Penguin helps the Blooms, too. In the _________, she flies into the bedroom and the boys get up. _________ she sits together with Mom in the afternoon, Mom doesn’t feel sad any more. At three o’clock, Penguin goes to the garden and waits _________ there. When the boys come home from school, they can have fun _________ with each other in the garden. With Penguin, the Blooms are happy again.

One day, Penguin _________. The Blooms love Penguin very much, but __________ are not sad because she can stay with other birds. She will also have a happy family.

Meg needs to buy some food for her dog Fido. She is using a map to find a pet store. A map is a drawing of a place. It has symbols（标志）. They are small pictures on a map. The map has a key, too. The key tells you what the symbols mean. This map shows Meg where she can get food for Fido.

When they stopped the car at the Fair Grounds（集市场地）, they could hear music and see the Ferris wheel（摩天轮）.

“Can I have some money, Dad?” asked Fern.

“Can I, too?” asked Avery.

“I’m going to win a doll by throwing the balls,” said Fern.

“I’m going to have some ice cream,” said Avery.

“You children be quiet. We’re getting ready for work,” said Mrs Arable.

“Let’s let the children go off by themselves（他们自己）,” said Mr Arable. “The Fair only comes once a year.” Mr Arable gave Fern and Avery some money and said, “don’t use it all the first few minutes. And don’t eat a lot of food that’s going to make you sick to your stomachs.”

“And if you go in those swings,” said Mrs Arable, “Hold onto them! Hear me?”

“Look out for pickpockets（扒手）!” said their father.

The children danced away hand in hand to the merry go-round（旋转木马）, to the wonderful music, to the wonderful excitement and the wonderful places. There would be no parents to protect them, and they could be happy and free. Mrs Arable stood quietly and watched them go.

“Do you really think it’s all right?” she asked.

“Well, they have to grow up,” said Mr Arable. “And a fair is a good place to start, I guess.”
