In China most people eat three meals (餐) a day, but in many English homes people eat four meals a day. They have breakfast at any time from seven to nine in the morning. They eat porridge, eggs or bread and drink tea or coffee for breakfast. Lunch comes at one o’clock. Afternoon tea is from four to five in the afternoon and dinner is at about half past seven p.m. First they have soup, then they have meat or fish with vegetables. After that they eat some other things, like bananas, apples or oranges. But not all English people eat like that. Some have their dinner in the middle of the day. Their meals are breakfast, dinner, tea and supper and all these meals are very simple.

A man has two children, a boy and a girl. The boy is good-looking, but the girl is not. Today they find a mirror (镜子) and for the first time they see what they look like. The boy is very happy and says to his sister, “How cool I am! I look much nicer than you!” The girl doesn’t like what her brother says. “Go away!” she says.

Their father sees what happens. He walks to them and says to the boy, “You look nice, and what you do should be nice too.” Then to the girl, he says, “My dear, if you help everyone, everyone will love you. It will not matter (与……无关) that you are not as good-looking as your brother. It is better to be good than to be good-looking.”

I have four good friends. They are Bob, Helen, Dale and Cindy. Bob is very tall. He is of medium build. He has short curly hair. He likes playing soccer and he is the captain (队长) of our school soccer team. He is very popular. Helen is thin and she is of medium height. She is very beautiful. She has two big eyes and long black hair. She likes music, and she often sings and dances. She can sing well. Dale is a good student. He is of medium height and build. He studies hard and he is good at his schoolwork. He likes reading and playing chess. Cindy is a little bit short. She often wears a red skirt and white shoes. She likes to tell jokes (笑话). She never stops talking. I like my good friends. We often help each other.

Ken loved watching TV. His parents thought he spent too much time on TV. One day, Ken’s mother read a newspaper.     16     The boy never watched TV.

Then she showed it to Ken, and said if Ken didn’t watch TV for one year, she would give him $600.     17     He turned off (关掉) the TV right away, and said, “OK. I just want the money.”
