文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主要通过讲述作者及其母亲对日本作曲家Ryuichi Sakamoto音乐的喜爱,介绍了其音乐引起的矛盾的思想情感。

【推荐1】Ryuichi Sakamoto, the Japanese composer who died on March 28, 2023, was a talented musician. For many, his combination of noisy notes and joyous ones made him timeless and avant-garde (前卫的). But for me, Sakamoto was first and foremost a creator of complex emotions.

Before I learned to love Sakamoto, my mother loved him. After her days studying textiles (纺织) at a women’s college in our hometown of Nagoya, Japan, she would come home and play the Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence theme over and over. When she sat at her piano bench, she was trying to mold herself into the most attracting woman that she could be. Still, her childhood desire for a bigger life never died. Years later, when she played it again on that same piano, now transported to our Chicago home, her hands would crash down on Sakamoto’s drumming and upset bridge. It seemed that she buried herself in her younger dream and at the same time got lost in the reality of living away from her home and family. Both the joy of a fulfilled dream and the sorrow of its harsh realities mixed in Sakamoto’s score, pervading (弥漫) our living room.

Following in my mother’s footsteps, I too learned to play Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. I played it in an open music room at college, where I was quite depressed under the gaze of strangers as well as excited about becoming my own adult. I played Sakamoto again in my then-boyfriend’s grandparents’ sitting room, the piece now reflecting my struggle to see how my Japanese and American self could fit into this white family, even though I was in love.

Sakamoto’s genius for telling the contradictions (矛盾) of existence arises again and again. I’m still playing Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, now at the electric piano in my living room, as I puzzle through becoming a new mother, frightened and thrilled at the same time. Maybe someday my daughter will play Sakamoto’s music, and it will help her understand her life too.

1. The author loves Sakamoto for_________.
A.his Japanese identity
B.his talent as a composer
C.his way to combine notes
D.his creation of mixed emotions
2. How did the author’s mother feel when she played Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence in Chicago?
A.Contented with her current life.
B.Joyful and sorry at the same time
C.Annoyed with the difficult bridge
D.Lonely and upset away from home.
3. What is this passage mainly about?
A.The life and accomplishments of Ryuichi Sakamoto.
B.The challenges of being a Japanese-American woman.
C.Contradicting emotions aroused by Sakamoto’s music.
D.A mother and daughter’s shared love for playing the piano.

【推荐2】I remember exactly how I felt when I was listening to instructions on what to do in the water for my first ever whitewater rafting (漂流) trip. It was a mixture of fear and excitement—feelings I usually get before I begin a new adventure. I had been in Costa Rica for three days and one of my goals for the trip was to raft down the beautiful Pacuare River.

I think it is stories like this that lead people to tell me I have an adventurous spirit. But was this experience really adventurous? My tour guide has gone down the river many times, but the excitement was gone and he was just doing his job. Another couple I had met on the trip had been to Costa Rica six times. To them, it was just another trip.

I think a big part of any adventure is in the novelty (新鲜) of the experience. You have to break new ground and experience what you’ve never experienced before. Part of the fun of adventures lies in not knowing what the result will be. That’s not something you get from things you know really well.

The second feature of adventure is fear. Anything adventurous has a little bit of fear in it. That doesn’t necessarily mean overcoming your biggest fears. Just a little fear is all that is needed.

It doesn’t matter if the thing you’re doing has been done before by other people. If it is new to you and something you feel nervous about, it is adventurous. This is why my rafting down the river in Costa Rica was adventurous to me while to my guide, it was just another day on the job.

For me, one of the greatest things about adventure is how it affects me internally (内在地). Before an adventure you only recognize your limits; afterwards you realize that you have no limits. That’s an amazing thing to think about and something I think everyone should experience.

1. How did the author feel before the first whitewater rafting?
A.Excited but hesitant.B.Calm and hopeful.
C.Amused and relaxed.D.Excited but fearful.
2. Why did the guide and the couple feel different from the author?
A.Because the trip lost freshness to them.
B.Because they were doing their separate jobs.
C.Because they overcame their fears completely.
D.Because they didn’t like the trip actually.
3. What is partial fun of adventures from according to the third paragraph?
A.Overcoming the biggest fear.B.Knowing something well.
C.Facing the unknown result.D.Breaking one’s old ground.
4. What is the text about?
A.First experience of whitewater rafting trip.
B.Love for outdoor adventurous experience.
C.Memory of living in Costa Rica.
D.Understanding of the adventurous spirit.

【推荐3】Home gardens produce delicious food. But that’s not their main virtue.

Imagine a plate holding two strawberries, identical in appearance. One comes out of a supermarket box, meaning it is probably harvested when it is still unripe, immediately placed in a forced-air cooling unit and driven hundreds of miles. By the time it reaches the plate, it may have been off the vine for two weeks. The other strawberry is picked from a garden minutes before being eaten. The first one will probably taste sour with a light strawberry flavor. The second is likely to be sweet, and the flavor will remain in the mouth, as the smell will on the hands.

Supermarket strawberries are not entirely without advantages: they are convenient and available almost everywhere. The same could be said of cooking: affordable and decent restaurants around, so why bother to make your own meals?

That attitude misunderstands the final appeal of gardening: it mistakes the product for the purpose.

It is true that a garden, especially in the early years, can bring little but frustration. Inexperienced gardeners may plant the wrong crops for their soil. And even expert gardeners can lose a season’s harvest to uncooperative weather.

No matter.

The real joy of gardening is the time spent doing it. The deepest pleasure—as with cooking, writing, or almost anything worthwhile—is in the work itself. A gardener’s memories center not on the food produced, but on long summer afternoons with hands in the dirt, surrounded by family, if the garden is at home, or enhancing relationships with friends and neighbors in a community garden. To garden is to patiently, lovingly and diligently help life grow, in the ground and above it.

1. What do we know about the supermarket strawberry?
A.It may taste sour.B.It is cheaper than the garden one.
C.It is picked two weeks before it is ripe.D.It looks more attractive than the garden one.
2. Why might a home garden harvest little?
A.Because the soil is wet.B.Because the weather is bad.
C.Because the gardener lacks confidence.D.Because the plants grow in the wrong season.
3. Gardening is similar to cooking and writing in that __________.
A.they all encourage patienceB.they all promote friendships
C.they all need rich experienceD.they all bring joy in the process
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.The advantages of green food.B.The benefits of home gardening.
C.The trend of making food at home.D.The pleasure of watching life grow.
