I'm writing this letter to tell you something about Miss Li. She lives alone, but she never feels     1    . It's because she often volunteers her free time to clean up the city parks, give out notices, repair or fix     2     bikes or wheels for students.

Miss Li used to be a doctor. She understands the difficulty of the     3     people, so she cares for them very much. When you hear the word “volunteering”, what do you think of it? You may think volunteering is to help others, ______ them money or things. It is true that volunteering can help others, ______ it can also help you. ______ you're sad about something that has happened, doing some volunteering can be a great way to ______ with your bad feeling.

Volunteering also lets you see your own life ______ new ways. Sometimes it's easy to ______ about some things like grades and health and get angry ______ you don't have the newest computer games. Volunteering lets you ______ some time doing other things for a while.

Lots of people find that they really enjoy volunteering. Volunteering ______ often put you in a different environment. ______ example, you might know that just on the other side of your town, some kids really need winter ______．

You may feel good to be able to meet a ______ like that. You'll know that, thanks to you, some kids have ______ coats, hats and shoes. So whether they're winter clothes and food for the hungry, or homes for some ______ pets, doing volunteer work means one very ______ thing: You make a difference to the world.

We don't     38     special skills but all of us can be special people. Why? We can volunteer.

Mary, a Canadian girl, was sad because she had a heart problem. Her classmates had always been trying     39     her up. However, they couldn't because she was so sick that she     40     lots of money to have an operation(手术)．

Her parents hoped to get help from the public. A TV station soon set up a call­in center for Mary. Many people called and offered(主动提出) to help Mary out.

He loved reading but he couldn't read because of his poor eyesight(视力). That made Helen very sad.     44     She was sure that reading to them could bring them fun and pleasure.

She also helped one woman write her stories. Ann was almost 100 years old. Ann told Helen some stories of her life.     45     Then she handed the notebook to Ann. Ann was very excited because she could share her life stories with her children and grandchildren.

After a strong storm hit some southern cities, Helen volunteered again for the American Red Cross.     46     Everyone in the care center said that she was kind and helpful.

Helen hopes to do more volunteer work. She says, “The real value of my volunteer work is becoming friends with the people I help.     47     Volunteer work also makes a difference to their life.”
