Doctors recommend that kids should do outdoor activities and play with their parents. However, that doesn’t mean TV has to be taken out of their family life. There are some educational TV programs that help your children learn. Take a look at these four TV programs that your kids should watch.
| As one of the longest children’s shows on TV, Sesame Street is still a favourite with parents. It teaches kids about sharing, being a good friend, and other important values. In addition, words and letters are introduced through scenes and songs with favourite characters like Elmo, Big Bird, Zoe, and Cookie Monster. You will probably enjoy watching this show as a kid, and your children will too. Sesame Street has been aired (播放) on PBS since 1969. |
| What kid doesn’t like a superhero? Well, Super Why! has four of them: Alpha Pig with Alphabet Power, Princess Presto with Spelling Power, Wonder Red with Word Power, and Super Why with the Power to Read. This TV show teaches kids how to put letters together to make words and how to pronounce (发音) words when reading. It’s great for kids from the preschool (学前) to second grade. Super Why! has been aired on PBS and PBS Kids Sprout since 2008. |
| Based on the railway series books by Reverend Wilbert Awdry. Thomas and Friends follows the story of locomotive (火车头) friends on Sodor Island. There are large engines (发动机) and small engines. It teaches kids to accept others for who they are and always do their best in everything. After all, the popular sentence of the show is “I think I can.” Thomas and Friends has been aired since 1984. |
Based on a classic children’s book series by Marc Brown. Arthur is about an eight-year-old boy named Arthur from Elwood City. He has to deal with several situations that many children face today. For example, the show explores several health-related and social problems, such as cancer and other disabilities. The stories, along with the song “Believe in Yourself”, teach kids how to deal with these problems and accept everyone. Arthur has been aired on PBS since 1996. |

Abigail’s mother had to go to a meeting in the afternoon and asked her to take care of her younger brother, Harry. They planned to play basketball outside, but it started to rain.
Abigail looked at Harry nervously and said, “It’s raining too hard to go outside, so what would you like to do instead? Do you want to color with crayons?”
“No, it’s boring,” Harry said.
Abigail sighed. This was what she had worried about. “Come on, Harry. Please think of something you want to do,” she said to Harry.
Harry’s face lit up as he asked, “Can we play hide-and-seek (捉迷藏)?”
Abigail stopped playing hide-and-seek years ago, but she wanted to do almost anything to keep Harry happy until their mother came home. She covered her eyes with her hands and started counting. When she reached fifty, she called out, “Ready or not? Here I come!”
Abigail started by looking in the family room and then made her way into the kitchen. When she wondered where Harry was hiding, the perfect place came into her head. She climbed to the attic (阁楼). The floor was so dirty that she easily followed Harry’s footprints to his hiding place behind some boxes.
“Now it’s your turn to hide,” Harry shouted happily. As he jumped around, he knocked over (撞到) several boxes. Abigail was going to shout angrily at him for being so careless when she saw beautiful beads (有孔小珠) on the floor.
“Cool beads!” said Harry, starting to pick them up.
“They can be used to make a wonderful necklace (项链) for Mom,” Abigail said excitedly.
When their mother came home, Abigail and Harry gave her the necklace. “What a wonderful necklace!” said their mother. “I forgot all about my grandmother’s beads.Where did you find them?”

Do you sometimes feel lonely? Are you sometimes under great pressure (压力)? Do you sometimes feel sick? If your answers to these questions are “Yes”, you might not need a doctor. Instead, you might just need a pet. Pets, like dogs, cats, or even birds, can make you feel better. In fact, many people feel healthy when they have a pet to take care of.
People who have pet s often feel calmer (更冷静的) and less lonely than people who don’t have pets. For example, Juliet Locke has a six-year-old cat named Snowball. “Snowball knows when I have a bad day. When I’m sitting in a chair, she’ll run to me and I’ll pet her. She really helps me feel relaxed,” says Juliet. “Pets can help you have a healthy mind.”
Pets can give you a healthy body, too. Dr. R.K.Anderson is a veterinarian (兽医). He started CENSHARE (Center to Study Human/Animal Relationships (关系) and Environments),an organization that researches how pets influence (影响) people. These researchers (研究者) believe that people with pet s are healthier than those without pets. For example, pet owners often have a lower risk (风险) of heart disease. Many pet owners don’t have high blood pressure (高血压), either. If you have a dog, you need to take it for a walk. Taking walks is also good for your heart and brain health.
While most people think of dogs and cats as pets, having birds and fish can also be helpful. In fact, people own many different kinds of pets. Researchers studied the influences of these kinds of animals on their owners’ health. The researchers found that some people actually feel more relaxed and have lower blood pressure by watching fish or by listening to the sounds of birds. These activities make people feel calm.
34. Why does the writer write about Juliet Locke?A.To encourage people to feed pets well. |
B.To talk about how to choose a pet. |
C.To show pets can make people feel healthy. |
D.To ask people to talk about their problems with their pets. |
A.Pets can help people have a healthy body. |
B.Pets can keep people away from bad feelings. |
C.Keeping pets can help cure (治愈) some illnesses. |
D.Keeping pets can improve the relationships between humans. |
A.CENSHARE mainly studies how to save pets. |
B.A dog can be more helpful to people than a cat. |
C.A person will probably get relaxed if he keeps a pet. |
D.Watching fish can make some people’s blood pressure rise. |
A.How to deal with bad feelings. |
B.Pets can bring trouble to people. |
C.How to get along well with pets. |
D.Pets can help people keep healthy. |
If the eyes are the windows of the soul, then the body is the mirror of the feelings. If we are feeling great, we may give out our body signals (信号). If we look at someone else’s body, we can often know how they are feeling by their body signals. So I think reading body language signals is a helpful tool in daily communication. It can help us communicate with others more easily if we use it in the right way.
Here are some numbers for you to know how important it is to read and use body language. 7% of the information we receive is from what people say, and 38% of the information we receive is from the tone (语调) and the speed of their voice; while 55% of the information we receive is from their body language.
These non-verbal (非口头的) signals will help you a lot, but you still need to pay attention to what people are saying. If you pay too much attention on their body language signals, you and the people may feel uncomfortable.
It is useful to learn how to send the right signals and avoid the wrong signals, and it is useful to be able to read people’s body language too. Body language may have some interpretations. Many signals have different meanings. It depends on the person, the situation and the culture. For example, in the US, people wave goodbye with the palm (手掌) facing the person they’re waving to. But in other cultures, people may wave goodbye with the palm up to the sky, and the fingers opening and closing. To people in the US, this might look like a gesture asking someone to come closer. So you have to be sure of the meaning when you are trying to read a body language signal…
38. What does the writer think of body language?A.It is simple to learn. |
B.It is hard to understand. |
C.It is difficult to be used. |
D.It is helpful in communication. |
A.names | B.excuses | C.meanings | D.thoughts |

C.Why people wrongly understand body language. |
D.Numbers of people wrongly using body language. |
