People do different things on the weekend. Let’s see what these four students did last weekend and how they felt.

David: It was not bad. I went out with my friends. We went to the movies and saw an interesting movie. Then we went to a new restaurant and ate a big meal. The food was good. We talked about our favorite sports happily.

Jill: ▲ It was raining and cold, so I didn’t go out. On Sunday morning I just stayed at home and watched TV. And in the afternoon I did my homework and read some books.

Mark: It was great. My friend and I went dancing. I had a lot of fun. I made some new friends. They were very friendly.

Anna: I thought my weekend was terrible. It was my good friend Leo’s birthday last Saturday. I forgot it, so I didn’t buy him a present. He called me and invited me to his home. When I got there I found there was a birthday party. All of his friends gave him presents except me. Leo said it was OK, but I felt really bad.

About 500 years ago in China, there was a traveler (旅行者). He spent 30 years traveling across China. His name is Xu Xiake.

    26     When he was a child, Xu enjoyed reading books about Chinese mountains and rivers. These mountains and rivers were very beautiful. He made a wish then.     27    

At that time, many children studied hard to become officials (官员). Xu’s father never made him take exams (考试).     28     Xu began to travel when he was about 22 years old. Before he left, his mother made him a hat for the traveling.

Xu traveled to 21 provinces and over 100 cities in China. He climbed thousands of mountains and discovered (发现) over 350 caves (洞穴).     29     And he discovered the Yangtze River’s headwaters (上游源头).

Xu traveled mostly on foot. He slept and ate in the wild (野外).     30     But Xu was brave (勇敢的) and he always enjoyed traveling. He kept a diary while traveling and the book The Travels of Xu Xiake is still popular today!
