Although similar in appearance to hyenas (土狼), African wild dogs are nevertheless true wild canine (犬). They are a mixture of black, yellow, and white in such various patterns that no two individuals look exactly alike. African wild dogs are widely distributed across the African plains but they do not live in jungle areas.
They are social animals, living in groups of usually from 2 to 45 individuals. A hierarchy (等级制度) exists within the group, but the animals are friendly to one another. The young and the weak are given special privileges (特权) within the group.
African wild dogs use their sense of sight, not smell, to find their prey (猎物). They can run up to 55 km/h for several kilometers. In eastern Africa, they mostly hunt Thomson’s gazelles, but they will also attack calves, warthogs, zebras, impalas, and the young of large antelopes such as the gnu.
Growing human populations have decreased or damaged the African wild dog’s habitat and also reduced their available prey. Road kill and human persecution (迫害) have also had a negative impact on African wild dog populations. This species is also susceptible to a variety of diseases such as distemper, which is controlled in domestic dogs. Protection of the African wild dog’s natural habitat must be given great concern, as these dogs suffer in habitats changed much by human intrusion (入侵).

Divided into two groups, the students were busy in a kitchen at the High Point Community Center in Seattle US. Instructor (指导员) Asia Faircloth taught one group how to cook vermicelli (意式细面) bowls with chicken. The other group joined instructor Jacob Alhadeff to practice new chopping skills with chef knives.
The center’s four-week cooking course was centered on cooking and food justice. To teach more people about the importance of having nutritious food, the city recruited (招募) students from low-income families through social media. Each student received 100 dollars (700 yuan) at the end of the course.
“Low-income people of color are more likely to feel the effects of food injustice (不公),” Alhadeff said. “So providing cooking ininstruction and putting money back in the pockets of our community members seemed like a no-brainer (容易做的决定):”
Alhadeff and Faircloth started the course not only to teach kids how to cook, but also to encourage them to think more deeply about the economics behind food. They were shown how to connect the dots between persona choices and the economic cost of obesity (肥胖), climate change and global food supplies.
Tahir Adams and Najah Goodrich, two juniors at Seattle Lutheran High School, joined the classes. They talked about how farmers have a hard time putting food on their own kitchen tables while growing fresh produce for the rest of he country. They were proud of the new skills and recipes (菜谱) they learned.
“We started with more personal things, then looked at the bigger, global view... like, how climate change is related to food,” Adams said. “It can be really bad when droughts (干草) turn places into actual deserts and droughts cause civil unrest.”
