In today’s world, cultural exchange (文化交流) has become more important than ever. It helps to build bridges between different cultures. How does cultural exchange happen?
● One of the simplest ways that cultural exchange happens is through food. Eating a country’s traditional dishes can give you a taste of its culture. For example, Sushi is a popular Japanese dish that has become loved around the world. It represents the culinary (烹饪的) culture of Japan and has introduced many people to the sense of using fresh, natural food materials.● Language is another key aspect of cultural exchange. Learning a new language opens doors to a country’s history, literature (文学), and philosophical (哲学的) ideas.
● Art and music are further examples of how culture is shared and developed. International film festivals and music concerts allow artists to show their works to people around the world. This encourages the artists from different places to create and work together.
● Cultural exchange also plays an important role in education. Studying abroad programs and international student exchanges provide students with direct experience of another culture. These experiences can open up a new world to students.
In conclusion, the growth of cultural exchange allows us to appreciate the diversity (多样性) of our world. As we continue to share and learn about each other’s culture, we build a closer and more understanding global community.

When Lucy, from the UK, gave a gift to her Chinese friend for the first time, he couldn’t understand it. “He refused to accept it twice, and when he finally accepted it, he didn’t open it. He just took it and put it away. After that, I never heard about it again. He never said he liked it or not.”
In the West, it is polite (有礼貌的;客气的) to open it in front of the giver and say thanks. When you get a gift, the giver hopes that you are excited and really like it. But it is different in China. Usually, people don’t open the gift until the giver leaves. If they open the gift in front of the giver, the giver will think of them as impolite or greedy (贪婪的). For the same reason, the Chinese will refuse a gift twice or three times before accepting it. If you are the giver, give it again until it is accepted after the third time.
Today, more and more young people in China are turning to Western (西方国家的) rules of accepting gifts. That’s OK, but it would be better to follow Chinese. people when it comes to getting gifts from elders.

My favourite great book is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Tom lives with his aunt Polly in the quiet streets of St Petersburg, Missouri. He is a lively and clever young boy, and he finds himself in many exciting adventures(探险). He runs away with his two friends, Huck Finn and Joe, to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River for several days.
My favourite scene in the book is when everyone thinks Tom is dead. He decides to go to his own funeral(葬礼).He hides and watches for a time, and then suddenly he appears. Everyone is surprised to see him but they’re also pleased to see him alive.
Tom is the hero of the story, but there are other important characters. Huck is an outsider and everyone is afraid of him. Becky is pretty with fair hair. Joe is Tom’s best friend, and Injun Joe is the bad man of the story.
The theme of the story is about children’s growing up. It describes how strangers are seen in small towns of America. Finally, it talks about freedom, social rules and how people are punished for bad behavior (行为).
Go to read it! I know you’ll enjoy it.

We can get news from many places — TV channels (频道), radios, newspapers and the Internet. Now let’s look at two kinds of news: TV news and news on the Internet.
Many people like TV news because we can see and hear real people.
Also, TV news has better pictures and sound. Another advantage is that someone has already chosen the most important news. We just sit back and watch. However, TV news may not be updated (更新) as fast as that on the Internet.
As for news on the Internet, one big advantage is that we can see it at any time. The information is updated all the time. We can even share the page with others easily. But on a news website, the sound and videos are sometimes not so vivid (生动的) as what we can see and hear on TV.

With a big box as a stage, a light as a light source (来源) and a piece of white paper as a screen, Hakobyan Aleta made a simple shadow puppet (皮影戏) stage by hand.
The 30-year-old shadow play lover has shown several videos of shadow plays on the Internet and received much attention from people. Aleta came to China from Armenia three years ago to work as an English teacher. She has visited many places. Aleta said she liked the country’s beautiful natural views and different customs. She once watched a shadow play show in a museum in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, and realized this was what she wanted to do.
Arriving home from the museum, Aleta started her research to make a shadow play stage. Learning from videos, she built it with a box, a light, a piece of white paper and other tools. Besides a simple stage, Aleta also tried to make shadow puppets with paper instead of animal skins.
To make her story materials more colorful, Aleta has been learning traditional Chinese culture carefully. Chinese ancient stories, traditional customs and ancient poetry have become her inspiration (灵感). When making scenes about the Qixi Festival, or Chinese Valentine’s Day (情人节), she learned a lot about China’s traditional weddings. To tell the story of the beast Nian (年兽), she tried to set up the characters and building in the story so that the viewers could better understand the story and the Chinese culture behind it.
Aleta’s shadow play videos have won many viewers from Armenia. The video about the beast Nian attracted the attention of an Armenian television station, which was shown earlier this year. Some viewers said her shadow play videos made them understand more Chinese stories and some hoped she could post more. This encourages Aleta to make more videos.
Nowadays, many foreigners fall in love with Chinese culture such as shadow plays. Hakobyan Aleta is one of them. She has showed several videos of shadow plays on the Internet and received much |
The Forbidden City(紫禁城) is over 600 years old now. It is not only important for Chinese people, but also for the whole world. Over the past six centuries, many cultural exchanges have taken place inside it.
Before the 13th century, China had little communication with the outside world. Matteo Ricci, the first westerner to make his way to the imperial court(朝廷) during the Ming Dynasty, made contributions(贡献) to the field of science in China. He also brought new knowledge about map-making. He taught people that the earth was round as a ball with the first European-style world map in Chinese.
Many foreigners followed in Ricci’s footsteps. Lang Shining was one of them. He is a talented painter. He was sent to China in 1715. Later, he was invited to the imperial court to paint for the Qing Dynasty’s Emperor Kangxi. Ever since, a new style that combined(结合) western painting styles with traditional Chinese painting styles has appeared in China.
The first westerners also provided reports for Europe through their letters, notes and books about China. It made the westerners know about the country widely.
Their stories are just a small part of the cross-cultural communication between China and the outside world. But they show a clear truth “The Forbidden City had provided a bridge for communication between China and the rest of the world.” How great it is!
