文章大意:本文主要介绍了打哈欠的原因。

Yawning (打哈欠) is something we all do — maybe because we’re bored carrying out boring tasks or because we’re tired. Sometimes, just seeing other people yawn can set you off.

According to BBC, new research suggests it might because yawning cools the brain down and prevents it from overheating, much like the fan in your computer. This might be why we are thirstier for sleeping and yawning in warm temperatures.

We yawn more when we’re tired and ready for a short sleep, and we can’t control when we do it! But it’s also true that yawning is a very contagious behavior. John Drury, a researcher, told BBC that, “It’s something that you can’t stop. Dogs yawn when their owners yawn, and animals yawn to each other. It happens whether you want to or not.”

His research into this behavior showed that there is a connection with our social group and how close we are to the people in it. If we are closely connected with the person who has the behavior, we are likely to copy it, too.

Another research showed similar results. They asked volunteers to watch other people yawn. They found that they hardly avoided yawning when others around them yawned. They also found, when using electrical stimulation (刺激), they were able to increase people’s wish to yawn. These findings could be useful because they could help treat other conditions like Tourette’s (图雷特氏综合症).

6. How will we feel in warm temperatures according to BBC?
A.Comfortable.B.Sleepy.C.Active.
7. What does the underlined word “contagious” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.有好处的B.容易的C.传染的
8. We are likely to yawn when we are ________.
A.a little bit cold
B.asked to carry out hard tasks
C.closely connected with person who yawns
9. Why could these findings be useful?
A.Because they could help people stop yawning.
B.Because they could be used to treat some diseases.
C.Because they could prevent people from catching a cold.
10. The purpose of writing this text is probably to ________.
A.show the reason for yawning
B.discuss the process of yawning
C.introduce the advantages of yawning

文章大意:本文介绍了各种交通工具的优缺点,着重介绍了无人驾驶汽车,但是目前,人们的接受度还是比较低的,希望未来无人驾驶汽车能够得到人们的认可。

Imagine someone who lives in Atlanta needs to travel to Washington D.C. for business. This is about a 10-hour drive. A flight takes about two hours. Add to that the drive to the airport, checking in and waiting at the gate. After arriving in D.C., it may take another 30 minutes to pick up your baggage (行李) and find a car—and even more time to drive to the destination (目的地). The total travel time could be four to five hours. That’s why most people would choose to fly instead of driving themselves.

However, if they could have a driverless car take them there, the choice may be different. Passengers could eat, drink, work and sleep during the 10-hour drive. They could leave whenever they want, and pack whatever they want. When they get to D.C., they don’t have to find a rental car and drive to the place by themselves. And imagine the driverless car even has a bed. So, what would you choose?

As we all know, people love how quickly flights can be but hate the security checks, delays (延迟) and the risk of losing baggage. Most people don’t like to ride in driverless cars at the moment. However, it’s said that as people learn about the advantages of driverless cars, they will become more accepting of the new technology. Over time, people will feel comfortable using self-driving cars.

In our study, we showed people trips of different lengths (长度) and asked them to choose whether they would rather drive themselves, take a flight, or ride in a self-driving car. On short trips, with a five-hour drive, two-thirds of people would rather drive themselves. As trips got longer, people preferred flying, but self-driving cars were still a competing choice. On the longest trips, with a 45-hour drive, only about 10% of the people preferred driving themselves but that changed to one sixth when they had a driverless car.

So, in the future, driverless cars will be popular with people, while the future of aviation (航空) is in danger.

11. How does the writer lead into the topic of the passage?
A.By making a plan.B.By giving an example.C.By offering an opinion.
12. Why would people choose driverless cars over planes?
A.Because driverless cars could save more time.
B.Because driverless cars could save more money.
C.Because driverless cars could make people more comfortable.
13. In the study, people would change their travel habits depending on _______.
A.how many people would go with them
B.whether they will travel on the way
C.the length of the trip
14. What can we learn from the study?
A.Most people would rather drive themselves for short trips.
B.For a trip that requires a 45-hour drive, few people prefer flying.
C.The longer the trip is, the more likely people choose driverless cars.
15. How does the writer feel about the future of aviation?
A.Worried.B.Excited.C.Disappointed.
