Many people have said that you can experience all four seasons in a single day in Britain. I finally got it recently.

It was a Saturday morning and raining lightly. Mum and I were going to the cinema. But the rain didn’t put us off; we’d had far worse than that!

After the film was over, we could see from the cinema window that the rain was pouring down. But when we reached the exit, the weather was completely normal. There was no rain, just wind and bright sunshine. It was amazing.

Since the weather was looking good, we decided to go to the Botanic Garden in the afternoon. However, on the way there, there was another shower—snow. I was excited about the snow; Mum was busy trying to get me into my raincoat. Then, dramatically (戏剧性地), the snow stopped. We were startled. And guess what? The same thing happened four more times that afternoon.

The next day, on Sunday, when I pulled back the curtains, the world was covered in a blanket of snow. I quickly got dressed and ran out of the house. A few minutes later, I’d made a big snowman in the back garden. The snow was already up to my heels and I didn’t think it would stop the whole day.

But a little later it did stop. That was at 11 in the morning. By 4 p.m. all the snow had disappeared. The Sun had come out again, shining brightly as “normal”!

A long time ago, there was an apple tree. A little boy loved to play around the tree.

Time went by. The boy ________ up. One day, he came back to the tree and said, “I want to play with toys, but I need money to buy them.” “You can pick my apples and ________ them,” the tree said. Then the boy took all the apples, but he disappeared for a long time.

One day, the boy returned and the tree was very excited. “Come and play with me,” the tree said. “I don’t have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a ________,” the boy replied. “You can cut my branches to build it,” said the tree. So the boy cut all the branches off and left ________. A rich man was once riding along the road and saw an old man digging in his garden. On the ground lay a young tree, ready to be planted. The rich man called out to the old man, “What kind of tree are you planting there, my good man?”

“This is a fig tree, sir.” He said.

“A fig tree?” the rich man was very surprised. “Why, how old are you, may I ask?”

“I am ninety years old.”

“What!” cried the rich man. “You’re ninety years old. You are planting a very young tree now and it’ll take years to give fruit. You certainly don’t hope to live long enough to get any fruit from this tree.”

The old man looked around the garden. Then he said with a smile, “Tell me, sir. Did you eat figs when you were a boy?”

“Sure,” the man did not know why he asked this question.

“Then tell me this,” he said. “Who planted the fig trees?”

“Why-why? I don’t know.”

“You see, sir.” went on the old man. “Our forefathers(祖先) planted trees for us to enjoy and I am doing the same for the people after me.”

The rich man was quiet and said, “You are right, my good man. We should do some things for the people after us. Thank you very much.” Then he rode away.
