Do you want to help others in your free time? Then join us to be a volunteer. On October 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Clapton Middle School will hold a music festival in the gym（体育馆）. The event will include（包括）professional（专业的）musicians and singers.

Interested students should speak with Ms. Braxton, the music teacher. Students who would like to help at the festival must get permission（准许）from your parents.

Moms do lots of housework and you’d like to help her out. Here is some advice for you.

Caring for your own space. Try to keep your room clean. If you make a mess, clean it up.

Sharing some of your mom’s tasks. Find out what tasks you could do. It depends on your age. Children can begin to take care of their own washing from around the age of eight.

Helping out with making dinner. You can try to make a simple lunch.

Organizing a “Mom’s Day Off”. Choose a day to do all chores with your dad and your sister or brother. Let your mom enjoy a relaxing day.

Being active. Ask your mom what you can help with. She probably has advice on things you can do for her. If she asks for your help, don’t refuse. She wouldn’t ask if she didn’t need your help. Don’t wait until she asks you to do something. Always help your mom, and she’ll be happy.

Last Friday, I agreed to meet some friends at 6:00 p.m. in a coffee shop. When I arrived there, I ordered a cup of coffee and sat watching people. There were some boys playing football on the street, and a small boy was running after the ball as it rolled（滚）across the road.

Suddenly, there came a car. It was going very fast. When the driver saw the boy in his way, he braked immediately. But it was too late. The small boy was lying on the street without moving. To everyone’s surprise, the car didn’t stop. It drove away quickly.

People ran to the boy. There was a cut on the boy’s head and he lost a lot of blood. The coffee shop owner（主人）telephoned the police. Soon an ambulance（救护车）arrived and took the boy to the hospital. At 6:30 p.m, the police arrived and started questioning people. About half an hour later, they asked me to go to the police station because I saw everything. I gave them all the information I knew because I really wanted them to catch the driver. I didn’t leave the police station until 8:00 p.m. After that I went home because I didn’t feel like talking to anyone.

The next day, the boy’s parents called me to say thanks. They also told me their boy was fine and the driver was in the police station now.

Waste is very serious in the school. Some students ask for more food than they can eat and others often forget to turn off the lights when they leave the classroom. They say they have enough money to buy these things. But I don’t agree with them.

Waste can bring a lot of problems. Although China is rich in some resources（资源）, we are short of others, for example, fresh water. It is reported that we will have no coal（煤）or oil to use in 100 years. So if we go on wasting our resources, what can we use in the future and where can we move? Think about it. I think we should say no to the students who waste things every day. Everybody should stop wasting as soon as possible.

In our everyday life, we can do many things to stop waste from happening, for example, turn off the water taps（水龙头）when we finish washing, turn off the lights when we leave the classroom, try not to order more food than we need, and so on. Little by little, everything will be better. We stop the waste one day if we do our best!

Do you know the two lovely mascots（吉祥物）? On September 17 of 2019, these two new mascots first showed on TV. Now, let’s see who they are.

Look at the panda! It looks like an astronaut. It wears an ice shell （冰壳）and looks fat, so we call it “Bing Dwen Dwen”. White is the color of ice and snow. “Bing Dwen Dwen” likes ice sports very much and is good at them. That’s why it is the mascot of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games（冬奥会）.

Do you think the red mascot looks like a lantern（灯笼）? The lantern’s name is “Shuey Rhon Rhon”. When the Chinese New Year comes, people always make or buy red lanterns. Red is the color of hope and good luck, so people think their dreams will come true in the new year. “Shuey Rhon Rhon” can give players hope and help them do well in the 2022 Beijing Winter Paralympic Games（残奥会）.
