Different colours can affect us in many different ways according to Verity Allen. In a new program “Colour me Healthy”, Verity looks at the ways that colours can influence how hard we work and the choices we make. They can even change our emotions (情感) and even influence how healthy we are.

“Have you ever noticed how people always use the same colours for the same things?” says Verity. “Our toothpaste (牙膏) is always white or blue. It’s never green. Why not? For some reason we think that blue and white is clean, while we think of green products as being a bit unpleasant. It’s the same for businesses. We respect a company which writes its name in blue or black, but we don’t respect one that uses pink or orange. People who design new products can use these ideas to influence what we buy.”

During the program, Verity meets people who work in the colour industry, from people who design food packages, to people who name the colours of lipsticks (唇膏). Some of the people she meets have little scientific knowledge to prove their ideas, such as the American “Colour Doctor” who believes that serious diseases can be treated successfully by the use of coloured lights. However, she also interviews real scientists who are studying the effects of green and red lights on mice, with some surprising results.

Overall, it’s an interesting show, and anyone who watches it will probably find out something new. But because Verity goes out of her way to be polite to everyone she meets on the program, it’s up to you to make your own decisions about how much you should believe.

It’s 3.00 a.m. Angela is ________ to start the day at the family bakery. She has three children, and they all help at the bakery. Vincent and his wife, Angela, are the owners of his family’s bakery. Vincent’s father owned the bakery, and before that Vincent’s grandfather owned the bakery. Now, Vincent and Angela own and ________ the bakery.

Mr Martino is a regular customer. He visits the bakery every morning. He always buys the round loaf of bread with no butter. He says that it’s good. Mrs Salerno is also a regular customer. Every Friday, she buys two loaves of Italian bread and a large box of cookies. Her six-year-old daughter, Laura, always gets one free cookie. Mrs Salerno says that Vincent’s bakery is ________ in the area.

One afternoon David went to buy a pen for himself. On his w    44     to the shop, he saw an old woman drop a small bag to the ground. Before he told her about it, a worker had picked it up and put it into his pocket. Soon the woman r    45     that her bag had lost and went to ask the worker, but the man didn’t admit he had seen it. Looking at the tall and strong man, David was too afraid to say anything and had to leave w    46     telling the old woman the truth. That evening David felt sorry that he hadn’t spoken up. He thought it over and at last he f    47     a way. The next morning, David went to Mike’s home and told him about it. The boy agreed to help him teach the worker a lesson.

The man was cleaning a sewer (下水道) while the two boys were passing a shop.

“My mother dropped her g    48     watch into this sewer yesterday,” David said to Mike. When he heard this, the worker’s eyes lit up (发光), “Well, boys,” he said. “It’s d    49     here. Go and play on the playground.”

“Yes,” answered David, “but my father has got it out!”
