Children who spend more time reading with their parents have a greater chance of becoming better readers than those who don’t. With the help from their parents, children can learn techniques to improve their reading skills.
“A lot of parents think after their child learns to read, they should stop reading to them,” Donna George said. “They are sadly mistaken.”
George offers her services to parents at the Title I Learning Centers. She said reading aloud to children may be the most valuable thing parents can do. “It is better for children to hear things at a higher level than where they are,” George said. “Parents are their child’s first teacher.” Parents help their children build listening, phonics, comprehension and vocabulary skills when they read aloud to them.
Before parents can identify reading problems, they should escape the enemy —television and limit the time their children spend watching television. George suggested not allowing kids to have a TV in their bedrooms, setting a schedule of when kids can watch or keeping a list of how many programs children watch. Louise Joines said while her 14-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son enjoy reading, the television sometimes becomes a distraction. So she tries to build the situation by suggesting books the entire family will enjoy reading together, like the Harry Potter series.
Parents who do not read themselves should not count on their children being interested in it. If parents would read to their children at least 15 minutes every day, children would not have so many problems in school. It is the parents’ job to help build that desire in their children, and of course to know what kind of books to read is also important.

Two weeks after stopping our bedtime readings, though, my older daughter asked whether we could start again.
Reading aloud to children improves a young mind’s cognitive development (thinking, problem-solving, decision-making) and reduces behavior problems, research shows. As with playing board games, reading to them increases concentration and attention spans.
And yet, too many of us stop before the kids want us to.
The conversations children have around themes and ideas in books help them make sense of the world. And it’s a joyful way to connect and be close with your kid. While reading in bed, my daughters and I lie next to each other, sometimes leaning into one another.
A.She simply enjoyed the practice too much to let it go yet. |

Some adults and parents view adolescence as a period of friction, change and problems. For you, it’s a time of concern about acne(粉刺), weight problems, late or early development, or school pressures and so on.
It’s easy to understand why many find this a difficult time. But once it’s over, you realize that most of your parents’ “irritating” behavior was caused by feelings of love and concern. Yes, adolescence can be a suffering time. But how to make this period will less suffering and find more fun. Here are a few tips:
◆Be honest with your feelings.Your parents are a great resource of support and knowledge, but they don’t know what’s going on in your life if you don’t tell them.
◆ If your parents upset you by setting a curfew(宵禁)or by grounding you, don’t immediately take the defensive side. If you start yelling or crying, you won’t be able to express your important feelings. Make sure you talk to your parents when you’re not emotionally upset.
◆Calmly tell your parents what’s on your mind. Try not to use “you” statements like, “You don’t give me enough freedom” or “You’re never happy with anything I do.” These types of criticizing statements will only cause more conflict(冲突).Instead use “I” statements such as “When I go out with my friends, your early curfew makes me feel as if you don’t trust me,” or “Sometimes I feel hurt when you don’t give me credit for being responsible.”
◆Listen to what your parents have to say.If they say something you disagree with ,don’t immediately overreact(反应过度).Give them a chance to express their feelings and then calmly explain why you may disagree with them.If you’re getting a chance to express yourself, it’s only fair to give the same opportunity to your parents.

These aren’t normal bikes. If the futuristic appearance doesn’t give them away, the specs (规格) will: Okapi’s bikes have an all-electric range of up to 40 miles and a top speed of around 30 mph. Those aren’t crazy numbers, but they are more than adequate for an ordinary bike. The company’s selling its bikes for just under $3,000. That’s in line with other e-bikes’ pricing, but Okapi’s bikes look more appealing than the others, which try (with varying degrees of success) to look like normal bicycles.
The bikes’ full suspension, hidden storage, and 1,000-watt motor all add up to a fun ride. Okapi’s design appears to be stronger and more able to handle the bumps (碰撞) than many other electric bikes, some of which appear to be modeled after old models. The main downside to Okapi’s design is that it supports a maximum of 280 pounds, which may stop some riders enjoying the bike.
Okapi’s approach to the e-bike is a little different from others’. While more than one company tries to hide their electric powertrain (动力系统) underneath slim bodywork, Okapi puts it all out for the world to see in a big, square battery pack. There’s almost a futuristic dirt bike look to the bike, which is less awkward than it sounds.
Electric bikes are getting cheaper, almost every day, but Okapi’s product charges a high price: The Starter Edition bike costs $2,989.98. The good news is that Okapi’s bike looks better and stronger than many offerings on the market today.
Though they’re not the most mainstream product out there, e-bikes are worth the coin at almost any price. If you’re considering buying an electric bike, do it. E-bikes absolutely offer you an enjoyable and exciting experience, even on the cheaper end.
