After spending far too much time on apps and social media over the last few years, I decided it was time for a change. I'd started to get really frustrated with how I was spending my spare time. One day, when I realized I'd checked my phone over 100 times, I knew something had to give.
So, I deleted my social media apps from my phone and made a promise to myself to do something more positive with my time.
I'm embarrassed to admit that I'd stopped reading as much over the last couple of years. At first, it wasn't easy for me to find things to do. But then a friend sent a magazine Readly to me. I'd always loved reading magazines and thought it was time to give them a go again.
The selection of Readly is amazing: food, fitness, lifestyle, sports, culture and hobbies are all covered. I've been reading it in the evenings to relax instead of watching TV. I've also found it great for inspiration and ideas for new recipes(食谱)in the food section. I have been on a diet to lose some weight, so the fitness section has been really helpful, too. Having so many meaningful things to read is just fantastic. I can't think how much I would have had to spend to get all that content.

An Unforgettable Thanksgiving Day
“Mom, is it okay if I invite a few of the classmates for Thanksgiving?” asked my son Evan. Evan had been senior high school students for two years. The school he attends is a challenging school and is strict with students but Evan did well and he had changed a lot. We were very grateful that our son had learned not only to tidy up, but to shine everything. Most importantly, he became more outgoing.
But with all the strict rules and hard work, the students there were also forming lifelong friendships. It was a practice that those unable to go home for the holidays would find a welcoming place at the table in the home of any of their friends. We’d hosted Evan’s roommates last year and looked forward to meeting new guests this Thanksgiving.
“Oh, one thing, Mom,” Evan continued. “These guys are exchange students. They would be Tim from Thailand, Kanok and Patrick from Mexico and Costel from Canada. They couldn’t eat their traditional dishes at school. So you’d better cook some special dishes for them. I know you are good at cuisine(烹饪). ”
Indeed, I did delicious dishes and I was very excited about the international dishes we’d have at our dinner table. What dishes would I cook for these special visitors? They’d probably love a traditional turkey. But ... what are their traditional dishes? I love to cook, so this was an excuse to take out my wide variety of cook books, to do a little research on the favorite foods of these three faraway lands.
I decided to roast a turkey, and found several traditional dishes of Mexico and Canada. The only traditional dish of Thailand I thought I could have a try was something called foufou. I told Evan about it, who checked in with his friend Tim. “Tim is crazy about foufou, Mom! You have to make it! Tim also said he could help you if you needed. ”
So Turkey Day morning found me busy in the kitchen. The last dish I cooked was foufou. I followed the steps to prepare foufou and finally placed it on the stove(火炉)to cook for ten minutes.

Marcus sat by his window, looking at the blinking lights on other buildings. He thought of Papa, who was visiting Marcus’ sick grandpa in Jamaica. “I’ll try to help Mama while you’re gone,” Marcus had promised his father.
His little brother, Peter, sat beside him and asked when they could get their Christmas tree so that he could decorate it with Mama’s Jamaican straw birds. Mama walked up and told them they couldn’t get a tree this year; she explained there were too many bills because of grandpa’s disease and that they couldn’t afford one.
Someone knocked on their apartment door suddenly, and Marcus hurried to the door, only to see it was his friend Jack. He let him in, and Jack look around, “No tree yet? I set an artificial tree a week ago. It’s up to the ceiling (天花板). Just two more days till Christmas! I guess you’re not getting a tree.” Marcus walked slowly to his room and shook his piggy bank (存钱罐). Seven dollars and some dimes (十分硬币) fell out - his trips from helping at the market. He thought he could earn enough in two days to buy a tree and surprise Mama and Peter.
The next day, he stayed busy pushing carts to help shoppers. By the time he left, six more dollars jingled in his pocket. “My lucky day,” he thought. Thirteen dollars should buy a small tree. He whistled all the way to the store. But even the smallest trees were $15 or more. “Tomorrow will be busy with shoppers,” he thought. He was determined to earn those extra dollars.
The telephone rang early the next morning. Mama came into his room and said, “I need to go out today, Marcus. I’ll need you to take care of Peter for a day.” Marcus anxiously said it would be the busiest day at Mr. Smith’s market and he had to be there. “I’m so sorry. There’s nothing else we can do.” Mama gave Marcus a hug, promised to come early and headed for work.
