Construction Workers Every November, near the start of summer in Antarctica (南极洲), chinstrap penguins begin an activity you see in a lot of cities. Rock Stars Known as Fiordland penguins, these birds don’t live in Antarctica but the rain forests of New Zealand. They are also known for their funny looks and sounds of singing that can be easily noticed. The birds can shake their crests (冠) —like rock stars shake their hair on the stage—to show off their plumage (羽毛) to interest mates. About four years ago, I moved to Chicago and started feeling really worried during the first year of high school. I couldn’t find out why, but it got worse over time. Even though I was usually a happy and healthy girl, the first year was really hard to go through. I tried my best to balance (平衡) friends, schoolwork, family, and after-school activities. At home, I would often cry for no reason and have trouble falling asleep.
After months, I finally asked for help. My dad took me to a doctor. I spent a long time talking with my doctor Sally about the feeling of “no hope of life”. When I felt pain, I felt as if it’s my problem. I kept telling myself that I was a loser. Sally suggested a program called “Insight” to help with my depression (抑郁症). I was embarrassed (尴尬的) to tell others that I was in a mental (心理的) health program. But I just wanted to feel happy all over again, so I decided to try it. Later, I learned that those terrible feelings were not my problem but something wrong with my brain (大脑).
Now, things are much better. My friends and family help me, and I know what to do to stay happy. Every day, I see stories on the news about kids like me. I share my story to let them know they’re not alone.

★ It should be more about making your community better, and learning what it means to be a good person in our world. You should think about helping others, not about how you’ll benefit (受益).
The best way to fix this is to change what colleges and jobs ask for. Instead of asking “how many hours have you helped”, they should ask “how have you made things better for others”. They should ask people to explain, and look for people who really care and try hard, instead of just counting (计算) the hours they’ve spent.
We, the students, can also help fix this. Try to forget about the hours, because they’re not important. Choose groups you care about and learn about the people you’re helping. Don’t help because you have to, but because it’s the right thing to do as a person. Next time you hear a friend talking about how many hours they’ve helped, tell them that numbers don’t change the world.
