If you are traveling to the United States, you will need to understand the common way to say hello—a handshake. Friends shake hands. Women, men and even children can shake hands. Shaking hands also seems simple, but there are some important things to remember.
If you give a weak handshake, the other person might think that you’re not kind. He or She might also feel that you don’t like him or her or you don’t want to touch him or her. Shake hands with men and women the same way. But if you shake hands with a very old person or a small child, you should be careful not to hurt them.
The most common handshake should have three shakes and then you should let go. Don’t worry if Americans shake hands a little longer.
It’s special to you. You need to find a comfortable strong handshake that shows what you are like. Because the handshake allows people to touch, the hand should be warm, clean and dry.
Warm: Put your hands into your pockets before you shake hands.
Clean: If you know you’re going to meet someone, wash your hands so they’ll be clean.

The Homeric epic(荷马史诗) Iliad, dated back to the 8th century BC, also mentions that two persons “shook each other’s hands”. Centuries later, Shakespeare wrote in As You Like It that two persons “shook hands”. It might seem like shaking hands is an old custom, the roots(根) of which are lost to the sands of time.
Historians have noticed that shaking hands in the modern time doesn’t appear until the mid-19th century, when it was considered a little improper gesture that should only be used between friends.
The modern handshake as a form of greeting is harder to find. One of the earliest evidences(证据) is a 16th-century German translation of a French book which mentions shaking hands. There’s another evidence for a handshaking tradition at that time: In 1607, the writer James Cleland said that he’d rather shake the two right hands together instead of bowing(弯曲) down to everyone’s shoes and kissing hands.
As the centuries passed, handshaking was replaced(替代) by another greeting way like bowing. According to Roodenburg, handshaking survived in remote areas, where they’d use the gesture to reconcile after a fight. Then, the handshake appeared again as a standard greeting way that remains today.
Not everyone fell in love with the handshake, however. According to an article from December 1884, in France, for example, a society has been recently formed to stop using shake-hands.
Why was shaking hands considered as a good way of greeting? The most popular explanation is that it uses the right hand, making it useless for weapon(武器) holding. In the 19th century, shaking hands without taking gloves away was quite rude and required to say sorry immediately.
Sadly, in a world where unknown translations provide only some evidence, the true reason may remain forever unknown.

The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for elderly people in China. The festival is on the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar (阴历) . As the Chinese word for nine has the same sound as the word for long, people take the Double Ninth Festival to show their wishes of long life for elderly people.
There are many traditions for this festival. On that day, families get together and climb mountains for luck and in the hope that elderly people will live much longer. They also drink chrysanthemum wine (菊花酒) and wear a plant called zhuyu to celebrate it. Both chrysanthemum and zhuyu are regarded as clean plants that can clean houses and cure (治疗) diseases.
Respecting elderly people is shown not only on this special day but also in daily life. For example, when an older person enters a room, everyone stands up. When there are several guests at the table, the host usually introduces them from the oldest to the youngest. When a younger person is presenting something to an older person, two hands are used. On a crowded subway or bus, younger people always offer their seats to elderly people.
In 2012, a new version(版本) of the 24 Filial Exemplars (《二十四孝》) was published. It is to show the new generation how to love and care for their parents in the modern age. Different from the old collection of stories in ancient China about obedient (顺从的) children, the new rules suggest that we should often visit parents and help them use the internet. Some ideas in the list, like telling our parents how much we love them and supporting single parents who want to remarry, are seen as completely new.
To respect elderly people is a traditional virtue(美德) in China. That’s because the Chinese know that elderly people have knowledge and experience that young people can learn from. So, Chinese people are proud of being old. Besides, to respect the elderly people is to respect yourself tomorrow.
