Two years ago, I went to study in Italy. Before leaving, I asked my mother what gifts I should take to the teachers and the students there. Mom told me to give them some Chinese fans. She said that China is the home of fans. And fans have a long history. People first used them in the Shang Dynasty. I thought it was a good idea. The fan is more than a tool for cooling. It’s also an important part of Chinese traditional culture.
I went shopping and bought three kinds of Chinese fans. The first kind was the feather (羽毛) fan for the teachers. It was made of bird feathers. It was the symbol of Zhuge Liang, a very smart man in ancient China. The fans I bought for the girls were silk fans. They were also called “round silk fans”. Fans of this kind were made of silk with paintings of beautiful women, birds or flowers. They were very popular with women of all ages. As for the boys, I picked the folding (可折叠的) paper fans. Folding paper fans first became popular during the Song Dynasty. There were usually beautiful pictures on the fans. Some were mountains and rivers, and some were flowers and animals. Many people even wrote poems and drew pictures on fans, such as Su Dongpo in the Song Dynasty and Tang Bohu in the Ming Dynasty.
At the welcome party in Italy, my new teachers and classmates were all excited to get the wonderful gifts. And they got interested after learning about the stories and culture behind them.

Fast walking is a kind of exercise between walking and race walking. A study shows that fast walking has become the most popular sport in China. About 55% of Chinese people walk at least 5,000 steps a day. About 37% of the people regard fast walking as their favorite sport. About 23% choose running and 14% choose bike-riding. These results are from WeChat users.
Fast walking and running are easy. They cost little and work well, so they are popular. And many people would rather do sports outdoors than go to gyms. For most people, it’s better to walk fast for at least 10 minutes at one time and walk about 6,000 steps every day.
The study also shows that people in Guiyang love sports most. On average (平均), one person in the city walks 5,981 steps each day. It seems that people in places with better environment and air are more willing to do sports.
