Can you imagine (想象) your life with no mobile phones or TVs? With no cars or supermarkets?Can you imagine life in a tree house?

In her book, A Life in the Trees, journalist (记者) ReBecca Moore travels 15,000 km from London to Papua New Guinea. In Papua New Guinea, Rebecca meets the Kombai people. She talks about their lives in the forest.

Moore lives with the Kombai women and children for three months. Kombai life is very different. The Kombai people have no watches and no cars. There is no ______ for the children.

Parents teach their children to cook, hunt (狩猎) and swim. The Kombai get up very early every morning. Kombai men hunt in the forest. They can hunt for 12 hours. They also cut down sago palms (棕榈树). This tree is important. The women cook the inside of the tree. The Korubai people eat this food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The most important part of Kombai life is building their tree houses. The men, women and children all help build tree houses.

Each house is 20 m high. The stories in this book show the Kombai people’s lives in the trees.

Kwan is happy. The newspaper is having a writing contest (比赛). The winner’s story will be in the newspaper! “It says to write about someone who you think is a hero,” Kwan says. “I will write about my favourite football player Messi. He’s is my hero.”

Kwan’s sister, Cho, asks, “Can I join the contest?”

“No. You’re too little,” Kwan says, “You can’t win.” He picks up his ball and goes out.

Cho knows what to do. First, she picks up the newspaper. Next, she reads the contest rules (规则). Then she begins to write. “I believe that I can win,” she says to herself.

When Cho finishes, she finds her mother. She tells her mother about the contest. “Who do you write about? A singer or a doctor?” asks Mother.

“Rosa Parks,” says Cho. “She was a fighter (斗士) for black people. She believed everyone was equal. She wanted all people to be treated the same, whatever (无论什么) colour of skin they are born with.”

Kwan runs outside to get the newspaper.

“The contest winner’s story will be in today’s paper!” he cries.

Two minutes later, Kwan comes back inside. “I guess I need to eat my words, Cho.You are not too young. You win the contest!”

“Your story teaches me a lot,” Kwan says. “Rosa Parks was a true hero.”
