Everybody in David’s class packed their bags and got ready     1     (go) home last Saturday. Usually David’s mother would fetch him home but that day she was not there, so he walked home by himself.

When he reached home, he knocked on the door as he didn’t bring his keys.     2     (surprising), no one answered the door. He     3     (knock) again when one of his neighbors     4     (name) John called him. He told David his mother was out and invited him to stay in his house till his mother came back. David knew that if his mother     5     (be) at home, she would have answered the door soon. So David went to John’s house and played with him.     6     (stay) in John’s house for a few     7     (hour), David saw his mother come back. They thanked John and his family. It turned out that David’s mother had     8     serious backache so she had to see the doctor.

    9     this experience, David has learnt that neighbors are people     10     help each other. The relationships among neighbors are like building a bridge and they will build a good bridge one day.

I like to share a story that happened a few days ago. I live in Germany and at that time of the year,     1     (dark) sets around 5 pm. It is cold, the     2     (street) are often wet and everyone likes to get home or to a warm place as     3     (quick) as possible.

This was the setting of that early evening. I was walking the sidewalk     4     saw a lovely animal, a bunny(兔子). My first thought was joy. “Oh! Bunny! Sweet!” The next: “Mind     5     (you) own business!” The following was “How can I be     6     help?” and “Who lost the bunny?”

Then I remembered that a woman with a carriage had just passed. I picked     7     bunny up, called to the woman, and showed it to her. She turned around, wondering, checked the carriage with her     8     (sleep) child in, and came back with a sunny smile. “Thank you so much! You saved my evening!” There was so much joy in her face. It makes me happy still to this day.

And it was only possible because I     9     (teach) to be kind enough     10     (see) the bunny and encouraged to care.

Li Daiyu and her cousin Liu Qian went to Canada to visit their cousins in Halifax on the Atlantic coast. They flew to Vancouver and then took the train. One of the first stops was in Edmonton,     1     center of Canada’s huge oil and gas     2     (drill)industry. After another day on the train, eventually they were back in the city of Winnipeg. From there, they travelled through the night. It was not until 9:30 am.     3     they finally reached the capital of Ontario, Toronto. All in all, their trip from Vancouver to Toronto had taken a duration of four days.

After college I wanted to make a difference in the world, so I became a volunteer teacher and     1     (send) to Namibia. Honestly my first choice wasn’t Africa, but I am extremely grateful that I had the chance. So with a group of     2     (equal) eager young graduates, I went on my journey.

Schools were quite bare, and the students     3     (have) tiring days, walking miles to get to school, often barefoot. With their mountains     4     work at home, few     5     (possession) and little opportunity, these children were joyful, which I admired.

This was my first time     6     (live) abroad in a different culture and simply getting used to the living conditions     7     (be) big adjustment. I had no electricity, running water, phone or the Internet. Imagine no air-conditioning at a place     8     the temperature often goes beyond 38 degrees Celsius! Some days it was just too hot to move.

However, I could end each day with a     9     (glory) African sunset. And at night, I had a light-pollution-free view of the entire Milky Way. Before Namibia, I never thought I would survive in such an environment. My experience awakened me to not only the limitations     10     (place) on ourselves, but also our amazing ability to adapt. Stepping out of your comfort zone in another culture will certainly make your life worthwhile.
