you can just ‘be’ without somebody questioning your presence or your motivation.”

J.K. Rowling is making her return to children's literature for a good cause. In a blog post published on her website Tuesday, the author announced that she will release a new story called The Ickabog, releasing new chapters weekly to help distract children in lockdown as a result of the novel coronavirus.
The author explained that she formulated(构想出) the idea for her new story while writing Harry Potter, and had the intent of publishing it after releasing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — the new story is not connected to Potter.
“Over time I came to think of it as a story that belonged to my two younger children, because I’d read it to them in the evenings when they were little, which has always been a happy family memory,” she wrote. However, amid the novel coronavirus, the author decided she wanted to publish her story free, “for children in lockdown.”
She will post new chapters every weekday between May 26 and July 10 on the Ickabog website. The Ickabog will be published in November 2020 in English in print, eBook and audio book formats.

A recent study conducted by University of Delaware researchers found that speech-language therapy (疗法) improves children’s vocabulary growth. The study, which was published in the journal Journal of Speech-Language and Hearing Research, highlights one of the first studies on the impact of exercise on vocabulary learning in children.
Children ages 6 to 12 were taught new words before doing one of three things: swimming, CrossFit exercises, or coloring a sheet. In follow-up tests of vocabulary words, the children who swam were 13% more accurate.
It makes sense to the lead researcher, Maddy Pruitt, a former college swimmer who now attends CrossFit classes on a regular basis. "Motor movement aids in the encoding (编码) of new words, "she explained, adding that exercise has been shown to increase levels of brain derived neurotrophic factor (脑源性神经营养素), a protein Pruitt refers to as the “Miracle-Gro for the brain”.
So, why did swimming make a difference but CrossFit didn’t? Pruitt attributes it to the amount of energy required by the brain during each exercise. Swimming is an activity that children can do without much thought or instruction. While the CrossFit exercises were new to them, it was more automatic. The children had to learn the moves, which took mental energy.
“We were very excited about this study because it is applicable to clinicians, caregivers, and educators who can put it into practice,” Pruitt said. “It’s not anything out of the ordinary. However, it has the potential to significantly improve the outcomes.”
1. What does the research focus on?A.The effect of exercise on word learning in children. |

This machine breaks down the waste in less than 24 hours — reducing the volume by up to 90% — producing a material that can be put back on the farm. The machine works by using heat and enzymes to reduce the moisture content. It’s hoped it will help the environment.
“Going to landfill is not sustainable. And it’s doing a huge amount of damage to the environment. So, we are addressing this food waste on-site where it’s produced,” said William Bedell, the machine provider. The farm and cafe are part of the same business. Much of the produce for the cafe comes from the farm. And the cafe is now sending back the leftovers. The process is quick, usually taking around 15 hours per load.
Peter French, the cafe and farm owner told the reporter, “It’s become noticeable over the years how much material goes to waste — food waste in the kitchen preparation and leftovers from table is full of nutrient that we really do need on the farm to keep the soil healthy and productive for next year’s crops.”
“It just feels right to be returning that organic matter back to the land that originally produced the food. The compost that comes out is a beautiful light, fluffy material. We will be spreading this back on the land through the spring for this year’s crops. And it’s hoped that that produce will end up back on plates in the cafe soon,” said Peter French.

The idea of using games that are specifically designed to brain training is very complicated, but research published in The Cambridge University Press has found that brain games certainly make people think and use acquired skills.
Brain games sharpen certain thinking skills like short-term memory decision making, planning skills, and reaction time according to Dr. Julie Brody-Magid, clinical director of the Memory Disorders Assessment Clinic at Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital. Many of these skills decrease as people age, especially after retirement,
“Learning to use your brain in response to other forms of stimulation can help strengthen valuable mental skills, which older people continue to need and rely on every day,” Brody-Magid said. The best way to build up cognitive (认知的) reserve is to stay physically active, especially when you age, by taking care of your health by eating right and managing chronic diseases like high blood pressure, and diabetes. All of these go hand-in-hand with playing brain games.“In this way, participating in brain games actually can help with cognition, but it’s a team effort,” said Brody-Magid. “You can’t do it by doing crossword puzzles alone.”
So, if you want to mix it up and combine different types of brain boosting games, here’s a selection from Very Well Mind. Sudoku, a number placement game, relies on short-term memory and concentration. Crossword puzzles are the classic brain game that revolves around long-term memory and knowledge. You can also find them in newspapers and books. If you prefer online games, you can check out Braingle, a free site that has over 15,000 puzzles, riddles, and more. You can even create your own puzzles to get your creative juices flowing too.
