A heated debate is currently going on in our town.Should we allow the cinema to be constructed in the Havenswood Shopping Center? There is just one large lot left to build on,and the theater would use up all of that space. Some people are excited at the idea of finally having our own movie theater.Others would rather travel ten miles to the nearest theater to keep our quiet town the way it is.They say it is enough to have Marvin’s Movie Video Rentals. After all,Marvin’s store keeps thousands of the latest videos.
There are certainly benefits to renting videos. For one thing, you can plan your own schedule when it is convenient for you.You can relax on your sofa, and take a break whenever you need one.You can also talk to others without bothering any strangers seated nearby. In additional,it is a less expensive way to view a movie compared to going to a theater.
On the other hand, seeing a movie in a theater is an experience all its own.First, you can see the movie on wide screen as the filmmaker intended. To be viewed on a television screen,a film must be changed in some way to make it smaller. One is the “pan-and-scan” method, which involves removing some of the details in the picture. The other way, called “letterboxing”,keeps the image the way it is on the big screen, with one annoying exception; because the big-screen version is wide, the same picture on a television screen must be long and narrow.
Another problem is sound. The sound from a television cannot compare to the sound system in a theater.Your experience of a movie improves when you can clearly hear all of the sounds.Furthermore,at home, viewing companions often talk during a movie, which makes you miss out on what’s happening in the film.
Besides, having a movie theater will not mean that you can’t still go to Marvin’s! You will just have a choice that you didn’t have before.Isn’t it time for Havenswood residents to enjoy a little progress?

Back then, the running craze hadn’t quite heated up to the point it has today and running a marathon was unknown to most people. Besides, I never knew anyone who had actually run a marathon.
On the way from England to Dublin, I was wondering what I was getting myself in two days later when the race would begin. I tried to get some sleep to ease my nerves, but I found it hard.
The race day was somewhat cloudy, but the warmth of the people forced away the clouds. My limited memories from that first race remain: the feeling of running through a tunnel (隧道) of people as the crowds lined beside the streets; the cheers from the crowds as the news came that an Irishman had won the race; what’s important, the unbelievable kindness of the crowds cheering me on as I hit the wall and tried to struggle through. Eventually, I didn’t get the prize, but I never gave up and regarded it as a success because I challenged myself.
After my first marathon, I started a website based on my love for running. Whether you’re an experienced marathoner or just an interested passer-by, I invite you to participate in the website and make it your home. Runners and particularly marathoners seem to share common ideals. They’re part of a global team and a global community.

As an international student who had not been back to China for three years, I knew that it would take me some time to readjust to the life in China. However, I did not expect that I wouldn’t even be able to do things as simple as taking the subway.
I still remember asking my cousin if I could borrow his metro card. He looked at me with such astonishment and then started laughing: “No one uses a metro card now. You have your phone!” He then explained to me which application I needed to download and how to connect it with WeChat pay.
I was so dumbfounded by how convenient payment had become in China. When I had just come back, I still had the habit of carrying some cash with me when I went out. But soon, I realized that there was no place for me to use it. Even the smallest convenience stores support Alipay or WeChat pay. Online transactions (交易) and mobile payments have become the new norm.
Mobile payment is so common for people in China that they are used to it by now. But for me, it has been new and exciting.
Back in Vancouver, there was no way of going to the mall or supermarket without carrying cash, a debit card (借记卡) or a credit card. Mobile payment in Canada is not as prevalent (流行的) as it is in China. Personally, I have never paid using my phone during my stay in Canada. I had to carry cash around everywhere. Contrary to that, I have not used cash to pay at all since I arrived back in China.
Now I am getting used to the concept of mobile payment. Gradually, I stopped asking the vendors (小贩) if I could use WeChat pay and just showed them my payment code. Thinking back on my experience with this “new” method of paying over the past few months, I have to admit that our lives have indeed become much more convenient with the presence of mobile payment.

I called back. I told my mom to go without me and that I already created my gift. I sent the photo of the cream colored flower to my computer and typed the poem on top of it. As I was arranging the details another poem came to mind .The poem was written by Edgar Allan Poe;my dad recited it as much as he did the other. I typed that out as well and searched online for a background to the words of it. The poem was focused around dreaming, and after searching I found the perfect picture. The image was painted with blues and greens and purples, twisting together to create the theme and wonder of a dream. As I watched both poems passing through the printer, the white paper coloring with words that shaped my childhood. I felt that this was a gift that my father would truly appreciate.
Christmas soon arrived. The minute I saw the look on my dad's face as he unwrapped those swirling black letters carefully placed in a cheap frame,I knew I had given the perfect gift.

Now that we have jobs to do, food to buy and cook and other errands(差事) to run, even I sometimes think it would be a welcome change to have to sit down and quietly read and write with no distractions. But, in case you don’t remember - homework is pretty much every child’s least favorite thing to do. In the age of Netflix, Snapchat and wifi, the distractions are almost endless. It can sometimes almost be too hard to even keep up with all the new tech advances our kids are using, so how can we make sure that those advances take a back seat to our children’s education? Here are some ideas.
There’s no point in stopping the reality that young people are going to focus on their phones and tablets instead of other things at times. Your best way is to accept, actually the tech sector continues to be the most profitable and fast-growing industries and that’s unlikely to change fast. There are ways to use technology to help your kid do homework. Ask your teacher and school staff what apps and websites they’re using to teach lessons and supplements(补充) them with at-home activities as well.
Even though technology has changed, the basics haven’t. If you want to read, write and think properly, you need to have peace and quiet and the ability to focus, right? Well, your kids are just the same.Try and find a space in your home to enable your kids to do work away from televisions, the Internet or other distractions. Let me be clear: this shouldn’t be a prison.I feel like I’m my most productive working alone in an office or at a busy cafe with my headphones on. Getting lost in other realities helps my creativity grow. Placing kids in isolation(独处) can often have a harmful effect and doesn’t always equal being more productive.
I feel like “getting engaged( 参 与 )” is always a big part of my advice for parents on just about everything. How can you make sure your children are being successful if you have no idea what they’re doing? How can you be sure they’re doing it right if you don’t know what is the correct answer? What do they need? You should be in touch with their teachers, have a sense of where the lessons are going, what kinds of tasks are being given and what success looks like in the classroom.
Knowing all of that is key to your child’s success, especially when matched with some encouraging praise and helpful tips on how he can keep going. Thinking about how your child is best motivated(激励) by other things and using those methods here reasonably isn’t a bad idea.
And if by chance you’re having trouble solving that Math problems or understanding a sentence, don’t fear – you’re not alone. Use the school staff, other parents or friends as your support. Better to seek help than do nothing.
We all know that homework isn’t exactly the most entertaining way anyone spends their time. And sometimes we can’t help but feel that since we left school, we’re done with homework forever. But the circle of life plays out in all times and it’s up to us to make sure that we pass on the lessons we’ve picked up and that while homework might seem dull, it’s how we build skills, learn real lessons and get on the road to greatness. That greatness is on the inside, it’s up to us as adults to enable the young people to bring it out. The key to achieving greatness is to take a lifelong learning.
1. What is the author’s attitude towards new tech?A.It affects parents’ everyday life. |
B.It should be kept out of children’s reach. |
C.It can benefit student’s education. |
D.It makes homework easier. |

B.Parents should know what motivates their children best. |
C.Students should do their homework independently. |

B.needn’t make sure that their children are being successful |
C.can teach their children by themselves |
D.should know as much as possible about it |

In the more than 4 million years that humanity' s ancestors have been u-sing only two legs for walking, our ability to walk upright has allowed humankind to travel great distances and survive changing climates, environments and landscapes.
But walking is more than just transportation. It also happens to be really good for us. Countless scientific studies have found that this simple act can provide a number of health benefits and help people live longer. In fact, a walking routine-if done properly-might be the only exercise people need.
How much walking should one aim for? You’ve likely heard we need 10,000 steps a day. That’s about 5 miles. But contrary to popular belief, this recommendation doesn’t come from science. Instead, it stems from a 1960s advertising campaign to promote a pedometer(计步器)in Japan. Perhaps because it's a round number and easy to remember, it stuck.
Since the 1960s, researchers have studied the 10,000 - steps - a - day standard and have turned up mixed results. Although 10,000 steps is certainly a healthy and worthwhile goal, it’s not a one - size - fits - all recommendation.
For instance, a recent Harvard University study involving more than 16,000 senior women found that those who got at least 4,400 steps a day greatly reduced their risk of dying early when compared with less active women. The study also noted that these benefits continued up to 7, 500 steps before leveling off. This 7,500 mark isn't surprising: It’s in line with common public health recommendations, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate (适度的) physical activity a week for adults.
Research has shown that picking up the pace might be a good idea, too-fast enough to raise your heart rate, even if just for a short burst.

The machine has a long robotic arm attached to a base with wheels. It can perform some of the same medical examination tasks as doctors. Cameras record the robot’s activities, which are controlled remotely so doctors can avoid coming in close contact with infected patients. Doctors and other medical workers can operate the machine from a nearby room, or from much farther away.
The robot’s main designer is Zheng Gangtie, an engineer and professor at Tsinghua University. He told a news agency that he got the idea for the device around the time of the Lunar New Year in January, when the COVID-19 virus was spreading quickly.
Zheng said a friend of his is the head of Beijing’s Tsinghua Changgung Hospital. He said his friend told him that one of the biggest problems in dealing with COVID-19 was that healthcare workers treating patients were getting infected themselves. Zheng said he wanted to do something to help this situation.
So the engineer gathered a team and went to work on the robotic device. The team was able to convert(转换) two robotic arms. The devices use the same technology that is used for space equipment. The new robot is almost completely automated and perform the most dangerous tasks. However, some doctors said that it would be better not to build such robots to be fully automatic. This is because many patients still desire a personal presence to help calm them during treatment.
The plan is to use the robot to help treat coronavirus patients, along with assistance from nurses and other hospital workers. Zheng said he would like to build more of the robots and does not plan to make any profit from the design, but hopes that a company can begin that process.

The multiple Oscar-winning US Civil War movie released in 1939 remains one of the highest-rated movies of all time, but its description of satisfied slaves and heroic slaveholders has led to criticism.
“Gone With The Wind is a product of its time and shows some of the racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been very common in American society.” an HBO Max spokesperson said in a statement.
“These racist descriptions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and criticism of those descriptions would be irresponsible."
Protests have spread like wildfire across the US since the killing of African American George Floyd while in police custody(拘留), with calls growing for police reform and the broader removal of symbols of a racist legacy, including monuments to the slave-holding Confederacy.
Floyd died last month as a white Minneapolis officer pressed a knee into his neck for almost nine minutes. The officer has been charged with second- degree murder.
12 Years A Slave writer John Ridley said in a Los Angeles Times said Monday that Gone with the Wind must be removed as it “doesn't just fall short with regard to representation" but ignores the horrors of slavery and keeps “some of the most painful stereotypes(刻板印象) of people of color.”
The film will return to the recently launched streaming platform at a later date, along with a discussion of its historical background, the company said.
No edits will be made,“because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed."
“If we are to create a more just, equal and inclusive future, we must first acknowledge and understand our history.”

【推荐2】We have a real crisis in this country in the basic understanding of science. It affects our global competitiveness as a country, our national security, and the effectiveness of our social system. The misunderstanding about science is blinding our eyes.
We know that an awful lot of teachers who are teaching science today have not been properly empowered to do so. School frequently isn’t testing whether you understand something but whether you’re familiar with it. What’s Newton’s second law? You say F=ma, and you get an A. That does not reflect a deep understanding of Newtonian mechanics. Science education is not just a body of facts; it’s a process. To present it with appeal and excitement you need to picture it as a detective story—asking questions, making observations, and collecting evidence. You test and you fail but, you know, failure can lead to discovery.
Another challenge we face is that science is often viewed as too hard, for experts only. But I don’t actually think it’s that difficult. People see science every day. They look outside and see weather and nature. They push a button in their house and the lights go on. Everybody’s dealing with science every day. They just don’t call it that. And it’s important they do. In fact, science is determining the quality and outcomes of their life.
Science needs creativity. And one of the best ways to be creative is to think “out of the box”. However, we need more courage when we come to practice. Take me for example. Very early in my teens I decided to educate myself. That’s why I quit school early and risked everything to start a company. I risked everything I had because I had nothing to lose. I’d rather fail at trying to do something really big than succeed at being medium.
“When’s the right age to think creatively?” you may ask. I’d say in the womb (子宫)! Kids don’t have anxieties about trying to avoid failure. They are full of imagination and much more willing to fail. Just watch a 3-year-old. They touch everything, and if it hurts they don’t touch it again. They learn everything at a breathtaking rate. Start to think out of the box as early as you can, because it’s more likely to take you to places that you can’t predict, schedule and budget for. Do all that when you can bear the insecurity.

I'm having trouble in my life. The grades of No 1 student in our college are even lower than that of mine. To my surprise, I have no reward (奖学金). It discourages me. I'm having doubts about myself. I always want to find out if someone else is better than me, but I can't. It's unfair. I can't accept the fact.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours Frustrated
Dear Frustrated,
Thank you for writing to me. I' m sorry that you are having troubles because of what your college did. Is it possible that you are worrying too much? Perhaps you could use your energy to fix your attention on your studies and forget about the grades that your fellow students are getting. My suggestion would be to try to gain as much as you can and leave it at that! It can be wasteful to use your energy complaining about your college or what other students are doing.
I do not mean to lecture you, but I find that it's human's nature to see what others are doing and compare ourselves with them. You know sometimes, this will bring much unhappiness.
From your letter I can tell that you are young and smart, and that you are getting good grades. This is great. But if other students are getting good grades as well, fine, wish them good fortune and go back to your studies. Try it!
Best wishes.
Bob
