Are you stuck in a job you don’t like? Many people hold ideas about jobs and careers that are holding them back. Let’s see the truth behind some career myths.
ACV (简历) is the only way to get a job.
To tell the truth, many employers don’t like or actually read CVs. Some employers would prefer to judge a person after a face-to-face meeting, or give them some part-time work first to see what they are truly like in the workplace.
Having an up-to-date CV is important when applying for jobs advertised in the paper, from larger organizations, or when you want to leave some information about yourself for the employers.
I have to make my decision now and stick to it.
There is a great saying: “Life is a journey not a destination.” Journeys are full of options. You make and change your decisions all the time based on new experiences and information.
Yes, you do have to make decisions, but you do not have to be limited by those career decisions by sticking to them. What’s more important is having a go and exploring new things.
I can’t get into the work I like because there are too few opportunities.
I have no doubt getting into work that you really want to do can be challenging. But I do also believe opportunities exist in most career areas because employment needs change all the time. One strategy I’d suggest if you can’t get your dream job is to go after what you want and grab any opportunity that moves you toward your dream job.
It’s the school’s responsibility to talk about careers and work.
Schools do have a part to play in providing career advice for students, but others also have a responsibility. I would suggest that a student-parent-school partnership approach is a far better way of looking at this. A lot of information is available on the internet, in the newspapers, through relatives and friends.

Remember everybody else in your year is in the same boat. They may not realize it,but they're just as nervous as you are.Moving to senior high is an opportunity, not a problem.Things are different and all you need to do is be polite and learn the new rules.
Teachers are ready to help!
If you're unsure what to do or are worried about anything then you had better ask for help.Teachers are probably the best people to turn to as they're experienced in helping new students. Some senior high schools also have a “friends system”.If your school has this, then you will be paired with an older student. They will look out for you and help you if you have any problems or questions.
All change
There are lots of differences between junior high school and senior high school. You’ll have a homework diary or a student planner. You will have your lessons with different teachers in different rooms. You will have homework for different subjects on different days,so make sure you get organized.Make sure you have a copy of your school timetable written down so you know which rooms your classes are in and on which days you will have your different subjects.
Other points
If you've got an older brother or sister at the school then ask them for advice.
Be yourself! It sounds simple, but people will know you much better if you just act naturally.

Teasing should also be a two-way street.
Teasing about a disappointing grade should only be used as a gentle reminder to study or do homework. It shouldn't be focused on the ability because that could make the situation worse. It’s not wrong to say to your child, “I'm disappointed that you got a C.”
From monsters under the bed to darkness and noises, fears that may seem silly to an adult may be very real to a child.
A.Kids often feel hurt when teased by others. |
B.Topics like appearance and weight are prohibited. |
C.You have to be willing to let your child tease you about things. |
D.But then you must work with them to figure out the cause. |
E.But parents need to recognize when teasing becomes hurtful. |
F.Laughing or teasing won't help them overcome their fears. |

Factors like the colors of your walls, how you store your food, or whether your bedroom is comfortable enough can all contribute to your eating habits. In short, your house may be making you fat. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.
Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less selfconscious (难为情) when they’re in poorly lit places—and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.
Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.
Don’t forget the clock—or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories (卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.
Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake (摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.

Dariush Mozaffarian, a heart doctor at Tufts University in Massachusetts worries people who are in poor metabolic health are at increased risk of getting heart disease and other serious health problems. “When you have nine out of 10 adults being metabolically unhealthy, largely due to diet-related illnesses, you know we have a broken system,” Mozaffarian said.
A big part of the problem is that Americans eat a lot of junk foods. Junk foods are processed foods like sweets or potato chips that provide little nutritional (营养的) value but are high in fat, salt and sugar. Junk foods are hard to resist because they contain things the body wants and needs. Linda Bartoshuk, a professor of food science at the University of Florida believes the problem is that the body has a hard time knowing when to stop wanting them. “We take in too much salt, sugar and fat, which produces all kinds of illnesses,” Bartoshuk said.
Mozaffarian is among health experts who are calling for more policies to help Americans eat healthier foods. He would like to see the government improve nutrition in existing foor programs, like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Meals on Wheels SNAP provides economic aid to poor families to buy food, and Meals on Wheels delivers meals to older Americans
Mozaffarian also thinks food nutrition should be included in the health care system. There could be more nutritional education for health care workers, and students in medical school. While Mozaffarian believes nutritional education would be effective, changing Americans diet is more important. “We need to fix the food so that parents and kids who are busy and out wanting to enjoy their lives can get nutritious, affordable food,” he said.
1. What does Mozaffarian think is the main reason for more serious health problems?A.The government system. | B.The quantity of food. |

Daydreaming may be good for creativity
Mind—wandering has been associated with creativity for centuries. A study found that people who mind—wandered performed better on their task, the answer coming to them in a flash.
When people’s minds wander in ways that seem meaningful to them, they tend to have more creative ideas and feel more inspired at the end of the day, too. Interestingly, this is true for both writers and everyday people.
Now, findings from a 2021 study suggest that mind—wandering can actually improve your mood. In this study, the researchers found that when people’s thoughts were off—task, they generally felt more negative. But if their thoughts were free—moving. It had the opposite effect, helping people feel happier.
Can we be better mind—wanderers?
Researchers warn that mind—wandering when you need to be focused on a task could cause problems. So, let your mind wander when you’re doing tasks that don’t require focus.
So, just having more control over when mind—wandering happens and the kind of thoughts that you have would be very useful.

We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly my mother will push the conversation into the Third World War. She’ll talk about my lack of (缺乏) bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, I don’t want to do any job related to science, either. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major (主修) in English, she nearly had a heart attack.
“Why can’t you be like my co-worker’s son?” she shouts all the time. Her co-worker’s son received a four-year scholarship and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don’t know what to say except that I simply can’t be like Mr. Perfect as I’ve called the unnamed co-worker’s son. I can’t be like him. I am the type of the person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve something because of loving it, not because of fame or salary.
I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I’ve seen my mother struggle to raise me on her small salary and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 am and usually comes back home around 5:00 pm or even 6:00 pm.
However, I want her to know that by becoming a doctor, it doesn’t mean I’ll be successful. I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future.
