Everybody likes to feel special. Sadly, many of us grow up believing that we’re not special at all. We wish that we could be more attractive or better at sports. We wish we had more money or more beautiful clothes. Like the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, or the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz, we think we’re not good enough just as we are. In the film, the Tin Man wishes he had a heart. The Scarecrow wishes that he had a brain, and the Lion wants courage. At last, each of them realizes that he already has what he wants.
Nearly all parents want us to be the best we can be. They often try to encourage us to do better by comparing us to others. They mean well, but the message we usually get is that we’re not good enough. We start to believe that the only way we can be special is by being better than somebody else, but we are frequently disappointed(失望). There will always be somebody out there that is better than we are at something. There are a lot of people around who may not be as intelligent as we are but who are better at sports. Or they may not be as handsome, but they have more money. It is unthinkable for us to be better than everybody else all the time. Like the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion, we all need what we believe will make us better people.
What we don’t understand is that often we already have inside us the very things that we look for in life. Our parents often forget to tell us that we are special, that we are good enough just as we are. Perhaps no one told them when they were growing up, or maybe they just forgot. Either way, it’s up to us to remind them sometimes that each of us, in our own way, is special. What we are is enough!
22. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the text?A.To describe how smart we are. |
B.To talk about your family problems. |
C.To explain the importance of being yourself. |
D.To suggest how people can change their way of life. |
A.A teenager. | B.A youth worker. | C.A teacher. | D.A parent. |
A.They never compare us to other children. | B.They always tell us that we are good enough. |
C.They often forget to tell us that we are special. | D.They are often told to encourage their children. |
A.What Makes You Smart | B.What Makes You Happy |
C.What Makes You Strong | D.What Makes You Special |
Do you run away when you hear a bee buzzing? Many people do. A bee sting hurts and make some people get allergic(过敏). But did you know that bees are very important to humans? Honeybees do more than just make honey. They fly around and pollinate(授粉) flowers, plants, and trees. Our fruits, nuts, and vegetables depend on these pollinators. One third of our food needs to be pollinated by the honeybee.
Have you seen or heard a honeybee lately? Bees are mysteriously disappearing(消失) in many parts of the world. Most people don’t know about this problem. It is called “colony collapse disorder” (CCD). Some North American beekeepers lost 80% of their hives(蜂巢) from 2006~2008. Bees in Italy and Australia are disappearing too.
The disappearance of the honeybee is a serious problem. Can you imagine never eating another blueberry? Without honeybees food prices will rise quickly. The poorest people always suffer the worst when there is a lack of food.
This problem affects other foods besides fresh produce. Imagine losing your favourite ice cream! Haagen Daaz is a famous ice cream company. Many of their ice creams depend on the hard-working honeybee. In 2008, Haagen Daaz began raising money for CCD. They also funded a garden at the University of California called The Haven. This garden asks people to help the honeybee and teaches visitors how to plant for pollinators.
Donating money to research is the most important thing humans can do to save the honeybee. Scientists need money to study the causes of Colony Collapse Disorder. Some scientists blame CCD on weather change. Others think pesticides(杀虫剂) are killing the bees. Beekeepers transport their hives from place to place in order to pollinate plants year round.
Not everyone has money to donate regularly. There are other ways to help the honeybee. Spread the word by telling your friends and family about the problem. Tell your teacher about the disappearing bees too. Maybe your class can write a letter to the government.
26. Why are honeybees so important?A.They produce one third of human’s food. | B.They help plants get pollinated and grow. |
C.The honey they made are rare and valuable. | D.Their bee stings hurt and make people sick. |
A.To show how scientists will study honeybee. |
B.To explain how serious the CCD problem is. |
C.To tell readers why Haagen Daaz is a famous company. |
D.To describe what beekeepers will lost without honeybee. |
A.donated money for | B.saved money for | C.provided money for | D.collected money for |

Yesterday, on Friday, January 13th, there was a terrible snowstorm and the wind was blowing. As a result, the power was cut in the village. At 5:30 Nancy Gordon, the maid (女仆), entered the sitting room and found Mrs Janet Smith lying in a pool of blood next to the sofa. She immediately took her mobile phone and called the police. Inspector (巡官) Japp and two detectives arrived ten minutes later and started looking for clues. They discovered a broken cup of tea under the coffee-table, a carving-knife covered in blood behind the TV set, and a small piece of paper in Mrs Smith’s hand where the words “can’t leave her” could only be read.
The three policemen narrowed(缩小) down the suspects to four people: Paul Smith, the victim’s husband, their daughter Jenny, their maid Nancy Gordon and their gardener Steven Baker. Inspector Japp questioned them by turns in the study.
Jenny, who is an accountant in a big firm, claimed she was in her bedroom finishing a report for the following week. She had to light some candles because it was already dark and she couldn’t see what she was doing. She added she hadn’t heard anything.
Paul Smith said he was in the library watching a football match on TV. He didn’t want to miss it because his favourite team was playing. He didn’t hear anything because he had turned up the volume(音量).
Nancy Gordon explained she had prepared a cup of tea for Mrs Smith at 5:00 and had brought it to the sitting room where Mrs Smith was reading a letter. Then she had gone back to the kitchen because she had to do the washing up since the dishwasher didn’t work and she wanted to leave everything in order before the weekend. When she went back to the sitting room to get the tea cup. she discovered Mrs Smith’s body but she didn’t touch anything.
Steven Baker told the police he was working in the greenhouse: because of the awful weather, he couldn’t do anything else. He didn’t see anything because of all the snow that was falling. Besides, he didn’t spend much time in the house.
Inspector Japp, after hearing the four suspects, arrested Paul Smith.

If you are going to study abroad, which country would you like to go to? Chinese students are searching for the best country.
A growing number of Chinese students are studying in Asian universities, especially during the recent years, China Daily reported. Take Singapore for example. The 2021 Report on Chinese Students Overseas Studies showed that the percent of Chinese students interested in studying in the country has risen from 9% to 12% in the past three years. Other Asian countries like Thailand, South Korea and Malaysia are also winning Chinese students’ hearts.
The growth of quality education in the area is the main reason for the change. According to the latest QS World University Rankings 2022, more than 10 universities in Asian countries (except China) are listed in the top 100. The two leading universities are the National University of Singapore(NUS) in 11th place and Nanyang Technological University, also in Singapore, in 12th place.
Zhang Mila, 28, graduated from NUS in 2018. She chose the university for its high standard of education. She joined the volleyball team at NUS, took part in competitions and made good friends through rich social activities. “The diversified(多元化的) courses might not help me in my future career, but it opened my eyes and knowledge,” Zhang told China Daily.
The lower cost, geographical advantages and similar cultures in Asian countries are other reasons attracting Chinese students. For example, if you study in South Korea, the cost is about $16,000 per year(about 114,000 yuan), compared with the $50,000 it costs to study in the UK for a year and $100,000 in the US.
Chinese students have taken studying abroad as a choice for higher education. Now, the study destinations(目的地) are also becoming more diversified, said Pan Jie, chief officer at Liyuan Education, an overseas education consulting company in Shenzhen, Guangdong.
60. What was the percent of Chinese students interested in studying in Singapore three years ago?61. Why have Chinese students chosen to study in Asian countries recently?
62. If you have a chance to study abroad, where would you like to go, the West or the East? Why?
