Causes of sandstorms
In desert areas, sandstorms are most commonly caused by either thunderstorm outflows, or by strong pressure gradients(气压梯度)which cause an increase in wind speed over a wide area. In some cases, dust and sand may set a limit to a shallow depth by a low-lying temperature change.
Sand storms have also been shown to increase the spread of disease across the globe. Virus in the dust is blown into the atmosphere by the storms. Some diseases may not be urgent at the very beginning, but they can develop into deadly ones if left untreated.
Sandstorms cause soil loss from the dry lands, doing harm to agriculture. Sandstorms also reduce visibility, affecting airplanes and road transportation.
Dust can also have good effects. Central and South American rainforests get most of their mineral nutrients from the Sahara; iron-poor ocean regions get iron.

Over the years, online tools and applications have been developed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of disaster aid and relief. Here are some widely used ones.
Micromappers
Micromappers was launched in 2013 and used in the 2015 Nepal earthquake, Typhoon Hayian in 2013 and several other disasters. The application creates a map from social media relief updates and sends it to aid organizations so that they get real-time information about disaster- stricken areas. It helps aid agencies to effectively plan rescue efforts before going into disaster zones. During the 2015 Nepal earthquake, Micromappers processed more than 60,000 images.
Google Finder
Google Finder is another new piece of technology which can help with disaster relief efforts. It was developed in 2010 in response to the Haiti earthquake. It is an open source web application, which is available in over 40 languages. The application allows users to post and search for the status of people affected by a disaster. During the 2015 Nepal earthquake, well over 7,500 records on the online tool were searched.

Put a smoke alarm(警报器)in the house. Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to go off. The alarm makes a loud sound. The sound tells everyone to leave the house at once.
Make escape(逃脱) plans. They should know all the ways out of the house. If there is a fire, everyone follows the plan to get out. Part of the plan is to check all the windows to make sure they can be opened easily.
Buy fire extinguishers(灭火器). Everyone in the family should know how to use them.
Practice for a fire. Everyone in the family should know the following fire safety rules:
1. Don’t open a hot door! The fire can grow more quickly if you open the door.
2. Stay close to the floor! Smoke can be more dangerous than fire; the best air is near the floor because smoke rises.
3. What will you do if your hair or clothes start to burn? First, stop! The fire burns faster if you run. Second, drop! Fall to the floor. Then roll! Turning over and over will make the fire go out. Put a blanket around you to keep air away from the fire that may still be on you.
