Like most students on international exchange programs, Shavia Westmoreland experienced culture shock (文化冲击) in Beijing, China.
Instead of hiding herself from the outside, Westmoreland overcame (克服) her culture shock by doing an activity she enjoys — volunteering.
“A friend brought me to an orphanage (孤儿院) to help me overcome culture shock,” she said, “He knew that I loved volunteering and language teaching, so he told me the orphanage would be a great place to ‘develop a feeling of home’ in a different culture and improve my language skills.”
Westmoreland enjoyed the visit so much that she started volunteering at the orphanage. She visited once a week to teach English. She also did several “non-purpose” visits on the weekends, just to spend time with the children.
Working with the children, staff and other volunteers taught her more about Chinese culture and gave her chances to practice Chinese. “I had a better understanding of Chinese culture by working with the staff and volunteers. At the end of all conversations, I found that there were more similarities between us than there were differences,” she said.
Volunteering also gave Westmoreland a sense of achievements and the courage (勇气) to hang out around Beijing on her own. “The experience developed my courage to hang out and learn more about Beijing on my own, giving me more chances to practice Chinese outside my class lessons,” Westmoreland said. “The feeling of independence is an achievement for an exchange student, and I believe my volunteering was helpful to my study in China and was also a huge help to my personal growth.”
1. Why did Westmoreland’s friend bring her to an orphanage?2. How often did Westmoreland teach English at the orphanage?
3. How did Westmoreland have a better understanding of Chinese culture?
4. Did volunteering help Westmoreland hang out around Beijing on her own?
5. What do you think of Westmoreland’s volunteering?

6 . In today’s world, cultural exchange (文化交流) has become more important than ever. It helps to build bridges between different cultures. How does cultural exchange happen?
● One of the simplest ways that cultural exchange happens is through food. Eating a country’s traditional dishes can give you a taste of its culture. For example, Sushi is a popular Japanese dish that has become loved around the world. It represents the culinary (烹饪的) culture of Japan and has introduced many people to the sense of using fresh, natural food materials.● Language is another key aspect of cultural exchange. Learning a new language opens doors to a country’s history, literature (文学), and philosophical (哲学的) ideas.
● Art and music are further examples of how culture is shared and developed. International film festivals and music concerts allow artists to show their works to people around the world. This encourages the artists from different places to create and work together.
● Cultural exchange also plays an important role in education. Studying abroad programs and international student exchanges provide students with direct experience of another culture. These experiences can open up a new world to students.
In conclusion, the growth of cultural exchange allows us to appreciate the diversity (多样性) of our world. As we continue to share and learn about each other’s culture, we build a closer and more understanding global community.
Answer each question in no more than 10 words (每题答案不超过10个词)1. Why has cultural exchange become more important than ever?
2. How many ways of cultural exchange are mentioned in the passage?
3. What can people get by eating a country’s traditional dishes?

7 . Sherry Gao is pouring coffee made from Yunnan beans, hoping that her coffee shop in the city of Pasadena, California introduces you to your new favorite coffee and turns your opinions about Chinese coffee beans upside down.
_________ But Gao hopes that throwing light on Yunnan-sourced coffee could expose customers to the coffee-producing region and help to break down prejudice against the beans, which for tens of years were mostly used for instant products.
“We wanted to highlight Chinese coffee because a lot of people never had Chinese coffee before,” Gao said. “Some have the prejudice that it’s bad or cheap, but that’s not the case anymore. It’s been changing so much over the last decade.” Recent producing process, such as the addition of fruit, is leading Yunnan’s coffee to better results. “Every time a new product comes in, it tastes better than the last one,” Gao said.
Farmers in China have grown tea for more than 3,000 years, but coffee has been grown there for only about a century in fewer areas. There was an uptick in the 1980s with government’s efforts. And the turn of the century and the 2010s saw a sharp growth with international companies investing in the coffee planting. But in the last 10 to 15 years, tastes and need for special and high-grade coffees appeared, especially from local growers and shops. The domestic demand for China-grown coffee has risen so rapidly that Gao says it’s now much more expensive.
To further connect with the community, Gao hopes to hold classes for Yunnan coffee introduction. After all, she says, the Yunnan coffee tastes excellent when made in one’s own kitchen with a pour-over system. She hopes it’s only a matter of time before Yunnan coffee becomes popular among the homemade coffee lovers.

In Russia, Chinese cars have already taken up half of the Russian market and their quality is completely comparable to leading brands (品牌) from Korea, Japan and European countries. A recent study showed that more than 53 percent of Russians would like to buy Chinese cars, higher than the rate of 6 percent five years ago. This change suggests a large increase in Russian people’s trust in Chinese cars.
Chinese electric cars are very popular in Russia and data shows that a record 14,000 electric cars were sold in Russia in 2023, with China’s Zeekr (极氪) selling the most, accounting for 26 percent of the total. The Chinese brand Voyah entered the top five in terms of electric car sales in Russia, and the demand for hybrid (混合动力) cars increased. Although sales of electric cars in Russia increased last year, their share of the car market was less than 2 percent. People believe that the Russian electric car market will keep its growth because of government’s support, an increase in brand choices, and increasing charging piles (充电桩).
