What Would You Do is a TV program on American ABC. The program which is hosted by the news reporter John Quinones is popular with many people. It tests what people will do when they see someone is in trouble so as to tell us to stand up for the people in need. Here is last week’s program.

In a cake shop, two actors acted as a blind woman named Pamela and a man clerk（职员） who looked down upon the blind. Hidden cameras were recording what would happen. The blind woman came into the shop and bought a box of twelve cupcakes. The clerk treated the woman badly at first. Then he cheated（欺骗） her when he gave her the change. He only gave her 6 dollars instead of 34 dollars.

Would someone be brave enough to stand up for the blind woman? Yes! A customer in the cake shop stopped the clerk from cheating the blind and treating her badly. And other customers joined in soon. John appeared in the end and interviewed the first customer who helped Pamela out. She said it was necessary to give a hand to the people in need. “A psychology（心理学） professor once said,” she said, “it’s difficult to take the first step to stand up. It needs courage.”

Your education, your future

No matter what you want to do with your life, the most important thing is that you should need an education first. You make your own future. You want to be a doctor, a teacher, or a police officer? A good education is required for every single one of those jobs. And what you’re learning in school today will decide whether your country can meet the greatest challenge in the future.

The truth is, being successful is hard. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most failures. For example, the first book of J.K. Rowling, the writer of Harry Potter, was refused 12 times before it was finally published（出版）. Michael Jordan was once kicked off by his high school basketball team. He lost hundreds of games and thousands of shots during his career. But he said, “I have failed over and over again in my life. But that’s why I succeed.”

These people succeeded because they understood that they couldn’t let their failures define（定义）themselves but to teach themselves. So if you get a bad grade, that doesn’t mean you’re stupid. Instead, you need to spend more time studying.

Chinese people were angry. Since March, some Western companies, including H&M and Nike, have come under the spotlight. They said they will stop using cotton from Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.

They said they are follwing industry requirements set by the Better Cotton Initiative（BCI, 良好棉花发展协会） . It is a Switzerland-based cotton organization with 2, 100 members worldwide, including famous brands like Nike, Adidas and Burberry. Recently, the BCI said forced labor might be used in Xinjiang.

This is a complete lie. The so-called “Xinjiang Uygur question” is noting but way for the US to weaken China from the inside, said Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying.

In fact, China is protecting human rights in Xinjiang. The cotton and textile（纺织） industry has created jobs for more than 600,000 local people.

China is the worlds second-largest cotton producer and nearly 90% of Chinese cotton output（产量） is from Xinjiang. However, the increases in China’s cotton production are making some in the US and the West nervous.

The move of the BCI and the brands seriously hurt the feelings of Chinese people. Chinese people called it “earning money from China but defaming（污名化） it on major issues”. So far, Taobao and JD.com have cleared all products and search results related to H&M. Chinese brand ambassadors（品牌大使）like Wang Yibo and Zhang Yixing for H&M, Nike and Adidas have also pulled out of their deals. “It’s time to end the drama from the US side.” Hua noted.

Our school was going to hold an art festival. Every class was actively preparing for it. However, our class didn’t know what to perform at first. After discussion, in the end we decided to sing the song Ode to the Motherland (《歌唱祖国》) to show our love to our country.

We practiced hard together after school. After five times’ practice, some students still couldn’t remember the words. Then one classmate came up with an idea. He divided us into small groups. Then the person who could sing well taught the others.

Slowly, it began to work. We were full of hope for the festival.

The day arrived. We had never took part in such activities before, so we were kind of nervous. Our teacher seemed to read our minds and he gave us some suggestions to make us feel relaxed. But when we stood in front of hundreds of people, we still felt nervous. We all tried to control ourselves because we were afraid of making mistakes.

When we started to sing, the leader looked at us with a smile. This made all of us no longer feel nervous. We succeeded in singing the song. As it was over, we got exciting cheers. Through this activity, I understood the importance of working together and I loved it very much.
