You've probably heard of working dogs that help police officers, or horses that help farmers. Did you know that carrier pigeons can be trained to help people too? Here are some examples.
Mailman
Carrier pigeons can be trained to carry messages to people. The note is placed into a small can. The can is tied(绑)to the pigeon's leg. Then the pigeon flies off with the note.
Lifeguard
From high up in the sky, specially trained pigeons can find orange life jackets in the ocean. Sometimes it is difficult for humans to find people lost at sea, especially when the weather is bad. However, pigeons can fly quickly over a large area of water to look for people.
Spy
Many years ago, carrier pigeons were used to help our country during war(战争)—spy pigeons had small cameras that were tied to their feet. As a pigeon flew over enemy(敌人)land, the camera took photos of the land below. This would allow our soldiers to see where the enemies were and what they were doing.
So next time you see a pigeon, stop and watch it closely. What might look like an ordinary bird to most people might actually be helpful.

Most children don't enjoy doing housework. They like playing computer games rather than cleaning the rooms. But in Australia, Jim and Robert's mother, Mrs. Black, has good and proper methods to get their children to do housework.
Here is an example.
"Mom, have you worked out next week's housework? Let Jim and me choose the cards. I can't wait. It's fun!" When Robert shouted out, his mother had already put all the cards on their big table. On the cards, there are some words like these, "sweep the floor, clean your bedroom, help mom cook, wash vegetables, make beds, feed the fish, cut the wood, clean the bathroom" and many others. Jim and Robert chose two cards for each day from Monday to Friday. Then they would hang them on the weekday task board. Jim likes to clean the bathroom, so he picked up the card "clean the bathroom". Robert loves to make the bed so he picked up his favorite card. Jim again picked up "wash vegetables” and Robert chose "feed the fish". Soon the two boys were happy to take away all the cards.
To help the children do housework, their mother thought hard and came up with this idea. Of course, the parents did the housework on the weekends and left Jim and Robert two days free.

Autumn days give us some fantastic and lively colors. Then, suddenly,
the city is covered (覆盖) with a thick sheet of snow. It is during this
special time of year that one of the most popular and enjoyed holidays
in America appears: Christmas. This time is so special that schools
often give students a two-week- break from their schoolwork to enjoy
the winter holidays.
My family takes this chance to spend two weeks together. We build a tree and decorate it with many colorful lights. On top of the tree, we put a glowing star. As night sets in, the dark room is warmly lit up by a bright Christmas tree.
Then, on Christmas Eve (前夕), our family has all the traditional American foods: turkey, sweet potatoes, vegetables, nuts, pies, and other good dishes. On this very night, there is a mysterious (神秘的) story, named Santa Claus, will fly from the North Pole and give presents to the children under the Christmas tree. However, Santa only gives presents to those who have behaved well the whole year. So children across America try to do one last good deed before the night by baking (烘烤) Santa some cookies, trying to ask him for presents. This is why Santa is so fat!
That night, children are often excited, hope to find presents. The next day, they rushed out of bed very early. Then, the whole family opens presents and spends the whole day relaxing.

C.When children see Santa Claus. | D.When children bake some cookies. |
A.The writer puts a glowing star on the top of the tree . |
B.The writer's family also has nuts and pies on Christmas Eve. |
C.Santa Claus gives every child some presents according to the passage. |
D.Santa Claus is from the North Pole according to the passage. |
【知识点】 假日活动
When my family moved to America in 2010 from a small village in Guangdong. China,we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect((尊敬) elders,Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States.
I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive(敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the description“old”. I then walked back to the table and apologized to the wife,After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences,so they laughed and were no longer angry. In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience.
Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience. However,in the United States, people think“ growing old”is a problem since“old”shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young. I had told them something they didn't want to hear. After that,I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don't respect them any more: I still respect them, but now I don't show my feelings through words.

The word “day” has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using “day” to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using “day” to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Since the earth looks like a ball, the sun can shine on only half of it at a time. Always one half of the earth is having day and the other half night. A place is moved from day into night and from night into day over and over by the spinning(旋转)of the earth. At the equator(赤道)day and night are sometimes the same length(长度). They are each twelve hours long. The sun rises at 6 o’clock in the morning and sets at 6 o’clock in the evening. For six months, the North Pole is tilted(倾斜)toward the sun. In those months, the Northern Hemisphere(半球)gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. South of the equator nights are longer than days. For the other six months the North Pole is tilted away from the sun. Then the Southern Hemisphere gets more sunlight. Days are longer than nights. North of the equator nights are longer than days. Winter is the season of long nights. Summer is the season of long days.
51. When the Western Hemisphere is having day, the Eastern Hemisphere is having ________.A.both day and night | B.day |
C.neither day nor night | D.night |
A.the pushing | B.the pulling | C.the spinning | D.the passing |
A.sometimes | B.never | C.usually | D.always |
A.less | B.more | C.all | D.no |

B.the South Pole is tilted away from the sun |
C.the North Pole is tilted toward the sun |
D.the North Pole is tilted away from the sun |
