Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table, reading his book. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to copy him in every way he could.
One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa, I try to read the book just like you, but I don’t understand it, and I forget what I understand as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the book do?”
The grandpa quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, “Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.”
The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandpa laughed and said, “You’ll have to move a little faster next time,” and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned. Out of breath, he told his grandpa that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, so he went to get a bucket instead. The grandpa said, “I don’t want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You’re just not trying hard enough.” The boy again dipped the basket into the river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandpa the basket was empty again. Out of breath, he said, “Grandpa, it’s useless!”
“So, you think it is useless?” the grandpa said, “Look at the basket.”
The boy looked at the basket and for the first time he realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket and was now clean.
“Grandson, that’s what happens when you read the book. You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you’ll be changed, inside and out.”

As some friends were deeply lost in the world of yoga and mindfulness, I’ve personally struggled with the feeling of failure, not on the yoga mat, but on the road to my entrepreneurship(创业). It all began several years ago when I threw myself into the business, driven by my passion and a dream.
In the early days, optimism flowed freely, but financial struggles and sleepless nights soon followed. I questioned my decision and felt like the biggest failure. However, every difficulty became a stepping stone towards growth. I learned more from my failures than from my successes, adapting and growing stronger with each obstacle. I reached out to instructors, friends and family, sought advice and slowly saw a ray of hope. One defining moment came when I gained my first long-term coaching partnership. It was a breakthrough, and my hard work paid off. Over the years, I faced many more failures, but I refused to let them define me.
Today, looking back at my journey, I realize that moments of feeling like a failure were essential to my success. They taught me humility, perseverance and the value of hard work. They shaped me into a successful entrepreneur I am today—someone who doesn’t fear failure but embraces it as a necessary part of the path to success. As we approach the end of the year of graduation, remember that success is not about avoiding failure, but about how we rise after we fall. Let’s support each other on this journey called life. Stay positive, stay inspired and stay true to ourselves.

After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself, “I wonder why that woman doesn’t wash her window. It really looks terrible.”
One bright morning I decided to clean my flat, including washing the window on the inside.Late in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was clearly visible. Her window was clean!
Then it dawned on me. I had been criticizing her dirty window, but all the time I was watching hers through my own dirty window. That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings?
Since then, whenever I wanted to judge someone, I asked myself first, “Am I looking at him through my own dirty window?” I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see the world about me more clearly.

We talked about reaching for the stars and pushing through when the going gets tough. Some goals are easy to reach while others remain a challenge.
Twelve-year-old Marcus explained that we should think about how far we have come when a goal is hard to reach. He may be only twelve, but he has gained the knowledge of the ages at a young age. We then entered into a discussion about how we can help one another. Ask proper questions and children will amaze you with the depth of their knowledge and experience.
Dr. Wayne Dyer authored several books for children. I used one of his books as a key point of discussion for the class. We picked out key words that could be introduced to children and to teens. The words were goals, determination, devotion and perseverance. Class activities centered around these words that would produce hope and success in their lives.
Our culture does little to encourage these traits. Children are fascinated by electronics, digital devices, and electronic means of communication which do not encourage the development of delayed gratification. It was heartening to be able to talk about these traits in a Sunday school situation. At age seventy-three, I became the student and they were the teachers. What a joy!
It gives me a lot of pleasure to help young people push through difficulties on their way of gaining knowledge. These are skills that will help them find success and hope. Young people are our future. It pays to invest in them.

These people believe that magic circumstances distract people from real life and struggles we should be concentrating on overcoming. Although I enjoy reading such books, I used to think so, and that I was escaping real life while I read, since people said that was what I was doing. Now, I no longer believe that I escape through fantasy. Instead I believe that I am having an experience much more profound.
I have always loved fantasy (especially J. R. R. Tolkien and J. k. Rowling) and read extensively in this genre, but I used to think of this reading as downtime, less important than more “serious”, realistic reading. Over time, I realized that the conversations I was having about these fantasies were deeper and more insightful than those about books set in my time and with similar problems to ray own. I looked up to those heroic characters for inspirations when dealing with new and perplexing questions. Many of these books were shared with my family, and created a sense of belonging and acceptance as we discussed Aslan’s sacrifice and argued over whether or not Frodo was a failure. Even we didn’t agree, these conversations united us through shared thoughts and experience. When I married, my wife, my children and I read Lioyd Alexander’s Chronicles of Prydain on our honeymoon, rejoicing and mourning together through Taran’s Journey from Assistant pig-keeper to High king.
Then I began my graduate studies in Marriage and Family Therapy, and I wanted to enrich others’ lives with this experience I found so personally rewarding. I first assigned a couple to read a fantasy novel, which the couple did read. Just reading the book together, discussing it and wondering together why I had asked them to read it, led to recovery and a renewed romantic relationship. I discovered that the farther from reality the book could take the reader, the more effect it appeared to have. I have been using this technique for years and haven’t yet seen it fail in my practice. As evidence I have many people who have been unified and healed through the reading of these fantasy novels.
1. What did the author use to think of reading fantasy novels.A.Fantasy reading had a profound effect on the author’s life. |
B.Reading fantasy novels made us avoid the problems that we should have overcome. |
C.The author just thought highly of reading fantasy novels. |
D.Fantasy reading was rewarding and more significant than realistic reading |
A.Research | B.Healing |
C.Check | D.Relationship |
A.Fantasy reading offered inspirations to tackle puzzling questions. |
B.Fantasy reading united the family members and created a cozy family atmosphere. |
C.Fantasy reading helps to heal. |
D.Fantasy reading arouses imagination. |

The athlete skillfully managed the monster earlier this year, at the first World Surf League (WSL) Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge in Praia do Norte, Portugal, which was the same site where she established her 2018 world record by riding a 68-foot wave.
“Although I say I’m not a competitive person, I was very excited and braver than I usually am on this day,” said Maya. “When I let go of the rope, I had a feeling that this was probably the biggest wave I’d ever ridden.” It turned out that Maya’s 73.5-foot monster was two feet higher than that of her competitor’s wave, earning her WSL’s 2020 women’s XXL Biggest Wave Award. It was also 3.5 feet higher than the 70-foot wave ridden by the 2020 men’s XXL Biggest Wave Award winner Kai Lenny!
The 33-year old believes her achievement may be a turning point in the understanding of the ability of women surfers. “Our sport is very male dominated, with the performances on the male side often much stronger than ours as females,” she told The Atlantic. So Maya’s success opens the idea that there are other possibilities.
Though Maya seemed to effortlessly ride over the monster surf, it has not all been smooth sailing. Her first attempt at pursuing the world’s biggest waves in 2013 could have ended the career of someone with less determination. The surfer suffered a deadly wipeout that broke her ankle and almost killed her. However, the “minor” difficulty did not remove her love for the extreme sport and her desire to be one of the world’s greatest surfers!

B.She had a burning desire to win. |

Her father talked with her about how she could have an impact on the kids that came to her classroom every year if she stayed. He also told her she could come back, get a college education and have a much broader, systemic impact. That conversation convinced Parfit to return and concentrate on mechanical engineering at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
She loved math classes, computer science classes and physics classes, as what all of those subjects have in common is finding ways of dealing with problems, and that’s been the theme that runs throughout her career. She loved addressing tricky problems, breaking them down into their component pieces, and dealing with them one at a time.
Parfit combined that love and the method to build a career settling some of the most pressing challenges in education. She’s a partner at Education Resource Strategies (ERS), a Massachusetts-based nonprofit that helps U.S. school districts promote fairness in education and improved outcomes for all of their students—especially those with the greatest learning needs and those being furthest from the educational opportunity. “I’m so glad I can apply the skills I built in the field of education,” she said.
Parfit doesn’t stop here. She teamed up with local businesses to offer internships (实习岗位) to high school students, and engaged with community partners who can offer enrichment activities. “For so long, schools have been a place where one teacher faces a fixed number of kids,” Parfit said. “Schools and systems were set up as if all students needed the same things. We’re trying to cooperate with communities to broaden available resources to create learning experiences beyond a classroom that unlock every child’s potential.”
1. What did Parfit do after her gap year in South Africa?A.She majored in education. | B.She stayed there to teach. |
C.She sought higher education. | D.She bonded with her father. |
A.It made her a partner of ERS. | B.It enabled her to start a business. |
C.It gave access to professional courses. | D.It developed her problem-solving techniques. |

She was brought up in a very conservative family, and yet she rejected the conservative values of her family to pursue a career in painting. Her rebelliousness created a series of conflicts with her family, which led to a nervous breakdown at age 23.
Fortunately, painting offered her an effective treatment and a way to develop as an artist. Her famous “Nana” series gained universal praise. It is evidence to the glory of women. The series is mostly composed of life-size dolls(娃娃) of women in various roles such as brides and new mothers. Some of these sculptures are very big so that men would look small next to them. She used vivid colors in these works and her female subjects dance cheerfully and merrily. Through these joyful and powerful images of Nana, the artist sends a positive message to all women.
Saint Phalle’s sculptural park, “The Tarot Garden,” inspired by Tarot cards, is situated in the Italian province of Tuscany. Work on the garden began in 1979, and it was officially opened to the public in May, 1998. The park contains sculptures of the symbols found on Tarot cards. The brightly colored combinations of buildings and sculptures reflect the special qualities represented by the 22 main tarot cards. The sculptures, however, have nothing to do with fortune telling. Instead, the works focus on the elements of life experience, personality, and self-knowledge that the cards refer to.
