As we know, many teen celebrities(名人) feel and think that having a slimmer figure can do great good to them. But, does size really matter? Are teenage fans trying hard to become like their celebrity idols(偶像)? Do celebrities really have the power to influence people, especially teenagers?
For the longest time, many parents blame teen idols for influencing the way their kids act. Have you noticed how teens idolize the celebrities these days? Even, their personal affairs are being followed by kids these days. Take for example the case of Lindsay Lohan of Mary Kate Ashley. They are definitely famous teen stars. But, since they are trying to project an image to satisfy a lot of people in show business, their health and body suffer. Many kids are aware of this problem. It is a fact that the media, and especially famous teen celebrities, can influence people powerfully. But teenagers are easily influenced because teenage years are the period when our personality and identity developments take place. Teens watching TV shows and reading magazines are easily pulled into the dieting and harmful eating habits because the media have some ways to pull these acts. 文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。文章报道了英国剑桥大学因为学生们的书写难以辨认正在考虑结束长达800年的笔试,这一举措引发了两种不同的观点。

【推荐1】A pen has always been an important tool when we are taking exams. However, in the digital age, this traditional tool may become a thing of the past. Cambridge University in Britain is considering ending 800 years of written exams and allowing students to use laptops or iPads to take exams instead. The move comes after Cambridge teachers complained (抱怨) that students’ handwriting is becoming too hard to recognize. The fall in writing clearly depends on laptops in lessons and elsewhere.

As a result, more and more students with poor handwriting are being forced to return to university during the summer holidays to read their answers aloud to their teachers. However, some criticized (批评) the move, fearing the handwritten word would become a lost art.

Tracey Trussell, a handwriting expert, asked Cambridge to “make sure that students continue to write by hand, particularly in lessons”. She told The Telegraph that writing by hand could help students improve their memory and understand lessons better.

The move also draws the attention of Harvard professor Eric Mazur. He believes that the rise of mobile Internet use means that we live in an age in which we don’t need to remember anything.

So he encourages students to bring their laptops and mobile phones into exams. With them, students can “look up whatever they want, whenever they want” and be tested on their productive skills, rather than the ability of memory.

1. Why is Cambridge University considering ending written exams?
A.Because we are already in the digital age.
B.Because students’ handwriting is too poor.
C.Because traditional tools are out of date.
D.Because writing on laptops is faster.
2. What does the underlined part in the 2nd paragraph refer to?
A.The end of written exams.B.Students’ returning to university.
C.The rise of mobile Internet use.D.Bringing mobile phones into exams.
3. What is Tracey Trussell’s attitude to students writing by hand?
A.Unfavorable.B.Uncaring.
C.Doubtful.D.Supportive.

【推荐2】Laws that would have ensured pupils from 5 to 16 to receive a full financial education got lost in the ‘wash up’. An application is calling on the next government to bring it back.
At school the children are taught to add up and subtract(减法) but, extraordinarily, are not routinely shown how to open a bank account — let alone how to manage their finances in an increasingly complex and demanding world.
Today the parenting website Mumsnet and the consumer campaigner Martin Lewis have joined forces to launch an online application to make financial education a compulsory element of the school curriculum in England. Children from 5 to 16 should be taught about everything from pocket money to pensions, they say. And that was exactly the plan preserved in the Children, Schools and Families bill that was shelved by the government in the so-called “wash-up” earlier this month — the rush to legislation before parliament was dismissed. Consumer and parent groups believe financial education has always been one of the most frustrating omissions of the curriculum.
As the Personal Finance Education Group (Pfeg) points out, the good habits of young children do not last long. Over 75% of seven- to-eleven-year-olds are savers but by the time they get to 17, over half of them are in debt to family and friends. By this age, 26% see a credit card or overdraft(透支) as a way of extending their spending power. Pfeg predicts that these young people will “find it much harder to avoid the serious unexpected dangers that have befallen many of their parents' generation unless they receive good quality financial education while at school.”
The UK has been in the worst financial recession(衰退)for generations. It does seem odd that — unless parents step in — young people are left in the dark until they are cruelly introduced to the world of debt when they turn up at university. In a recent poll of over 8,000 people, 97% supported financial education in schools, while 3% said it was a job for parents.
1. The passage is mainly about _____________.
A.how to manage school lessons
B.how to deal with the financial crisis
C.teaching young people about money
D.teaching students how to study effectively
2. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that __________.
A.the author complains about the school education
B.pupils should not be taught to add up and subtract
C.students have been taught to manage their finances
D.laws on financial education have been effectively carried out
3. The website and the consumer campaigner joined to _________.
A.instruct the pupils to donate their pocket money
B.promote the connection of schools and families
C.ask the government to dismiss the parliament
D.appeal for the curriculum of financial education
4. A poll is mentioned to ___________.
A.stress the necessity of the curriculum reform
B.show the seriousness of the financial recession
C.make the readers aware of burden of the parents
D.illustrate some people are strongly against the proposal

【推荐3】Many people go to school for a good education. They learn languages, history, maths and other lessons. School education is very important and useful. Yet no one can learn everything from school. No matter how much a teacher knows, he cannot teach his students everything they want to know. His work is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves.

It is always more important to know how to study by oneself. It is quite easy to learn something in a language or a formula in maths, but it is difficult to use a formula in finding the answer to a maths problem. Great inventors do not get everything from school but they can invent many things and change the world a lot. Though Thomas Edison invented many things he didn’t have much school education. How do they do all these? Because they know how to study. A lot of things are not taught in the classroom. They get knowledge from books outside school. They work hard all their lives, and the most important thing is that they know how to use their head.
