1 . Lulu, a Hungarian PhD student at Tsinghua University, first came to Beijing in 2017. She soon fell in love with the city. Her favorite place is the hutong of Beijing. She also found her greatest hobby—Peking Opera.
The first time she saw Peking Opera was at an opera museum. “I found it really amazing,” she said. “The clothes were, of course, beautiful, and the movements (动作) were also beautiful. It is so much different from Western opera.”
Out of interest, she joined the Peking Opera group of Tsinghua University. That made her see that Peking Opera is much more than just the looks. “There is a really huge culture background(背景). And it is the most important in Peking Opera.”
The group members practice twice a week. Mostly, they practice singing and movements. The biggest problem Lulu had was learning the Asian way of singing: “In the beginning, I was using my voice in the wrong way,” she said. But with the help of teachers, she has improved a lot.
There are other international students in the group. “I really love it that Peking Opera brings us together,” she said. “I do believe that art brings deep friendship. I hope I can share this hobby with people outside China.”

3 . Last summer, I joined in a summer program in my university. I travelled to Oxford, England to take a Shakespeare course at Oxford University.
Oxford is a small town with beautiful old buildings. It was such an amazing experience for me to meet a new culture and I often found myself falling into deep thinking about everything new around me.
Even though I was abroad, I wasn’t on vacation. There was a lot of work to do: reading, writing and exams. But studying abroad allowed me to experience a new way of learning. I got to see plays at Shakespeare’s Globe in London and the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford. I love reading Shakespeare, and seeing his works in action was great for my learning because it helped me understand the great works better.
The summer program was, of course, mainly about study. However, there was time for fun. We had classes every morning from Monday to Thursday, so we could be free in the rest of time. Although we had so much studying, some people including me took trips to different countries around Europe because travelling is much cheaper there.
It took me almost a school year to fill out applications and prepare myself for going abroad. I have never travelled internationally before I got this great chance. I also made some new friendships and it will last a lifetime. The experience has been my best part of summer so far!

7 . The word culture includes not only the customs of our society, its art, music, for many, alarming. Many people believe their traditional ways of life are under threat(威胁), the losing of culture is a natural result of globalization(全球化)and progress. So is the globalization of culture a threat or a chance?
Those who see globalization as a threat think that societies are losing special parts of their cultures. For example, Omotik, a language spoken in East Africa, has only 50 live speakers. Some argue that it is hard to find differences between London and Tokyo. Young people’s ideas are often influences by Western or other popular cultures, so they often refuse or even give up the traditions their parents grew up with.
Others focus on the advantages of globalization. They accept that Western culture is spreading, but they also point to how Western countries and many other parts of the world are being shown to world cultures. Young Americans enjoy Japanese comic magazines and watch Korean movies. The teenagers enjoy pop music from Hong Kong. Many argue that there are advantages to these cross-cultural exchanges and that they leads to better understandings between cultures. They say world traditions are celebrated more widely because of these. Chinese New Year, now celebrated in most big cities around the world, is just one of the many festivals that are accepted internationally.
Anyway, many organizations and governments are making efforts(努力)to protect their cultures. One successful example is Wales. There was a time when social pressures were killing off the Welsh language, it is now an active part of Welsh life again. Around the world, similar efforts are going on.
