And according to reports by Chinese college libraries, the most popular books among Chinese students are novels like Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils by Chinese author Jin Yong.
This is considered by many to be one of the reasons why Chinese students are sometimes not as good at critical thinking or observing global perspectives (视野) as US students—they read too many bestseller novels.
“By reading texts in history/social studies, science, and other subjects, students build a foundation of knowledge in these fields that will also give them the background to be better readers in all areas,” Robert Pondiscio, vice president of the Core Knowledge Foundation in the US told The Washington Post.
According to China Youth.Daily, there are usually five stages when it comes to reading, with popular novels at the bottom. More advanced readers normally go on to read classic fictional literature, history and philosophy, or books with critical ideas.
We spend hours, days or even weeks on a book, so it’s only natural that we want to learn something useful in return for our efforts. Many see reading as an investment (投资) in themselves. But this practical view of literature and the thought that history and philosophy books are superior to novels are not agreed by everyone. After all, what they offer are two different kinds of satisfaction. While the former provides knowledge, the latter brings emotional experiences. “Fiction and poetry are medicines,” UK writer Jeanette Winterson once wrote. “What they heal is the rupture (裂痕) reality makes on the imagination.”

This desire to surround kids with books isn't just in my head.A recent study has demonstrated that children who grow up with home libraries perform better later in life when it comes to literacy(读写能力),applying math skills to everyday life and learning how to use digital technology.Reading is a gift that keeps on giving, apparently.
The study collected data from 160,000 adults from across 31 countries who participated in the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies(PIAAC).The PIAAC measures adults'skills in three categories:literacy, numeracy(计算能力)and digital literacy.
Participants in the PIAAC were asked to estimate how many books were in their households by the time they were 16 years old.The average number in the study was 115 books, but the actual numbers would vary from country to country.Turkish participants averaged 27,while those in Norway had 212 and kids in the UK had 143.The study found that the more books that were present in the home, the better the adults scored in the PIAAC evaluations.
Homes needed to have roughly 80 books to have any impact on the teens, raising PIAAC scores to the average level.Literacy scores in particular improved when more books were available, though they became steady at around 350 books.Numeracy skills improved in similar ways to literacy.Solving problems with digital technologies also saw improvement, but the score gains weren't as steep as they were for literacy or numeracy.
Access to books also helped to bridge education differences. Those who grew up without many books in the home and received university degrees performed roughly the same as those who had access to large home libraries and only completed nine years of school.

To change this situation, a group of IT professionals and engineers have come together to start the 'Let's Read India' movement in Maharashtra by taking their library to the people's doorstep.
Prafulla Wankhede, one of the founders of the campaign, says it's getting an overwhelming response. "Our primary objective is to bring this WhatsApp and social media generation back to books and make them better educated and more civilized citizens," he said.
Wankhede said their library van went to remote places lacking major facilities. "We want to reach out to every person who wants to read a book. We have three mobile libraries now. People can borrow books for a week for free with only one condition: the borrower should submit a 300 -word review about the book to be able to take a second book," he said. "Our objective is to ensure people read."
"Those who want to get books can connect through our social media website and app. This will enable them to know the locations of the mobile library that has GPS attached. Besides, there is a QR code for each book. The mobile library makes the weekly visit to the identified locations," Wankhede said.
Initially, “Let's Read India” Foundation had planned to start the initiative in Maharashtra, Goa and Madhya Pradesh, the plan was shelved because of the pandemic situation. "We are now focusing on Maharashtra," said Wankhede. "Once we grow in Maharashtra, we'll then shift our focus to the rest of the country." The foundation also plans to start a YouTube channel where well-known authors' speeches, interviews and reviews will be played.
"We not only offer books, we also suggest what should be read. Many people are really confused about their reading choices. If they are able to read the kind of books they want, it will help them in their academic and professional life," said Wankhede.

Their names might not be especially well-known today, but in the 1970s and ‘80s, French scientists Katia Krafft and Maurice Krafft were very famous for their photographs and writings about the volcanoes. When they died in 1991 on Mount Unzen in Japan, their deaths were covered globally. But their story has somewhat faded in the public memory in the past three decades? though Werner Herzog did spotlight them in his 2016 documentary Into the Inferno.
The Kraffts? who first bonded over Mount Etna and Mount Stromboli and were married in 1970, witnessed about 140 eruptions on every continent except Antarctica and won an Emmy for their National Geographic documentary Mountains of Fire. They would famously drop everything to get to an active volcano, and were often the first on site. They were also known for their willingness to get dangerously close.
Filmmaker Sara Dosa once met the Kraffts while making an earlier film about Iceland many years ago. In 2020, with the help of Image’ Est, a French museum, and Maurice Krafft’s brother, Bertrand Krafft, Dosa and her team were able to get access to over 180 hours of footage shot by the Kraffts. So Dosa decided to make something about the Kraffts in the true spirit of the Kraffts.
“We wanted to let them play themselves. We see them as the authors of their own story,“ Dosa said. ”This is a co-creation, shot by them and starring them. We’re just stringing together the pieces of their life for the audience to connect with.”
However, Fire of Love is anything but a filmed Wikipedia(维基百科)page. Dosa and her team have drawn on the techniques of French New Wave films to help shape the style of their film, including playful multiple screens.
1. Where did Katia Krafft and Maurice Krafft pass away?A.On Mount Etna. | B.On Mount Stromboli. |

Arthur Curry, the human-born heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, goes on a quest to prevent a war between the worlds of ocean and land. And the main power from the Trident(三叉戟) makes him the true protector of the deep in the end.
The movie opens with how Arthur's mother, Queen Atlanna of Atlantis, and his father, lighthouse keeper Tom Curry, met, fell in love, and had a son named Arthur. When the Atlantians come calling, wanting their queen to return and fulfill her part of an arranged marriage, she goes back to Atlantis in order to protect her husband and young son. That boy grows up to be a man with special strength, speed and power. Arthur Curry, half human and half from Atlantis, then goes on a trip of a lifetime. Not only does this adventure make him come to terms with his real identity, but it also forces him to discover whether he is entirely worthy of meeting his own destiny: becoming a king.
This is a big movie, in every sense-big action, big sets and big drama. The special effects are extraordinary, given that much of the action takes place underwater or, at least, has to look like it does. The downside is that the movie starts to feel a bit boring by the second hour. Yes, the movie has elements of other successful fantasy dramas, like the Star Trek movies, Jurassic Park and Romancing Stone, but movies of this nature are somewhat similar these days. In the Marvel or DC universes, with so many heroes and villains(反派角色), it's hard to be entirely fresh but Aquaman has done a pretty good job.

Marble (弹珠游戏) Circuit
With brightly colored pieces and a seemingly simple layout, Marble Circuit doesn’t present as a tough logic game—but don’t underestimate (低估) its difficulty. After drawing a challenge card, players must arrange pieces and fill in holes on the game board to allow the right number of marbles to run through the channels and into each box at the bottom of the board. Because it requires more patience and abstract, special thinking skills than some other kinds of logic puzzles, Marble Circuit is recommended for the over-8 crowd. (Mind Ware, $ 24. 95)
Botzees
Kids can follow directions or use their imaginations to build a robot out of the 130 blocks, and then command it to dance, sing, drum and light up with the companion app on a smart device (设备) or tablet.
