To help the environment, many Americans have made the change from paper and plastic bags to reusable grocery bags. But a report by a Florida newspaper says that reusable grocery bags sold by some supermarkets contain high levels of lead(铅). Lead is a metal that can be harmful to humans, especially young children, Now, Senator Charles Schumer is asking the US government to investigate(调查) the use of lead in reusable shopping bags.
“When our families go to the grocery store looking for safe and healthy foods to feed their kids, the last thing they should have to worry about is poisonous bags.” Schumer said, “A quick investigation will allow everyone to make informed, timely decisions.”   Schumer added.
Lead in the bags is not likely to rub off (因摩擦而粘在……上面)on food. But over time, paint on the bags can chip and the bags can wear out. When this happens, lead can be released(释放).
The Tampa Tribune newspaper said certain bags sold at Publix and Winn-Dixie supermarkets had lead levels that were a concern to health officials. The affected bags were found in Florida. But Publix has more than 1,000 stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Sough Carolina and Tennessee. Publix says that all of its bags are under current laws about lead content, but that they have asked the makers of the bags to reduce the lead levels in the product.
The bags with the highest levels of lead had fancy designs and many pictures. Plain reusable bags without decoration were found to contain little lead. Consumers worried about lead levels in reusable bags can change to cloth or string bags. Paper bags are also a good choice, since paper can be recycled(回收).
Since 2007, Publix supermarkets have sold more than 13 million reusable bags. The store says because shoppers have made the change to reusable bags, it has saved more than 1 billion paper and plastics bags.
1. The shopping bags containing high levels of lead ______.
A.have been reported by a newspaper
B.have been stopped by the government
C.have stopped people from using reusable bags
D.have caused serious health damage to customers
2. From Schumer’s words we can learn that ______.
A.reusable bags do little harm to kids’ health
B.people have shown much concern for the reusable bags
C.people will be informed of the facts about the reusable bags
D.people should refuse to buy things from supermarkets
3. It can be inferred from the text that Publix might believe that the bags they sold are ______.
A.dependableB.convenientC.harmfulD.popular
4. Customers are advised to choose bags ______.
A.with colorful designsB.with fancy pictures
C.made of plasticD.made of paper
5. From the last paragraph we know that the use of reusable bags has ______.
A.caused Publix a lot of troubleB.saved Publix much money
C.cost Publix plenty of moneyD.been proved a wrong decision

【推荐1】Help Hermit Crabs

Hermit crabs are nature’s recyclers. They eat waste and help keep oceans and shores clean. Unlike other crabs, the hermit crab has a thin outer shell over its soft tail. This makes the hermit crab easy prey for hungry predators. Hermit crabs stay safe by living in old seashells. A hermit crab is picky; it tries on many shells until it finds one that fits just right. In recent years, however, many hermit crabs have had trouble finding their perfect homes. What is the problems There are not enough shells to go around!

One reason for the seashell shortage is that ocean water is not as clean as it once was. This has caused chemical changes to sea water. Some sea animals, like snails, are affected by these changes. Now there are fewer snails making shells. People visiting the beach often take shells home as souvenirs. This is another problem. Other people even take shells for their own pet hermit crabs! They do not realize that hermit crabs in the wild need those shells too.

Now people are working to solve this hermit crab housing shortage. They are teaching beach-Boers to leave seashells where they belong — at the seashore! Some people even make fake seashells that they hope the hermit crabs will like. For example, a group called Project Shelter invited people who visited their website to create different designs for hermit crab shells.

These designers had a lot to consider. What kind of material should be used to build a seashells. The material must be light enough for the hermit crab to carry, but strong enough to protect the crab from predators. The man-made shells could not contain glue or any other substance that might harm a hermit crab. Another challenge with building a hermit crab home was the opening to the shell. Too big would mean the crab would not feel safe. Too small would be uncomfortable, and the crab would not want to move in.

The Project Shelter shells are placed in the wild for hermit crabs to find. Lucky hermit crabs can move into these new dream homes.

2】Conservation scientist Kim Williams Guillen was wracking her brain to come up with a way to save endangered sea turtles from egg poachers: If she placed a fake egg containing a GPS tracker in the sea turtles’ nests, she might be able to track the thieves.

Williams Guillen found a flexible plastic material to mimic the shell of real eggs. She and colleagues then used a 3D printer to produce the fakes. Finally, they put the smallest GPS tracking devices inside each. Then comes a fake about the same size, weight, and texture of a green sea turtle egg. The researchers then went to four Costa Rican beaches, where green sea turtles come ashore to make their nests. As mothers laid their eggs, the researchers slipped a single spy egg into each nest. Once the fakes are covered in sand and mucus from the real eggs, it's very difficult to tell the difference between the two.

Of the 101 fake eggs, 25 were taken by thieves. The farthest moving egg traveled 137 kilometers inland. The fake egg sent its final signal the next day from a residential property, suggesting that the research team had tracked the eggs through “all of the players in the entire chain”.

By understanding that chain, Williams Guillen says researchers can identify trading hot spots. She emphasizes that the tracker is not a way to catch local thieves, many of them living in poverty, but a tool to better understand their routes.Learning local trading hot spots could help them and eventually law enforcement-identify larger players in the chain.

In the meantime, Williams Guillen and her colleagues are working to get their eggs to other sea turtle conservation organizations. Ultimately, though, scientists and nonprofits need to engage communities with local outreach and education programs to save sea turtles. “The real meat and potatoes of conservation isn't going to come from fake eggs,” she says.

1. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
A.Where sea turtles often lay eggs.B.Why sea turtles become endangered.
C.How fake eggs were made and employed.D.How the idea of fake eggs came into being.
2. Why did researchers track the eggs?
A.To test whether the fake eggs really work.B.To better understand sea turtles’ activities.
C.To gain some data for research on turtle eggs.D.To find the trading routes and people involved.

【推荐3】Reducing plastic waste isn't easy because the cheap material is found in almost every household item. Now a delicious and nutritious solution has come up to help reduce our dependence on this environmental hazard(危害).

David Christian, the co-founder of Evoware, says the idea of creating the biodegradable (生物降解的)products came from concern at the country's high pollution rate. Indonesia is home to four of the world's worst polluted river. Since single-use packaging is a large contributor to the problem, Evoware decided to deal with that first.

After investigating various materials, the company settled on seaweed. Unlike corn, commonly used for biodegradable containers, seaweed does not require resources like water or large amounts of space. Since Indonesian farmers already harvest more seaweed than they can sell, it's easy for the company to find the material.

Though they will not reveal their production process, Evoware says the seaweed packaging contains no chemicals and is safe to consume. The company has also invented single-use cups, which can break down 30 days after they're thrown away.

While replacing plastic with the seaweed products may seem appealing to most of us, it is a hard-sell in Indonesia. According to Christian, The awareness to reduce single-use plastic is still very low. This makes our bioplastic unnecessary.” Also a factor is the cost, which is higher than using plastic. Hopefully, Evoware will succeed in convincing Indonesians and people worldwide that switching to their products will be helpful to protecting our beautiful planet.

1. What problem did Evoware decide to deal with first?
A.Ways to clean the four worst polluted rivers.
B.How to deal with single-use packaging.
C.Means to contribute to the country’s economy.
D.What nutritious materials for people to use.
2. Why did Evoware choose seaweed?
A.It could be found everywhere in his country.
B.It was most commonly used for packaging.
C.It didn't require much space and was easy to get.
D.It grew thickly in most of the polluted rivers.
3. What can we infer from Christian's words?
A.Sometimes it's hard to get people to reduce the use of plastics.
B.Their seaweed products have won government support.
C.Their new products have received worldwide popularity.
D.The cost of making seaweed products will be lowered soon.
