Pop idols are celebrities who burn brighter than regular stars. If a star is someone you can recognize on the street, an idol is someone who will cause a stir at a public appearance.
Without fans, an idol is just an ordinary person, like you and me. As Reese Witherspoon once said while announcing the Oscar for best make-up, movie stars look just like people in documentaries(纪录片) if you see them without make-up.
I was once invited to a private party where about half of the guests were stars and the other half entertainment reporters. Guess what? The good-looking ones were the reporters because they tend to be young, and they glow without make-up.
Some idols are born; some are made. Most idols are created by a machine called the entertainment industry. They may have some charms and talent, but not enough to become famous. They are the raw material out of which a star, or even an idol, is made. An army of behind-the-scenes assistants will hype(炒作) or even make up their virtues and hide their shortcomings.
Paris Hilton is the kind of star who possesses no real talent but yet is quite well-known. This is the result of endless hype. If you are thrust into the limelight often enough, you can become a celebrity without having any talent.
Television contest shows create a much fairer more transparent platform where young people can compete and showcase their talent. The soap opera is another platform for idol making. These drama
series are long, giving an actor much needed exposure. The actors and actresses are always well-lit, made up and beautifully dressed. Now all they need is some good dialogue from the scriptwriter(编 剧).
1. Which of the following statements agrees with the writer’s viewpoint?
A.Most idols are born.
B.The entertainment industry is more popular.
C.Many stars are often good looking
D.Pop idols are not as pretty as you think.
2. Why does the writer use the example of Paris Hilton?
A.To show that hype is an important element in making a star.
B.To indicate that Paris Hilton is very famous.
C.To prove a star often lacks talent.
D.To show a star is popular because of the acting skills.
3. What does the writer think of the television contest show?
A.More practical.B.More formal.C.More equal.D.More competitive.

【推荐1】“Do you like my dress?” She asked of a passing stranger. "My mommy made it just for me." She said with a tear in her eye.

"Well, I think it's very pretty, so, why are you crying?"

With a tremble in her voice the little girl answered. "After mommy made me this dress, she had to go away."

"Well, now," said the lady, "with a little girl like you waiting for her, I'm sure she'll be right back."

"No Ma'am, you don't understand," said the child through her tears, "my daddy said she's up in heaven now with Grandfather."

The woman realized what the child meant, and why she was crying. Kneeling down she gently gathered the child into her arms and together they cried for the mommy that was gone. As the woman intended to go, the little girl grabbed her sleeve, pointing to a spot on her dress, saying, "Here is where my mommy kissed my dress, and here," pointing to another spot, "and here is another kiss, and here, and here. Mommy said that she put all those kisses on my dress so that I would have her kisses whenever I cry."

Then the lady realized that she wasn't just looking at a dress, she was looking at a mother who knew that she was going away and would not be there to kiss away the hurts that she knew her daughter would get. 文章大意:本文为一篇记叙文。讲述了Chris Hadfield是如何实现成为一名宇航员的梦想。

【推荐2】Growing up, Chris Hadfield spent every summer at his family’s cottage (小屋) on Stag Island in southern Ontario. Like just about everyone else on the island, the Hadfields didn’t have a television set, so late in the evening of 20 July 1969, Chris and his family went to a neighbour’s cottage to watch the Apollo 11 landing on TV. When he saw Neil Armstrog step onto the surface of the Moon , Chris’s life changed forever. He knew he wanted to be an astronaut (宇航员) too.

Twenty-three years after that summer night on Stag Island, Chris’s dream came true: the newly formed Canadian Space Agency chose him to be an astronaut.

Since then , he has orbited (围绕……运动) the Earth thousands of times on three separate missions. Most recently, Chris was in Space for nearly five months, from December 2012 to May 2013, when he served as the first Canadian Commander of the International Space Station ( ISS ).

Today, Chris travels the world teaching people about Space, sharing the beautiful photographs he took and playing the songs he recorded on the space station. 【推荐3】From a young age, Michael Platt loved two things: the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and cupcakes. He imagined ways he too could fight for justice. He memorized figures about income inequality and childhood hunger. But he also spent afternoons at his home computer, amazed by YouTube bakers who made perfect cupcakes.

When his parents gave him a pair of Toms shoes for Christmas three years ago, Michael saw a way to connect his twin passions. At age 11, he founded a bakery that operates on the Toms one-for-one model: For every cupcake, cake or cookie that Michael sells, he donates another to the homeless and hungry. Twice a month, he heads to locations to pass out goodies. Michael, now 13, said he especially enjoys handing out cupcakes to kids.

“I know I like cupcakes, but also cupcakes are part of a child’s childhood so they should get them,” said Michael, noting that he always eats one with whippedicing (打发的糖霜) on his birthday.

Michael calls his baking business Michaels Desserts. He left out the apostrophe (撇号) as a reminder that he is baking for others, not himself. “I always wanted to have a purpose for what I do.” he said. “It’s all about helping people--- not just having a purpose for yourself, but thinking about, ‘How does this touch other things? ”

When he started the bakery, he knew that he wanted his business to do more than make money. That’s why the intention of Michaels Desserts is fighting hunger and giving back, which Michael accomplishes through his giveaways. Michael hopes his cupcakes inspire others to work for social equality.

Sometimes, Michael admits, he grows tired of being in the kitchen. Then he remembers the homeless boy he met once while handing out cupcakes. A couple of days afterward, the boy’s father messaged Michael on Facebook to say that his son, encouraged by Michael’s example, now desired to become a baker.

“That inspired me,” Michael said. He smiled and looked down.

1. What inspired Michael’s method of helping the poor?
A.His admiration for Martin Luther King.

C.A bakery that runs on a one-for-one model.
D.A baking program he watched on YouTube.

A.To attract more consumers.

3. What does Michaels Desserts intend to do?

4. Which of the following best describes Michael?
