I had walked along the sea for about an hour until I began to feel hungry. It was seven. At that time I was not far from a favourite restaurant of mine, where I often went to eat two or three times a week. I knew the owner well.

I went into the restaurant, which was already crowded, and ordered my meal. While I was waiting, I looked _________ to see if I knew anyone in the restaurant. Then I saw a man sitting at a corner table near the door keeping looking in my direction, as if he knew me. I certainly didn’t know him, for I never forgot a _________. The man had a newspaper open in front of him. But I could see that he was keeping an _________ on me. When the waiter brought my soup, the man was _________ puzzled (迷惑) by the familiar (熟悉) way that the waiter and I called each other. He became even puzzled as time went on. When I had finished, I called the owner of the restaurant and asked him _________ the man had wanted. The owner told me he was a detective. “Really?” I was surprised. “He was certainly _________ in me. Bob was only seven years old. One night Bob was at home alone while his parents were out for a party. He had often stayed alone before, so he wasn’t afraid. As he waited for his parents to return home, he watched a film on TV. His eyes became heavier and heavier as time passed by.

Suddenly Bob’s eyes opened wide—what was the sound in the next room? Bob heard the window being opened slowly. For a minute, Bob was so frightened that he could not move, and his body felt like ice. He knew that he couldn’t lose his head（惊慌失措）and began to think of the things he could do. Again he heard the sound of someone trying to climb into his home through the window.

Bob’s drums were standing in the corner near the TV. “Wait, maybe there is something I can do,” thought Bob. He beat on his drums as hard as he could. The sound was so terrible that Bob surprised even himself. He also surprised the man in the window, who ran away as fast as possible. How clever he was!

Not everyone has a chance to be a detective（侦探）. But I got one when I was 13 years old. It happened in 1994.

One afternoon, I was walking down the street when I saw my father’s new car. I expected（期望） to see my father in the driver’s seat. But to my surprise, I saw a young woman driving instead. “She has stolen my father’s car,” I thought. So I quickly stopped a taxi and got in. I said to the driver, “Follow that new car in front.” And I told him why.

The taxi driver had a car phone, so I asked him to call the police. Soon we heard the sound of a police car. The police told the woman to stop the car using a loudspeaker. So the car stopped. The taxi came to a stop, too. I got out right and said to the woman, “This is not your car. It’s my father’s car.”

The woman smiled and said, “Oh. You’re Mr. Johnson’s younger son, right? I’ve seen your photo in your father’s office.”

Before I could say one word, the woman explained that she was my father’s new assistant（助手）. My father had asked her to take his computer to the shop to have it repaired. He lent her his car. After hearing this, I called my father and he told us what the woman said was right. The police and the taxi driver laughed. I felt very sorry. It was both the first time and the last time I worked as a detective. Don’t you think my story funny?
