For uncounted generations, trillions of coral polyps (珊瑚虫) have lived and died, leaving behind a material called limestone. Throughout History, limestone was used to construct the Great Pyramid of Egypt, as well as many churches and castles.       1    . We can call them reefs (礁体). They can be even larger in scale than the most impressive buildings and structures made by humans.

    2

Indeed, a living coral reef is remarkable, a “city beneath the sea” filled with a rich variety of life. Most coral reefs can be found in warm, shallow oceans. They occupy just a small part of the ocean floor, but host 25 percent of all ocean life. Each reef is full of colorful fish as well as coral that forms wonderful patterns. In addition to their beauty, the reefs are an important food source for fish, and for. humans.

Threats to coral reefs

3    . For example, reefs can be damaged when the coral is taken for use in building materials or jewelry-making. Illegal fishing methods also harm reefs. These methods can help fishermen get a good catch, but their negative effects on the reefs are significant. Blast fishing involves setting off bombs in the water to kill as many fish as possible.     4     In addition, global warming has caused many reefs to become sick. A 2018 UN Report predicted that up to 99 percent of the world’s coral reefs may decline if global warming continues.

Reasons for hope

These threats to coral reefs are very serious, but there is reason to hope that they will survive. If we take steps toward coral reef conservation, it is likely that these tiny creatures — which survived natural threats for millions of years — will be able to rebuild. As conservationist Robert Richmond says, “    5    . ”

A.A diversity of life
B.A city above the sea
C.Given a chance, they can come back
D.Yet the greatest limestone structures in the world are built underwater
E.Various human activities can cause great harm to the world’s coral reefs
F.As a result, the fish became stunned, which makes them easy to collet.
G.This kills most living things nearby and causes damage to the reef’s structure

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要讲述研究发现,印度和中国正在引领全球的绿色行动。

【推荐1】India and China are leading the global greening effort, a latest NASA study said, observing that the world is a greener place than it was 20 years ago.

Data from NASA’s satellites show that human activities in China and India play an important part in this greening of the planet, thanks to tree planting and agriculture. The effect comes mostly from tree-planting programs in China and intensive agriculture (集约农业) in both countries. “China and India account for one-third of the greening,” said lead author Chi Chen of Boston University.

China alone accounts for 25 percent of the global net increase in leaf area with only 6.6 percent of global vegetated (有植被的) area. The greening in China is from forests and farmland, but in India, it is mostly from farmland with minor contribution from forests. China’s great contribution to the global greening trend comes in large part from its programs to protect and expand forests.

“When the greening of the earth was first observed, we thought it was due to a warmer, wetter climate and fertilization (施肥) from the added carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. Now with the satellite data, we see that humans are also contributing,” said Rama Nemani, a research scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center. “Once people realize there is a problem, they tend to fix it. In the 1970s and 80s in India and China, the situation about vegetation loss was not good. In the 1990s, people realized it, and today things have improved. That’s what we see in the satellite data,” added Nemani.

The land area used to grow crops is comparable in China and India, and has not changed much since the early 2000s. Yet both countries have greatly increased both their annual total green leaf area and their food production. This was achieved through multiple cropping practices, by which a field is replanted to produce another harvest several times a year. Production of grains, vegetables, fruits and more has increased by about 35% — 40% since 2000 to feed their large populations.

1. Where did the greening mainly come from in India?
A.Croplands.B.Tree planting.
C.Forests and farmland.D.A warmer and wetter climate.
2. What do Nemani’s words mainly suggest?
A.Carbon dioxide causes global warming.
B.Man can actively change the environment.
C.In India and China, vegetation loss has been solved.
D.Climate has little to do with the greening of the earth.
3. What is the main idea of the text?
A.India and China are guiding the global greening.
B.Human activities change the global climate.
C.Climate change contributes to the global greening.
D.The land area for crops in China and India has changed much.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要讲述了回收塑料产品并不能从根本上解决塑料污染问题,文章提出了相应的解决办法。

【推荐2】Plastic waste is choking our planet. People are trying to help fix it by recycling, but their efforts aren’t going far enough. Even when plastic producers are held responsible and attempt to solve the problem, it doesn’t always go smoothly. Such has been the case for the company Torus Pak, which produces novel packaging for frozen meals on a large scale.

Like mnany other black plastic products, the Torus Pak packages used a carbon-based pigment(颜料). This pigment troubles the sorting technology which is used by many recycling facilities, so black plastic usually ends up being thrown away because the machines can’t identify it. Now the company is midway through the complex process of phasing out that pigment and switching that pigment to one that doesn’t use carbon.

But that doesn’t mean the problem is solved, for the recycling rate at the waste facility it- self is not encouraging. Your discarded plastic may end up in a landfill even if you send it to be recycled. Worldwide, only about nine percent of all the plastic waste has been recycled, which amounts to less than 600 million tons out of over 6 billion. While one might assume the pro- portion of plastic being recycled is on the increase due to improved tech and increased public awareness of environmental protection, it’s actually become even lower in many places in recent years.

“The world wasn’t always flooded with single-use plastic products, ” said Lisa Ramsden, senior plastic campaigner for Greenpeace USA. “We know how to live without them. We’ve just got used to a convenience culture that relies so heavily on them. ”

The solution is obvious. To get out of this habit, we should stop using so much plastic, starting with many of the items we use just once for a few minutes. Companies need to shift toward using more refillable and reusable containers, and packaging made from materials that are less harmful to the environment. Governments must mandate(强制执行)such changes a goal we’re now finally inching closer to every day.

1. What is the problem with the Torus Pak packages?
A.They are expensive for customers.
B.Their pigment is hardly appealing.
C.They are hard to define as “recyclable”.
D.Their production process is very complex.
2. What does the author mainly stress in paragraph 3?
A.The reason for recycling plastic waste.
B.The outcome of recycling plastic waste.
C.The potential of recycling plastic waste.
D.The objective of recycling plastic waste.
3. What is advised to solve the plastic pollution in the text?
A.Advancing recycling technology.
B.Making some stricter relevant laws.
C.Setting higher environmental goals.
D.Reducing the use of plastic products.
4. Which can be the best title for the text?
A.A company contributes to recycling
B.Recycling fails to solve plastic pollution
C.Great changes happen in recycling plastic
D.Plastic pollution is increasingly worsening

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。作者通过对比一些对资源耗费较多的运动如高尔夫,和一些不怎么耗费资源的运动如power walk,旨在提倡绿色环保运动。

【推荐3】Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your choice of sport might have great influence on the environment.

Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemical and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.

There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.

Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free.

1. Which of the following does the author most probably like?
A.Doing yoga in a gym.B.Playing table tennis in a sports center.
C.Driving a motorbike on the street.D.Running around a lake.
2. How does the author prove his idea in the text?
A.By listing numbers.B.By comparison.
C.By analyzing causes.D.By quoting experts.
3. The author writes the passage to_____.
A.compare the two types of sports
B.teach us how to make sport greener
C.call on us to take up green sports
D.introduce different types of sports
