At long last, Stefano Boeri Architects’ brilliant Bosco Verticale towers are finally completed. The “world’s first vertical forest” consists of a fantastic pair of costly towers that add nearly 2.5 acres of lush vegetation to the sky line of Milan, a city notorious (声名狼藉的) for its air pollution.
The Bosco Verticale mixed-use towers are constructed with a $2.5 billion public-private investment as part of the re-development of Milan’s Porta Nuova district. The towers, measuring 260 feet and 367 feet, house 800 trees between 9 and 30 feet tall, over 4,000 shrubs (灌木) and 15,000 ground cover plants. Bosco Verticale is created with LEED Gold Certification (绿色建筑黄金认证) in mind.
The buildings shrub have welcomed their first residents.
The superstructure is also selected for the world famous International Highrise Building Award as one of the five most beautiful and original high-rises in the world that is completed.

For example, you and the rest of your family are heading up to the mall for hours. Your teenage daughter Laura has shown resistance to being seen with you in public recently, so you decide not to persuade her to come with you. This seems like a very respectful thing to do that takes into account her feelings and opinions, but when you return she is upset. What went wrong? Well, many things could have gone wrong while you were away. She could have been caught up in friend drama, boy drama, or any other kinds of drama. Or she could be feeling hurt. Maybe she really didn’t want to go to the mall with you, but maybe you should have at least talked with her about it. Even knowing that you wanted to spend time around her probably would have felt good.
Some people say that this is an unreasonable expectation for parents to be “enabling” their kids to demand constant attention and validation (确认). I say, spending 30 extra seconds to make sure your children know you care about them is only “enabling” them to have a part of the self-worth they are so lacking at this time in their lives.
Expecting them to be removed and emotionally distant from you only re-enforces the idea that they should be. Always give them the choice to be an independent teen or your baby girl. When they need a break from the high school soap opera, you will both be glad you didn’t close that door.

As John Medina writes in Brain Rules, “This need for explanation is so powerful that some scientists describe it as a drive, just as hunger and thirst are drives.” Great learners preserve this childhood drive, or regain it through the application of self-talk. Instead of focusing on initial disinterest in a new subject, they learn to ask themselves “curious questions” about it and follow those questions up with actions. John Medina has found that people can increase their willingness to deal with necessary tasks by changing their self-talk from “This is boring” to “I wonder if I could...?”.
You can employ this strategy in your working life when you feel you have to learn something yet you lack the drive to do so. All you need do is find just one thing about a “boring” topic that sparks your curiosity.
I recently worked with a lawyer whose firm had offered her a more significant job that required knowledge of employment law—an area she regarded as “the most boring aspect of the legal profession”. Rather than trying to persuade her otherwise, I asked her what she was curious about and why. “Swing dancing,” she said. “I’m fascinated by the history of it and wonder how it developed—it’s such a happy art form.” I explained that her “curious language” could be applied to employment law. “I wonder how anyone could find it interesting?” she said jokingly. I told her that was actually an OK place too start. She began thinking about possible answers (“Maybe some lawyers see it as a way to protect both their employees and their companies...”) Soon she was intrigued enough and over the following months she learned what she needed to know for that aspect of her new role.

But that means it contains around 90% non-sugar — the material known as bagasse (甘蔗渣) which remains once the sugar-bearing juice has been squeezed out of the cane. World production of cane sugar was 185m tonnes in 2017. That results in a lot of bagasse.
At the moment, most of this is burned. Often, it fuels local generators, so it is not wasted. But Zhu Hongli, a mechanical engineer at Northeastern University in Boston thinks it can be put to better use. "With a bit of improvement bagasse makes an excellent replacement for the plastic used for disposable food containers such as coffee cups," says Dr. Zhu.
Dr. Zhu is not the first person to have this idea. But previous attempts tended not to survive contact with liquids. She thought she could overcome that by combining the bagasse pulp (浆状物) with another biodegradable (可生物降解的) material. She discovered that the main reason past efforts failed is that bagasse is composed of short fibres which are unable to give resilience (韧性) to the finished product. She therefore sought to insert a suitably long-fibred substance.
Bamboo seemed to fit the bill. It grows quickly, degrades readily and has appropriately long fibres. When the researchers mixed a small amount of bamboo pulp into bagasse, they found that the short and long fibres combined with each other closely.
To put their new material through its paces, Dr. Zhu and her colleagues fist poured hot oil onto it and found that their invention showed resistance to oil. They also found that when they made a cup out of the stuff and filled it with water heated almost to the boiling point, the cup remained good for more than two hours. Though this is not as long as a plastic cup would last it is long enough for all practical purposes. Moreover, the new material is twice as strong as the plastic used to make cups, and is definitely biodegradable. When Dr. Zhu buried a cup made out of it in the ground, half of it rotted away within two months.

So is there a way to save the permafrost? One team of researchers thinks it may have found a possible solution: big animals and herbivores (食草动物).
Back 1996, researchers started an experiment called Pleistocene Park. They fenced about eight square miles of land in northeast Siberia. And then they introduced different types herbivores: horses, sheep and other large creatures. Since then, scientists have studied these animals effects on the ecosystem. One outcome is that these large herbivores help keep the ground very cold-cooler than it would otherwise be.
“The snow in winter is important to soil temperature, because it acts as an insulating layer (隔绝层). So the air in winter, at the high altitudes, is much colder than the soil,” Philipp Porada, ecologist at the University of Hamburg said. So the idea of this experiment was to introduce large herbivores to quantify their effects on soil temperature and see if they can actually protect permafrost soils against melting. And this works because the animals’ trampling (踩踏) leads to less insulation of the soil against cold air temperatures and results in a cooling effect.
Porada and his colleagues realized the significance of this effect, so they pulled data from Pleistocene Park to model what effect herbivores could have on permafrost if they lived in large numbers in the Arctic.
Porada said, “These herbivores in the model reduce soil temperature greatly, by 1.7 grees on average. And this leads a preservation of around 80 percent of today s permafrost area. And without the herbivore effect in the model, we found that only 50 percent of the permafrost area would remain by the year 2100.”

The grain actually got its name from the seabirds that nested in the trees around the ponds used to supply water to the rice fields. Their droppings (粪), rich in nitrogen (氮) and phosphorus (磷), were washed into the water and eventually went to the rice fields.
The phenomenon that Lyons encountered is not a new one. What is new is that scientists have now calculated an exact value for seabird droppings. Given that 30 percent of the species of seabirds are endangered, researchers published a study that estimates the annual value of seabirds. “I see that people just care about something when it brings benefits and when they can see the benefits,” says Daniel Plazas-Jiménez, a seabird researcher.
To show the benefits seabirds provide, scientists set out to put a price tag on the animals’ droppings. The estimated value of seabird droppings as an organic fertilizer (肥料) against the cost of replacing it with human-made chemical fertilizers was around $474 million. The scientists then estimated that 10% of the profits coming from coral reefs depend on seabird nutrients. According to the United Nations, the annual economic returns of commercial fisheries on coral reefs are about $6.5 billion. So, 10% of this value is around $650 million per year.
The richness of seabird droppings in South America, particularly on the Chincha Islands has been documented for centuries. People there were the first to recognize seabirds’ agricultural benefits. At one point, an estimated 60 million birds built 150-foot-high mounds (堆) of droppings. However, only an estimated 4 million seabirds now live on the Chincha Islands. This loss is part of a global trend.
By the early 1840s, seabird droppings became a full-blown industry; they were commercially mined, transported and sold. The industry crashed around 1880 and reappeared in the early 20th century. Today, interest in seabird droppings is resurgent as consumer demand for organic agriculture and food processing has risen. However, the decline of seabird populations caused by human activities and global warming is absolutely a terrible shock to some areas’ economy.
