When Chinese people hear the number 25,000, they will think of the Red Army’s Long March. The march was 25,000 li. Why did the Red Army walk so far?

In 1934, the Red Army lost after Kuomintang’s fifth attack (进攻). They decided to move to a safer place. There, they could keep fighting against Kuomintang and the Japanese invaders (侵略者). In October, 1934, the Red Army started the march in southern China. There were four groups in the army. Each group started at a different time and took a different way. In October, 1936, the Long March came to the end. All four groups walked over 65,000 li in all.

Along the way, the Red Army soldiers (战士) went through many difficulties. They had to fight and live in a different environment. In Sichuan, they had to cross Luding Bridge in the middle of gunfire. They also climbed over the snow mountain. They didn’t have enough food or clothing. Many soldiers died of cold and hunger. In the Central Red Army, about 86,000 soldiers took part in the march. Only about 7,000 made it to the end.

During the march, the Red Army soldiers won many battles. In 1935, the Red Army went across Chishui River four times. This helped 30,000 Red Army soldiers beat 400,000 Kuomintang soldiers.
